IFL - Las Vegas

2-4-2008, Denver, CO

Event date: Friday, February 29, 2008

Venue: Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada

NEW YORK and LAS VEGAS, February 4, 2008 – Miletich Fighting Academy middleweight standout Ryan McGivern (Bettendorf, Iowa), recognized as one of the most improved, up-and-coming athletes in the International Fight League (OTC.BB: IFLI), will fight for the 185-lb. title against current champion Matt “Suave” Horwich (Portland, Ore.), one of three championship matchups at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Friday, February 29. McGivern replaces Tim Kennedy (Fayetteville, N.C.), an active U.S. Military member who has been called into duty.

Four other bouts have also now been finalized on the eight-bout card, including three featuring Xtreme Couture vs. Mario Sperry’s World Class Fight Center camps. Benji Radach (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) will compete for Xtreme Couture in a middleweight bout against Leopoldo Serao (Brazil), Lew Polley (Coconut Creek, Fla.) will battle Alexandre Ferreira at 205 lbs., and Santino Defranco will take on Rafael Dias in a featherweight contest. The Lion's Den’s Pat Healy (St. Louis) will take on Team Quest’s Jake Ellenberger (Omaha, Neb.) in a matchup that may determine a future title bout at 170 lbs. (Team Xtreme Couture’s Jay Hieron of Las Vegas holds the belt at present).

“While it is disappointing to us and to Tim that he will be unable to compete due to his military obligations, we are excited and fortunate that a fighter of Ryan McGivern’s caliber is available to step in,” said Bas Rutten, IFL Vice President, Fighter Relations. “Ryan has been a great success story and his all-around style should make for an entertaining matchup with Matt Horwich.”

As previously announced, two other IFL titleholders will place their belts on the line as Roy Nelson (Las Vegas), who knocked out Antoine Jaoude (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) to win the heavyweight crown, will take on IFL newcomer Fabiano Scherner (Portland, Ore./Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), who trains with Lindland at Team Quest. Ryan Schultz (North Platte, Neb.), whose lightweight victory over Chris Horodecki (London, Ontario) raised eyebrows in the entire MMA community, makes the first defense of his lightweight belt against John Gunderson (Medford, Ore.), who competes for Ken Shamrock’s Lion’s Den.

Matt Lindland’s Team Quest will take on Lion’s Den in three bouts in the other camp matchup.

K1 announces 2008 event schedule

1-31-2008

Denver, CO

TOKYO, January 31, 2008 -- In a press conference at the Fuji Television Bldg. in Tokyo's seaside district of Odaiba, K-1 organizing body FEG today unveiled the format and provisional schedule for the K-1 World Grand Prix '08.

The K-1 World GP is fightsport's most prestigious event, attracting the world's best fighters and televised in 135 countries. K-1's 16th season will feature major World GP Championship tournaments in four regions: Japan, Asia, the USA and Europe.

Things kick off in Budapest on February 9, with the first stage of the K-1 Europe GP. That tournament will qualify fighters for the Europe GP Final, set for April 26 in Amsterdam. The K-1 Asia GP will be held in June, and the host city will be Taipei or Macao. The K-1 Japan GP returns this year, with fighters from the land of the rising sun squaring off in Fukuoka in June. The last of the GP Champions will be crowned at the K-1 USA GP in Hawaii, to be held in July or August.

The four above-determined Regional GP Champions will advance to the K-1 Final Elimination in Seoul on September 29. There they will be joined by last year's WGP Final Eight, along with four additional fighters selected for exceptional performances in K-1 WGP bouts over the year. In Seoul, the 16 fighters will square off in a one-match format tournament, with the eight victors advancing to the K-1 World GP Final, set for December 6 in Yokohama.

K-1 Event Producer Sadaharu Tanikawa stressed both K-1's local focus and global vision in his remarks at the press conference, highlighting efforts to bring in fighters from new sports, for example rugby; and from new countries, for example Cuban boxers. Commenting on the fact that a homegrown fighter has yet to win the WGP, Sadaharu said improved scouting, tryouts and youth programs will help develop Japanese fighters to the level where they can contend seriously for the Championship.

The K-1 Heavyweight and Super Heavyweight Championship Belts introduced last year, will again be contested; and the popular 70kg weight class K-1 World Max will continue in its present format.

