NEW ERA FIGHTING - Files $500-million claim against California State Athletic Commission

10-2-2007

Denver, CO

SANTA ANA, California – New Era Fighting (NEF) has filed a state regulated claims form to the State of California, initiating a $500,000,000 lawsuit against the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), individuals Armando Garcia (CSAC Executive Director) and Frank Munoz (CSAC Staff Services Analyst), as well as the State’s Department of Consumer Affairs, NEF president Ron Kort announced today.

The lawsuit is the result of the CSAC’s cease and desist order, issued only minutes prior to NEF’s much publicized scheduled tryouts July 19 in Montebello, which forced the cancellation of NEF’s tryouts. The CSAC claimed Kort wasn’t a licensed promoter despite having approved his application, awarding him a promoter’s license, and cashed his renewal check ($1000) for 2007 (copies available upon request).

NEF is in the process of launching possibly the largest suit in California history against the aforementioned parties for loss of revenues (past, present and future), film production, media exposure, credibility, television show, venue deposits, fighters and opportunity costs.

Kort believes the State is responsible, “due to a pattern and practice by the California State Athletic Commission of intentionally, willfully and viciously interfering with a licensed and approved event, which effected and injured New Era Fighting in the same or similar fashion as other mixed martial arts promoters, managers and fighters.”

“Many witnesses have come forth offering to testify about many purported illegal acts in mixed martial arts by the California State Athletic Commission,” Kort said. “The support I’ve received from so many others who have gotten screwed over by this commission has been overwhelming. I look forward to my day in court.”

NEF is a mixed martial arts fighting organization that combines the raw brutality of mixed martial arts with entertaining, sexy and dramatic themes. For more information about NEF go on line to

Matchups Set for K-1 World GP Final
10-1-2007

Denver, CO
Written by Monty DiPietro.
http://www.k-1.co.jp/k-1gp/dtop.htm

SEOUL -- The K-1 World Grand Prix '07 Final Eight were determined at the Seoul Olympic Complex last night. Today, in the Grand Ballroom of the COEX Intercontinental hotel, the first-tier matchups were set for the December 8 Yokohama Arena GP Final.

The pairings were decided with a system that combines choice and chance. One after the other, in an order decided by lot, the fighters were free to select any available position on the tournament tree.

French K-1 veteran Jerome LeBanner got the first choice, and went to the "A" spot, red corner in the first bout. This is a fighters' favorite, as competing first affords the winner a longer rest period before the semifinals.

Twenty-three year-old Japanese wunderkind Junichi Sawayashiki, who had drawn the number two selection, went against the "start early" strategy, opting to avoid LeBanner and instead put himself in the "H" spot, blue corner in the fourth quarterfinal. LeBanner was seen having a bit of a laugh at this.

Next up was Korean fighter Hong-Man Choi, and the biggest guy in the tournament, who made a bit of a deke on the stage, suggesting he might line up beside Sawayashiki before walking over to the "B" spot and a date with LeBanner. This delighted the Frenchman, who exchanged high-fives with Choi.

"I am very happy to fight this giant guy," said LeBanner, "December 8 will be a new Pearl Harbor!" Said Choi: "I am honored to be fighting someone I respect."

Two-time WGP Champ Peter Aerts of the Netherlands was up next, taking the spot beside Sawayashiki to set up a fight between the tournament's oldest fighter (Aerts is 36) and the second-youngest (Sawayashiki is 23).

"He had a good fight last night," said Aerts, "but I chose him because he has less experience." Sawayashiki just smiled and joked, "Same with me."

Two-time WGP Champ Remy Bonjasky of Holland got the fifth choice, and went to the "F" spot, blue in the 3rd fight. He was followed by Moroccan Badr Hari, the K-1 Heavyweight Champ and youngest fighter in the tournament (Hari's birthday is December 8, he will turn 23 on the day of the tournament). Hari made his way directly to the "E" spot, pairing himself with Bonjasky.

"I've wanted to fight Remy for long time," said Hari, "if I'm lucky I can get him and Peter in one night!" Said Bonjasky: "Hari is talented, but now comes now the real challenge for him."

This left Semmy Schilt, the two-time and Defending WGP Champ and the current K-1 Super Heavyweight Champ to fight Brazilian Kyokushin star Glaube Feitosa. Schilt had the next choice and went to the red corner in the second bout, leaving Feitosa the blue.

