On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman reviews the Dec. 29 IFL Grand Prix Finals, which was held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

We spoke with five of the IFL individual champions about their victorious fights and what their plans are: lightweight (155 lbs.) champion Ryan Schultz, featherweight (145 lbs.) champion Wagnney Fabiano, welterweight (170 lbs.) champion Jay Hieron, middleweight (185 lbs.) champion Matt Horwich, and light heavyweight (205 lbs.) champion Vladimir Matyushenko. We also spoke with middleweight Tim Kennedy, who was victorious on this card.

At this event, we once again spoke with "The Natural," Randy Couture, the now-former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion who recently resigned from that promotion. Randy told us which former wrestling champion has said that he would like to compete against him in a grappling match. He also updated us on what his other plans were and the latest in his dispute with the UFC promoters.

We spoke with mixed martial arts legend Ken Shamrock at this event. He discussed his plans for next year as a coach in the IFL, commented on the historical role of the original Lion’s Den in MMA, told us about his coaching a victorious MMA team in Manila, revealed whom he may fight next in MMA, and explained the need for non-exclusive contracts and a fighters' union in MMA.

We also spoke with Guy Mezger, president and matchmaker for the HDNet Fights promotion. HDNet telecast the IFL Grand Prix live in the U.S. on their television network. We discussed with Guy when and where the next HDNet Fights show is likely to take place, who might fight on it, how HDNet Fights is working with other promotions as partners, how HDNet Fights has become the primary sporting event on HDNet, and how HDNet Fights differs from the UFC.

In addition, we spoke with country music star Trace Adkins, who attended this event. And we spoke with Leo Khorolinsky, the manager of former UFC heavyweight champion and current top contender Andrei Arlovski about what is next for his fighter.

IFL Coaches, LA BOXING Locations To Hold Free Self-Defense Classes

12-28-2007

Denver, CO

At Least Eight Schools To Support National Initiative

NEW YORK, December 28, 2007 – The International Fight League (OTC.BB: IFLI) today announced that many of its world-champion coaches and athletes will host free classes at their respective martial arts academies and at LA BOXING locations, in support of the National Self-Defense Institute’s “Self-Defense Awareness Month” in January. In all, at least eight schools will hold free classes nationwide. These and other coaches may also sponsor additional classes during the month.

The academies involved will include those of such mixed martial arts stars as Bas Rutten, Matt Lindland, Pat Miletich, Marco Ruas and Renzo Gracie, as well as athletes from their IFL camps, with events being held in New York, Chicago, Southern California, South Florida, Las Vegas and other cities. The classes are open to men and women of all ages and are on a first come, first serve basis. Those interested in participating should contact the school in advance for more information.

“The IFL and our coaches are proud to be promoting Self-Defense Awareness Month in this way,” said IFL Co-founder and Commissioner Kurt Otto. “Many people, particularly women, utilize martial arts for self-defense purposes, and by providing these free classes, our coaches and athletes, in concert with LA BOXING, are making an important commitment to help people in the same communities in which they train their IFL teams and others where they run academies.”

National Self-Defense Institute (www.nsdi.org) utilizes the opportunity to promote its SAFE (Self-Defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange) program. The program has a two-fold purpose: to prevent crimes of sexual violence through programs of education and training, focusing primarily on awareness and prevention; and to educate women about realistic options that will help them avoid, escape, and survive assaults if they do occur.

Following is the schedule of free classes to date; participants are urged to check www.ifl.tv/SelfDefense08.html for an updated list, and to call ahead to the academy in their respective area to reserve a spot.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Chris Horodecki, Jay Hieron, Paulie Malignaggi, Herman Ngoudjo, Kurt Otto, IFL Grand Prix and 2008 Roadmap

12-27-2007

Denver, CO

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman previews the Dec. 29 IFL Grand Prix Finals, discusses the 2008 IFL Roadmap, and
previews the Jan. 5 fight between Paulie Malignaggi and Herman Ngoudjo.

The International Fight League (IFL) will be holding its 2007 Grand Prix Finals, featuring mixed martial arts fights for individual championships in five weight classes, Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on HDNet and in Canada on Fox Sports World Canada. We discuss all these five title fights and the histories of the fighters involved.

We also hear the comments of 155-pound fighter Chris Horodecki, who fights Ryan Schultz for that title, and 170-pound fighter Jay Hieron,
who fights Delson Heleno in another title fight, from a recent media teleconference call.