Seven Japanese fighters, led by Musashi and Junichi Sawayashiki, took the stage to pledge to do their best in competition this year; before the press conference concluded with the introduction of a sextet of smiling sweeties, the all-new K-1 WGP '08 Ring Girls.

HDNet Fights Announces First Broadcast Partnership of 2008

1-31-2008

Denver, CO

DALLAS (January 31, 2008) - HDNet Fights announced today that it has partnered with Maximum Fighting Championship to present a LIVE event from Canada on February 22. It will be the first of three events in 2008 between the two partners.

"We're excited to head to Canada to cover this event," said Mark Cuban, president and co-founder of HDNet. "Bringing this live MMA action to our fans in Canada is a great way for us to reward all of our viewers north of the border."

"This partnership with MFC helps to expand HDNet Fights outside the U.S., and to bring new fighters into the fold," said Andrew Simon, CEO of HDNet Fights. "We're looking forward to traveling to Canada to bring our viewers this exciting event."

Mark Pavelich, Owner and President of Maximum Fighting Championship, said the relationship formed between his organization and HDNet was exceptional and a perfect fit.

"Going into 2008, the MFC was determined to find a strong television arrangement to showcase our product," he said. "

"The MFC has long been one of the best live shows anywhere with an energetic and entertaining atmosphere bolstered by the most loyal fans in mixed martial arts. Now with our partnership with HDNet Fights, more fans can realize that experience."

Spratt, known for his vicious knockouts - enters the contest after two consecutive wins. The most recent was a TKO of Tristan Yunker at "HDNet Fights: Reckless Abandon", and prior to that was a KO of TJ Waldburger at "HDNet Fights: Initiation Night"

"I fully expect to rip him a new one," Spratt said. "I want to finish his career before it starts."

The UFC veteran said he's been training hard for this event - and since Ford is new to MMA, he doesn't have an established style so, Spratt doesn't know what to expect. In addition, returning to Canada doesn't bring pleasant memories for Spratt. On previous trips, he's been bogged down with paperwork, and experienced visa and border entry troubles. Not to mention, a loss to UFC Interim Welterweight Champion George St. Pierre in November 2003 in Canada.

Spratt said there is no comparison between his bout with St. Pierre and his upcoming match.

"George St. Pierre was good," he said. "Ryan Ford ain't no good."

Ford carries an unblemished record into the ring. He most recently fought at MFC 14 where he finished off Mike Sorenson via TKO in the first minute of the second round.

YAMMA PIT FIGHTING - NEW FORCE ON THE MMA SCENE!

1-29-2008

Denver, CO, PNW

New League to Revolutionize Mixed Martial Arts

First Pay-Per-View Event Set for April 11, 2008

Los Angeles, January 29, 2008 – Ultimate Fighting Championship founder Bob Meyrowitz and his company Rope Partners today announced the formation of a brand new mixed martial arts (MMA) league, YAMMA Pit Fighting (YPF). Continuing in his role as a trailblazer in MMA, Meyrowitz and YPF will take a unique approach to the sport by reviving the Tournament fighting format and unveiling a new fighting surface that promises to revolutionize the traditional MMA approach.

YAMMA Pit Fighting will host a series of pay-per-view television events, the first of which will air live from the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City on April 11, 2008.

YAMMA Pit Fighting will return to the popular origins of MMA by reviving the Tournament format, in which fighters will participate in multiple fights on their way to claiming the ultimate YAMMA victory, the title of YAMMA Heavyweight Champion. In addition to the exciting Tournament, YPF will also host two "Masters Superfights," one-on-one matches between some of MMA's most illustrious and legendary fighters.

Bob Meyrowitz is a veteran in the MMA industry, and it was through his guidance and vision that the Ultimate Fighting Championship was created. Now Meyrowitz is at it again with his company Rope Partners – creating a new league to once again keep Martial Arts and the sport of MMA moving forward.

"It's with great excitement that we launch YAMMA Pit Fighting," said Bob Meyrowitz. "Our deep and proven knowledge of the entertainment and MMA spheres put us in a great position to add a new dimension to the presentation of MMA as it moves into the future."