Schilt: "I'm just happy to be in this first bracket!" Feitosa: "It's an honor to fight defending champion, I will do my best."

The truly international Final, featuring three Dutch fighters and one each from France, Morocco, Brazil, South Korea and Japan, is set for December 8 at the Yokohama Arena. Check the K-1 Official website (www.k-1.co.jp/k-1gp) for complete fighter information and coverage of all K-1 events.

CFFC set to take Atlantic City by Storm on October 12th
9-27-2007

Denver, CO

What a difference a year makes. Just last June, Cage Fury Fighting Championships was holding its inaugural event at Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, in front of about 2,000 screaming fans. Fast forward a little more than one year later, and CFF6 is set to explode at The Trump Taj Mahal, in Atlantic City, NJ. The amount of talent on hand is staggering, punctuated by two title fights, as well as a few big names taking the plunge into their first MMA bout ever. October 12th promises to be a night of fights not soon forgotten.

Main Card:
Kimbo Slice vs. David "Tank" Abbott
Ricardo Almeida vs. Dennis Hallman
Derrick Panza vs. Duke Roufus
Devidas Taurosevicius vs. Chris Ligouri (NABC Lightweight Title Fight)
Jim Miller vs. Chris Brennan (CFFC Lightweight Title Fight)
Marcio "Pe de pano" Cruz vs. TBA

Undercard:
Mike Littlefield vs. Jose Rodriguez
Jarrid Palmer vs. John Doyle
Malachy Friedman vs. Anthony Morrison

Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbot
This fight has "Fireworks" written all over it. Internet superstar, turned Mixed Martial Artist, Kimbo Slice, returns for the second time in Cage Fury to prove that his first win was not a fluke. Kimbo looked far removed from his street fighting persona, which made him an internet legend, in his last fight where he dispatched former Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Ray Mercer, in under two minutes of the first round. He will be taking on Heavy-handed MMA legend David "Tank" Abbot who has amassed a record of 9 wins and thirteen loses spanning over his 12 year career. Tank looks to redeem himself as he has lost his last three fights in various organizations. However, Tank has proven time and time again that you should never count him out as he can end a fight with just one punch.

Ricardo Almeida vs. Dennis Hallman
Ricardo "Cachorrao" Almeida (8-2-0) is an accomplished Mixed Martial Artist as well as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under the legendary Renzo Gracie. Ricardo has fought for many MMA organizations including Pride, UFC, and Pancrase, taking on MMA stars such as Matt "The Law" Lindland, Andrei Semenov and Nate Marquardt along the way. This will be Almeida's first fight since May of 2004. Almeida, on the comeback path, will be taking on Dennis "Superman" Hallman who sports an impressive record of 37 wins, 12 loses and 2 draws. Hallman's fight record reads as a proverbial "Who's who" of MMA fighters including former bouts with Matt Hughes, Jens Pulver, Caol Uno, and Frank Trigg, among others. This promises to be a superb match as both fighters have excellent ground skills, and both look to impress in their Cage Fury debuts.

Derrick Panza vs. Duke Roufus
This is one of the most intriguing matches on the card. Two legendary Kickboxers, stepping into the cage under the Cage Fury banner, for their first MMA fight. Duke Roufus, who has trained many top contenders in Kickboxing and MMA alike, is a Muay Thai Kickboxing prodigy who is also the Former ISKA, WKA, WAKO & IKF World Heavyweight Champion. Most of his 30-plus wins came via knockout before announcing his retirement from the ring back in 2002. Roufus takes on 3 time World Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion, Derrick Panza. Panza has made several forays into the world of Combat Sports, acquiring a record of 19-0 in Full Contact Kickboxing, a record of 7-0 in Boxing, as well as making several appearances in Chuck Norris' World Combat League. This could be a proverbial "Striking Clinic" for all the Cage Fury fans to witness.

Devidas Taurosevicius vs. Chris Ligouri
Devidas Taurosevicius (7-2-0) is a returning Cage Fury veteran, and current NABC Lightweight Champion, that sports a perfect record under the Cage Fury banner. His last loss was to UFC lightweight standout, Frank Edgar, back in August of 2006, but since then Devidas has been on a 4 fight win streak that he does not want to end. In order to keep his perfect Cage Fury record, Devidas must get past talented MMA fighter Chris Ligouri. Ligouri (7-5-0) is coming off a slick submission win at 55 seconds of round one against Dorian Price at CFFC 4. Chris, like Devidas, is also riding a four fight win streak and looks to continue that trend in this fight. One thing is for sure, one fighter will be handed his first loss in the last five fights come October 12th.