The IFL will be making some significant changes as it begins its third year of existence in 2008. Most are aimed at expanding the popularity
of their organization while cutting financial losses. They issued their 2008 IFL Roadmap (http://www.ifl.tv/Roadmap08.html) outlining these changes, and we offer our comments on that. We also spoke with IFL co-founder and commissioner Kurt Otto on a media teleconference call to discuss this and some other issues with him.

Boxing returns in a big way in the new year with a title fight between IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (23-1, 5 KOs) and
challenger Herman Ngoudjo (16-1, 9 KOs) January 5, 2008, at Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and shown live in the
U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with both Paulie Malignaggi and Herman Ngoudjo on a media teleconference call (or at least tried to).

IFL Changes For 2008
12-20-2007

Denver, CO

IFL Commissioner Kurt Otto spoke with the media Wednesday afternoon to address a topic that’s had the rumor-mill churning for months now: how will the IFL change in 2008? The answer, according to Otto, is considerably. Not only will the team format itself undergo some alterations, but so will the entire way the IFL season is structured.

“This is an opportunity for us to transition from what was deemed contrived teams to the official camp format that exists in MMA now,” Otto said.

“We’re going to be streamlining our camp system to three-man teams, but we’re still going to bring four teams to each event. It’s all about creating great matchups.”

“Our goal is to ultimately show which fighting style and which camp is the best. We realize that coaches, trainers and athletes have commitments in other organizations, but holes do exist for challenges, especially with up-and-coming fighters.”

Otto noted that league plans to move away from the pre-set teams that were established early on and focus instead on the genuine training camps that exist within the sport. He also said he would encourage new fight camps to come into the league and challenge existing IFL fighters, rather than closing teams out due to the regular season format that has been in place up to this point.

“We provide an open platform for all camps to come forward and expose their rising stars on television and in front of a large live audience against the most established camps in the business (our name fighters and coaches), and give that camp name exposure on every platform. Those are opportunities these camps cannot get with any other organization or on their own.”

One of the format changes that will take place, Otto said, involved doing away with the five-on-five aspect of former IFL team fights, and instead moving to a system that would bring three fighters from each competing team to each event, while not forcing the coach to come up with one and only fighter for each weight class.

The idea here, Otto explained, was to give the league more flexibility with its matchmaking. He stated that the matchups in the future would be dictated by which fight seems the most compelling and makes the most sense, rather than simply forcing a fight at every weight class.

One of the biggest changes will be brought on by the addition of title fights. After individual weight class champions are crowned at the IFL World Grand Prix on Dec. 29, those belts will be defended in future events as a sort of unofficial superfight in addition to the team matchups on the card.

“You’re going to see title fights that make it almost like a Grand Prix that runs throughout the year,” Otto said.

Though the season will change shape as it moves to a more open format, there will still be a team championship awarded to the camp that proves itself the most dominant, Otto said.

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Fox Sports en Español to bring the Ultimate Fighting Championship to its millions of Spanish-language viewers around the country,” said Dana White, UFC President. “We are looking forward to launching ‘Guerreros del UFC’ and to introducing the world’s most exciting brand of professional mixed martial arts – the UFC – to an even greater number of Hispanic fans.”

“We’re excited to welcome the UFC back to our Friday Fight Night block,” said David Sternberg, executive vice president and general manager of Fox Sports en Español. “We have no doubt that this first-ever series of original mixed martial arts shows in Spanish will be a huge hit with our audience.”

The series will then debut in its regularly scheduled time slot on Friday, January 4 at 11 p.m. ET/ 8 p.m. PT, and will run weekly for the entire year. FSE plans to debut two episodes of “Guerreros del UFC” each month in 2008, starting in January.

“Guerreros del UFC” will be hosted by one of Mexico’s mixed martial arts experts, Victor Davila, along with play-by-play commentator Troy Santiago.

In the fall of 2006, Fox Sports en Español and the UFC® organization made television history when they signed an exclusive one-year deal giving the network Spanish-language television and video-on-demand rights to “Gladiadores del UFC™,” a series of six one-hour UFC fight specials that aired over the course of six months.

Founding MMA Brand Will Be Showcased Under ProElite’s Global Live Events Division

Honolulu (Dec. 16, 2007) – Sensational news for Mixed Martial Arts fans in Hawaii. ICON Sport, Hawaii’s original MMA brand and leader since 1995, is about to get bigger – and better.

ProElite, Inc. [PELE.PK], an entertainment and media company dedicated to producing world-class MMA events, today announced the acquisition of ICON Sport, Hawaii’s first and most lucrative MMA organization.