The YPF surface, known as "The YAMMA" is an evolution of the traditional fighting ring that will greatly alter the current basis of MMA by changing how the fight is fought and the strategy the fighters must use to win. This new surface has been specifically designed to keep the fighting more explosive and continuous. The YAMMA will change the face of the sport and will challenge the relevance of the fighters' trademark tactics, as methods that were previously successful may be rendered useless with the new ring. This twist on an already successful sport will prove hugely popular with fighters and MMA audiences alike.

The fighting line up, commentators, rules and regulations, ticketing information and more event details will be announced on an ongoing basis beginning in February.

“BANG” Battles Berger At “Strikeforce At The Dome”

1-28-2008, Denver, CO

Event date: February 23, 2008

Venue: Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, Washington

TACOMA, WA.—In a classic clash of styles, World Muay Thai Champion, Duane “Bang” Ludwig (16-7), will be challenged by the ground fighting expertise of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace, Steve “The Red Nosed Pit Bull” Berger (20-17-2), in a 170 lb. limit matchup during “Strikeforce At The Dome” at Tacoma, Washington’s Tacoma Dome on Saturday, February 23rd.

A true fan favorite, the 29-year-old Ludwig was explosive in his last appearance, a September 15th matchup with another Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stud, Mario Stapel, in Broomfield, Colorado. At the 1:50 mark of the fight’s opening round, Bang put Stapel on his back with a short left hook-straight right hand combination.

Ludwig’s February 23rd start will be his fifth under the Strikeforce umbrella. In his fourth effort with the  mega-promotion, the Denver, Colorado native was stopped by an explosive Paul “Semtex” Daly.

Six months prior to the bout with Daley, though, it was Ludwig dishing out the beating, a relentless offensive on Tony “The Freak” Fryklund, during Strikeforce’s “Triple Threat” event. Fryklund was dropped three times before being finished with a right hand that put him on the mat and prompted the referee to stop the bout in the second stanza.

Ludwig shattered the all-time record for the quickest finish mixed martial arts history when he delivered a crushing right hand that finished Jonathan Goulet only 11 seconds into their Spike TV live, televised matchup on January 16, 2006.

During his professional fighting career that dates back to 1998, Berger has been tested by a host of the sport’s top talent and has stopped the likes of The Ultimate Fighter reality show veterans, “Mr. International” Shonie Carter and Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt.

Recently, Berger has been busy competing on the bodogFIGHT circuit. Of the three starts he has made with the promotion, his best showing came against Sweden’s Piotr Jakaczynski in Costa Rica on February 16, 2007.

Berger broke the Swede’s nose early in the matchup, but Jakaczynski refused to quit. Both fighters threw a steady dose of bombs at one another, but it was Berger who emerged victorious on the judges’ scorecards after three bloody rounds.

“Strikeforce At The Dome” will be presented by bodogFIGHT. Tickets for the event, priced at $150, $75 and $35, are on sale at all Ticketmaster locations (253-627-TIXS), the Tacoma Dome box office, and Ticketmaster.com.

Former NFL lineman turned martial arts fighting sensation, Bob “The Beast” Sapp (8-2-1), will collide with another monstrous specimen of man in 6’10” Jan “The Giant” Nortje (25-17) in the “Strikeforce At The Dome” main event.

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion and K-1 North America king, Maurice “Big Mo” Smith (73-20-4), will battle fellow legend and six-time world kickboxing champion, Rick “The Jet” Roufus (57-7), in a heavyweight contest.

“Strikeforce At The Dome” will feature 10 world-class, professional mixed martial arts bouts. Doors at  Tacoma Dome will open at 7 PM PST and the first fight will begin at 8 PM PST. The event is being promoted by Strikeforce in conjunction with Brian Halquist Productions.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Bas Rutten, Jay Larkin, Eddie Alvarez, Paul Daley, Tonya Evinger, Kala Kolohe Hose

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2008-01-27T17_43_27-08_00

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman focuses on recent developments in two of the most important mixed martial arts companies, EliteXC and the International Fight League (IFL).

EliteXC held a card Friday, Jan. 25, at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This card was televised in the U.S. on Showtime on their ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series, which features up-and-coming fighters, as does their ShoBox series for boxing.