Jim Miller vs. Chris Brennan
Cage Fury Fighting Championships Lightweight Title holder, Jim Miller, comes into this fight sporting a professional record of 7 wins and 1 loss. Jim secured his title back in April of this year with a win over Al Buck, and went on to successfully retain his title with a win over Anthony Morrison two months later. Miller puts his CFFC Lightweight Title on the line when he faces off against Chris "The Westside Strangler" Brennan. Brennan (19-11-1) has steadily improved his fight record with 18 of his 19 wins coming via submission. Chris has been a constant figure in MMA competing in top organizations over the past 11 years, but this will be his first fight for CFFC.

Marcio (Pe de pano) Cruz vs. TBA
Marcio "Pe De Pano" Cruz, trained under the legendary Marco Ruas, has accumulated a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. His last win came via DQ of his opponent Rafael Feijao, after an illegal head kick in the 3rd round, back in June of this year. Cruz's only two loses have been to MMA powerhouse's Andrei Arlovski and Jeff Monson. Marcio's most impressive win was over former UFC Heavyweight Title holder, Frank Mir, in February 2006 where Cruz unleashed a brutal Ground and Pound attack for which Mir had no answer for. Cruz's opponent has not been named as of the writing of this article, however you can bet that "Pe De Pano" will be ready for anyone that steps in the cage with him.

Malachy Friedman vs. Anthony Morrison
Malachy Friedman (1-1-0) began his professional mixed martial arts career in 2006, at CFFC 1, winning his debut fight via guillotine choke over Brian Vanes in the second round. Friedman's second fight took place at CFFC 2 against Al Buck. Despite coming out aggressive and almost finishing Buck with a rear naked choke, the fight was stopped when Al Buck unleashed a furious display of ground and pound at 3:40 of the 1st round. Anthony Morrison (6-3-0) is a familiar face to CFFC fans, as he has fought in every CFFC event except CFFC 3. Morrison will be fighting once again on his home turf as he fights out of Joe Diamond's Atlantic City Mixed Martial Arts Academy. Morrison has been compared to a smaller version of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, and even stole a page out of Rampage's book when he slammed Spencer Paige at CFFC 4.

Jarred Palmer vs. John Doyle
Jarred Palmer (3-0-0) training out of CNYMMA, looks to keep his perfect record intact as he faces off against John Doyle (4-1-0). Jarred is known as a heavy handed striker, with two of his three wins coming via TKO, and his third via submission due to strikes. John Doyle has fought for several organizations such as Extreme Challenge and Combat in the Cage, but this will be his first time stepping up as a fighter for Cage Fury. John's only loss was to Hector Urbina at Extreme Challenge 74 due to a choke, but since then, has won his last two fights.

Mike Littlefield vs. Jose Rodriguez
Mike Littlefield (5-2-0) returns to Cage Fury after being stopped by Tamden McCrory at CFFC 2. Littlefield is one of the founding members of the "Boneyard" in Boston, MA, and will be stepping into the cage to face Jose Rodriguez. Rodriguez (3-8-0) trains out of the Rhino Fight Team in Brick, NJ. Rodriguez's last fight was a tough decision loss to Dan Miller at CFFC4. With both fighters coming off a loss, expect both to come out looking for redemption.

Cage Fury Fighting Championships 6: Heavy Hands, will take place on October 12th at Trump's Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ. Tickets are on sale soon. All bouts are live and subject to change.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Todd and Tamera Sturgis, Ross Greenburg, Randy Gordon,

Why UFC Does Not Matter

9-24-2007

Denver, COhttp://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2007-09-24T00_09_22-07_00

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing why the UFC should not matter to real aficionados of the combat sports. This commentary is as no holds barred as it gets.

We then spoke with Todd and Tamera Sturgis, who have just released a wonderful documentary called "Under Pressure: Diary of a Cage Fighter's Wife" (
http://mycagefighter.com). This film, which is premiering at select locations across the US, will soon be available on DVD. It is a must-see for all who want to learn about what combat sports athletes go through on a daily basis, and what their lives are really like.