The formal announcement of the new partnership was made by Gary Shaw, President of EliteXC, the respected live fight division of Los Angeles, Calif.-based ProElite, Inc.

“This is an exciting day for all of our organizations, but the biggest winners will be fans in Hawaii,’’ Shaw said. “In a short span of 12 months, EliteXC has already got the well-deserved reputation for staging sensational fights with the world’s top fighters.

“With the acquisition of ICON Sport, ProElite and EliteXC continue to establish itself as the fast-growing, premier MMA organization in the world. I look forward to developing Hawaii as the next stronghold in MMA.

“ProElite’s partnership will help secure ICON’s foothold in Hawaii’s dominance in MMA, as well as provide the resources needed to expand the company’s operations into an international fight brand.”

ICON’s vision is to provide a foundation that nurtures the original spirit of martial arts in its students, as evidenced in the feng shui designed interior of the school, and develop the next wave of MMA greats in this worldwide sport.

“From day one we have discovered the raw talent that make up Hawaiian MMA in Kaleo Kwan, Kala Kalohe Hose, Mark Oshiro, and Hawaiian trained EliteXC Lightweight Champion KJ Noons,’’ ICON’s ” T.J. Thompson said .

“ICON [formerly SuperBrawl] also began the career path for greats such as Frank Shamrock, Vitor Belfort, Matt Hughes, Rich Franklin, Tim Sylvia, Robbie Lawler, Mayhem Miller, Frank Trigg and Takanori Gomi.

“Hawaii grows warriors and will continue to give rise to MMA’s future champions”.

Broken Toe Sidelines Alaska Native, NYU Grad; Gunderson To Take On Horodecki For Lightweight Championship

NEW YORK, December 13, 2007 – John “Guns” Gunderson (Medford, Ore.), standout for the Lions, will replace Shad Lierley (Seattle) in the International Fight League World Grand Prix lightweight championship against undefeated (11-0) star Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki (London, Ontario) on Saturday, December 29, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Lierley broke a toe in training and is unable to compete at the event, at which five Championship bouts, believed to be unprecedented in North America, will take place.

Gunderson went 2-1 during the regular season for Coach Ken Shamrock’s Lions, defeating Josh Odom and Gabe Casillas via submission and falling in an exciting split decision to Bart Palaszewski. He is 15-5 in his mixed martial arts career, including a 2-2 mark in IFL matches. Horodecki has won all four of his 2008 matches and is 7-0 in IFL competition.

Tickets for the Finals can be purchased at the Mohegan Sun box office, online at www.Ticketmaster.com, or by calling Ticketmaster at 1-860-886-0070.

ICON SPORT - Lawler's title defense cancelled!
12-12-2007

Denver, CO

Saturday’s Event In Honolulu To Be Rescheduled; Hawaiian Accepts Offer To Fight Jan. 25 On ShoXC

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 12, 2007) – This Saturday’s fight between EliteXC and ICON Sport middleweight champion Robbie Lawler and Kala Kolohe Hose was officially cancelled Monday. The announcement was made during a late afternoon press conference in Honolulu.

“We were all really looking forward to this event and to this fight because, style-wise, Lawler-Hose was going to be a great one,’’ said EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw. “Robbie is a great world champion, but, unfortunately, injuries can happen to athletes in all sports.

“I feel badly for the fighters and the fans in Hawaii, who are some of the best in the word. Once Lawler is healthy, we are going to begin working to make the fight happen.’’

The world title match had to be called off after Lawler completely tore his right bicep while doing wrestling drills last week.

“I heard something pop when I was doing a Muay Thai clinch,’’ said Lawler, who flew in from St. Louis to attend the press conference.

“I thought it was a minor thing so I took it easy for a few days. I felt good enough to go bowling, but when I tried to swing the ball, I felt a horrible pain, like my arm had collapsed. It was definitely much worse than I thought.’’

A doctor confirmed the injury, which will keep Lawler sidelined approximately six weeks.

“I want to apologize to everybody,’’ Lawler said. “I am deeply sorry for the fans and the media, the promoters, Patrick and T. Jay, but, most importantly Kala Kolohe. I also want to apologize to all the undercard fighters that sacrificed and trained hard but now have to wait for another opportunity.’’

So, too, will Hose, after a second consecutive fight with Lawler fell through. Hose and Lawler were scheduled to clash in June but the event was postponed after Lawler suffered a shoulder injury.