On that card, in the main event, local favorite Eddie Alvarez (http://www.myspace.com/ed_alvarez) knocked out Ross Ebanez in the second round. Paul Daley of England scored a first-round knockout over Sam Morgan. Kala Kolohe Hose of Honolulu scored a first-round knockout over Fred Belleton. Former U.S. national women's wrestling team member Tonya Evinger defeated Julie Kedzie with a first-round rear naked choke submission in what some are calling an upset.

After their fights, we spoke with Eddie Alvarez, Paul Daley, Tonya Evinger, and Kala Kolohe Hose.

The IFL made a series of important announcements last week, including naming former UFC and Pancrase champion Bas Rutten to the newly-created position of Vice President, Fighter Operations.

We spoke with both Bas Rutten and IFL CEO Jay Larkin about these changes as well as what to expect this year from the IFL on a media teleconference call last week.

NEVADA - Changes Fighter Drug Testing Policy

1-27-2008

Denver, CO

To: All Nevada Licensees
From: John R. Bailey, Chairman
Subject: Additional Steroid and Drug Testing

Through all of our collective efforts, we have come a long way in eradicating the use of prohibited substances (e.g., steroids) in unarmed combat in Nevada. There is however much work to be done. While the vast majority of our licensed fighters understand the health risks and unfair competitive advantage associated with the use of prohibited substances, the Commission continues to identify a small number of fighters who refuse to comply with our statutes and regulations. There has been some indication through comments made during the Commission’s public meetings that these non-compliant fighters have become very sophisticated in the timing of taking prohibited substances.

Therefore, in addition to the steroid and drug tests performed on contestants on fight night, the Commission will be requiring fighters licensed by the Commission, and applicants for such licensure, to submit to these tests when ordered by the Commission at other times during the year. (The costs of these “pre-fight night” tests will be paid by the Commission.) The process for selecting which fighters are required to submit to these tests will be based on: (i) a random selection; (ii) some indication that a particular fighter may be using a prohibited substance; or (iii) the fact that a fighter has previously tested positive for using a prohibited substance.

The Commission will contact the fighter directly and will also attempt to contact the fighter’s promoter, if known, with the ordering of the test and the timeframe within which the test must be taken. If a fighter either fails to take the test within that the required timeframe or fails the test, the Commission may refuse to license the fighter, refuse to allow the fighter to compete, and/or discipline the fighter. As you know, the Commission’s primary goal is to deter fighters from taking non-approves substances. Consequently, the Commission is hopeful that all tests will come back negative.

The Commission and its staff appreciate your efforts to ensure that competition between fighters in Nevada is conducted in a fair manner and that each fighter’s health is not compromised by the use of prohibited substances. If you have any questions or comments on this matter, please contact the Commission’s Executive Director, Keith Kizer at (702) 486-2575. As always, please feel free to contact any Commissioner with any concerns you may have. Thank you.

IFC - Names ``Bas'' Rutten Vice President, Fighter Operations

1-24-2008

Denver, CO

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The International Fight League (OTC.BB: IFLI) today announced the latest step in its reorganization heading into the 2008 season, naming Mixed Martial Arts legend Sebastian “Bas” Rutten to the newly-created position of Vice President, Fighter Operations. Rutten, who has been with the IFL since its inception as a coach and commentator, will oversee the contact between the IFL, its current athletes and other athletes in the sport, as well as working to create potential future matchups and cards both internally and with other organizations. He will report directly to IFL CEO Jay Larkin.

The 42 year old Dutchman competed professionally for over 20 years in various MMA disciplines, and was a three time champion in Pancrase (the Japanese precursor to what is now MMA) as well as holding the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight title.

He became interested in martial arts when he was 14 after seeing the Bruce Lee classic film “Enter the Dragon,” and began taking up Tae Kwon Do and other forms of karate. He had had skin problems and asthma as a youngster in Tilburg, the Netherlands, and martial arts became an excellent outlet for his growing athletic ability. His professional career began with Pancrase, the upstart Japanese fighting organization in 1993 and he rose through the ranks to take his first “King of Pancrase” title in 1995, defeating Minoru Suzuki. He defended the title twice and ended his Pancrase career with 19 straight wins.

In 1998, Rutten signed with the UFC, taking the heavyweight title from Kevin Randleman in just his second bout. He vacated the title later in the year in order to drop down to his natural middleweight category, but a series of serious injuries forced him to retire. In July 2006 he made one more come back, he defeated his opponent Ruben Villareal by way of leg kicks in the first round and finished his career with 22 straight wins.