Next, we pestered Ross Greenburg, the president of HBO Sports, about the never-ending reports that HBO will be televising UFC shows. We caught up with him at this past week's Mayweather-Hatton news conference in New York. We also spoke there with Randy Gordon, former editor of The Ring magazine and chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission from 1988 to 1995, who now has a show on Sirius Satellite Radio (http://www.sirius.com) called Fight Club.

Also, make sure to check out my weekly boxing show, SecondsOut Radio. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, at
http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, we previewed the December 8 showdown between two undefeated champion fighters, WBC welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather (38-0, 24 KOs) and Ricky Hatton (43-0, 31 KOs), who is generally recognized as the top junior welterweight in the world. This fight will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will be shown in the US on HBO Pay-Per-View. At a New York news conference this past week, we spoke about this fight with the light heavyweight champion, Bernard Hopkins, who was there as president of Golden Boy Promotions East, whose parent company is promoting this fight. Floyd Mayweather Jr. sat down for a lengthy roundtable discussion with the New York media at this news conference, and we have that for you.

BODOG FIGHT: Reputation of Fight Clubs at Stake

9-24-2007

Denver, CO
http://www.newBodogFight.com

Where is the best mixed martial arts training facility in the world? The next episode of the hit series Bodog Fight: New Jersey, may answer that question.

Airing Tuesday, September 25 at 11 p.m. / 10 p.m. Central on the ION Television Network, the episode features a pair of middleweight fighters, from two of the best gyms in the world.

Training at the renowned Oregon gym, Team Quest under coach Robert Follis, 29-year-old Chael Sonnen (17-8-1) practices with world-class fighters like Matt "The Law" Lindland and "Dangerous" Dan Henderson.

With impressive victories over Tim McKenzie, Alex Oleinik and Tim Credeur in Bodog Fight, it's obvious that being surrounded by such talent has helped Sonnen raise his own game.

It has helped his bank account as well. In fact, Sonnen's first round knockout of Credeur earned him the title of "favorite fighter" as voted by Bodog Fight viewers, and an extra fifty grand.

"Chael has always been good at fighting," says Lindland. "But in the past, he has treated the sport as a hobby whereas now he's in the gym full time putting in the extra work and his results are starting to show that."

With better results comes better competition, and Sonnen's next opponent is a good example. Armenian Amar Suloev (23-6) has fought some of the best in the sport, including Denis Kang, Chuck Liddell, Phil Baroni, and Din Thomas. His last fight, at Bodog Fight: Clash of the Nations in Russia, ended in just 26 seconds with opponent Andy Foster unconscious and convulsing on the canvas.

"No question, it's going to be a tough fight," says Sonnen. "Amar is strong and he punches and kicks hard."

At the famed Red Devil Sport Club in Russia, Suloev trains with his own team of top-notch fighters, including Fedor and Aleks Emelianenko.

"I grew up watching the Russian athletes and they're tough competitors," says Sonnen. "You only need to look at the medal count in any Olympics for proof the Russian take athletics seriously."

So what is the Oregonian's game plan for Suloev?

"I'm not looking to stand and trade punches with him," says Sonnen. "I'm not afraid to fight him standing up, but not at range. I'd rather get my hands on him and fight him in the clinch, or put him on his back. Either way, I'm prepared to fight hard for fifteen minutes."

Can't catch the action on ION Television (or The Fight Network in Canada)? All episodes of the Bodog Fight series are available worldwide through streaming video at Bodog Fight's Web site, with behind-the-scenes exclusives, fighter bios and additional footage only available online.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER -  Returns Wednesday Night

9-18-2007

Denver, CO
Show time:
09-19-2007 11pm ET/PT, Spike TV

Champion Matt Serra and former champion Matt Hughes have made no bones about their eagerness to get in the Octagon later this year to settle the score with each other. But December was too far away, so beginning this Wednesday night on Spike TV, Serra and Hughes will begin their competition to see who is the best coach, as 16 up and coming talented welterweights battle it out in a quest to find the next ‘Ultimate Fighter’.

The sparks will fly in and out of the Octagon on the hit series’ sixth season (which airs on Spike TV every Wednesday at 10pm), and when the dust settles, only two fighters will remain to fight for a UFC contract and a berth in the sport’s most talent-rich division. The stakes are high, but the rewards are even greater for the fighter looking to follow in the footsteps of UFC stars such as Forrest Griffin, Diego