Hose, who is known as “The Hawaiian Rocky Balboa’’ and trains in a garage, was more than disappointed on Monday.
“I’m heartbroken,’’ he said. “I trained so hard and gave up so much of myself for this chance to fight Lawler. To have two fights not happen is very hard on not only me, but my family and team. This was going to be my big shot. But, once again, it went out the window. But my time will come.’’

Promoters fought intensely to salvage the show, but Hose was adamant that his next fight be against Lawler. Ultimately, however, Hose was offered a prominent spot on the ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series card Jan. 25, 2008, on SHOWTIME, which he accepted. Win or lose, he will remain the ICON No. 1 contender.

“We all feel just terrible about this, but ICON Sport is committed to giving its fans the best possible events,’’ Thompson said. “We really wanted this show to happen and tried hard to save it.

“But to meet our fans’ high expectations and after speaking with Kala and Lawler, we reached a decision to delay the “Fearless” world title matchup and undercard.

“A new date will be announced very soon.’’

CNBC presents “ULTIMATE FIGHTING: FROM BLOOD SPORT TO BIG TIME”

12-11-2007

Denver, CO

AN ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY TAKES A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT THE BUSINESS BEHIND THE NATION'S FASTEST-GROWING SPORT

One-Hour Special Reported by CNBC's Scott Wapner to Premiere on Thursday, December 13th at 10PM & 1AM ET on CNBC

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., In an unprecedented event, CNBC, First in Business Worldwide, takes a no-holds barred look at the business behind the nation's fastest growing sports franchise: Ultimate Fighting. On Thursday, December 13th at 10PM & 1AM ET, CNBC presents an original one-hour documentary, "Ultimate Fighting: From Blood Sport to Big Time," reported by CNBC's Scott Wapner.

With unusual access, the program tells the story behind the rise of the Ultimate Fighting Championship as both a business and cultural phenomenon. From its controversial beginnings to its mainstream acceptance and millions of dollars in ticket sales, the UFC is making money hand over fist.

"As mixed martial arts'most prominent league, the UFC, is not just exploding in popularity, but expanding as a financial empire," said Josh Howard, VP Long Form and Special Programming. "This documentary exposes a dying franchise resurrected from violent and controversial beginnings to one of the most successful ventures in all of professional sports."

CNBC profiles the Ultimate Fighting Championship President and popular frontman Dana White, a college dropout from South Boston, who has used a fighter's instincts and shrewd business sense to overcome a series of hurdles facing the league, including the fact that it remains unsanctioned in a number of states.

The program examines Ultimate Fighting's presence not just in the sporting world, but also on the landscape of popular culture. With a devoted fan base of young males, the franchise is in many ways an advertiser's dream, though one that Madison Avenue has approached with some caution because of its controversial nature. CNBC takes a look at the range of promotions, endorsements and movie deals tied to the sport as well as at TapouT, the successful apparel company created by three hardcore fans whom turned their passion for mixed martial arts into a thriving multi-million dollar business.

CNBC takes viewers to fight night on the Las Vegas strip, where Ultimate Fighting has given the sport of boxing a run for its money and attracted the kind of attention and money critics once thought impossible.

"Ultimate Fighting: From Blood Sport to Big Time," re-airs on Sunday, December 16th at 10PM ET and Monday, December 17th at 9PM & 12AM ET.

The executive producer of "Ultimate Fighting: From Blood Sport to Big Time," is Mitch Weitzner. Josh Howard is the executive in charge of production and Vice President of Long Form and Special Programming.

XTREME FIGHTING ASSOCIATION (XFA) - Announces Fighter Casting Call

12-10-2007

Denver, CO

This is a new K-1 Rules Professional Fight Promotion Company, based in Las Vegas, is ready to make it debut on April 19, 2008. It's venues will include the Cox Pavilion on the UNLV Campus, and the Thomas and Mack Center. The XFA is fueled by FAIRTEX Muay Thai as its main sponsor and operations partner.

The XFA is holding a Casting Call to build its initial Fighter Stable. Tryouts will be held on January 19, 2008, in Las Vegas. This is an excellent ground floor opportunity to fight in the limelight with a Promotion that is moving forward with a lot of resources and backing. Fighters in these events will enjoy rapid exposure of their skills, since all events will have Pay-per-View coverage, and as such, will provide the fighters with wide open windows of opportunity to move up the ladder rapidly. These opportunities are especially lucrative for good stand-up fighters that perhaps have not adapted well to ground-fighting on the current MMA scene.