Following his retirement, Rutten moved on to coaching, acting and broadcasting, landing roles on TV shows like “Martial Law,” and “The King of Queens,” as well as three movies, “The Eliminator,” “The Vault” and “The Kingdom of Ultimate Power.” He was also the color commentator on PRIDE’s Fighting Championship events, where his sense of humor and intimate knowledge of the sport immediately made him a fan favorite. He has also produced four DVDs on workouts and techniques and written two books, Bas Rutten’s Big Books of Combat.

Bas, who uses the nickname “El Guapo” (named after the villain in the comedy The Three Amigos) has been with the IFL as one of its founding coaches, most recently training and coaching IFL standouts like current welterweight champion Jay Hieron, Chris Horodecki, Benji Radach and Alex Schoenauer, and rising MMA legend Kimbo Slice, among others. He has also been the face of the IFL on television, teaming with Kenny Rice on IFL broadcasts on FSN, MyNetworkTV and HDNet that have been seen in over 200 countries worldwide in 2007. He is also the co-host of “Inside MMA” with Rice, a role which he will continue. Rutten also owns two gyms in the Los Angeles area and is one of the top trainers for many of Hollywood’s elite.

Rutten lives and trains in Los Angeles with his wife and has three daughters.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON - Sponsors UFC and WEC
1-19-2008

Denver, CO

MILWAUKEE (January 19, 2008) - Harley-Davidson Motor Company has teamed up with the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) and World Extreme Cagefighting® (WEC™) organizations as a presenting sponsor and exclusive motorcycle sponsor.

“This is the first major worldwide sports sponsorship for Harley-Davidson outside the motorcycle/automotive category,” said Harley-Davidson Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Mark-Hans Richer. “We see our brand embodied in these fighters: young, aggressive, hard working individuals who cut against the grain.”

“Like Harley-Davidson, UFC is a true American passion that transcends cultures and languages, and shares incredible and growing popularity in the United States, Europe and around the world. Harley-Davidson is a powerhouse brand, we are proud to call it our exclusive UFC and WEC motorcycle sponsor and to have the historic Harley-Davidson Bar & Shield in the Octagon,” said UFC President Dana White.

Harley-Davidson’s sponsorship began with the UFC 79: NEMESIS event December 29, 2007 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, as witnessed
by a sell-out audience of more than 11,000 and millions more on television around the world.

Harley-Davidson sponsorship of the UFC and WEC events includes its historic Bar & Shield logo placement in the center spot on the Octagon™ canvas, as a press conference and weigh-in backdrop and in other event locations. In addition, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and advertisements will appear at other UFC and WEC events and locations. The Company is also encouraging its independent dealers to hold UFC “fight night” events and customer parties in conjunction with a limited number of appropriate UFC events.

The first such dealer events begin with UFC 80: RAPID FIRE, held today in Newcastle, England, which will be broadcast live at noon Pacific Time (3 p.m. ET) as “The Prodigy” BJ Penn faces Joe “Daddy” Stevenson for the UFC World Lightweight Championship.

EDDIE GOLDMAN & BOB CARSON discuss the Zuffa-era UFC
1-18-2008

Denver, CO

Legendary combative sports journalist Eddie Goldman is the guest this week on Carson's Corner.

Eddie (catch his shows at
http://nhbnews.blogspot.com/) and Bob sit down for an extended discussion and proceed to put Zuffa under the microscope. If you're a fan of MMA, you will not want to miss this show. You will hear about a side of the UFC that you might not be aware of, and certainly won't be comfortable with. You will hear about how Dana White possibly backstabbed the MMA media, how Zuffa mistreated and mishandled PrideFC, mistreated and mishandled Randy Couture and much, much, much more.

You won't want to miss Goldman's commentary on the state of most MMA radio shows today ( e.g., Sherdog's radio programs, etc.). It alone is worth the price of admission!

Bob also answers perhaps the zaniest listener emails to date and previews the upcoming UFC 80 show.

If you've been on the fence about catching an episode of Carson's Corner, this is the show to jump on board. We're backing this show up with a money-back guarantee!
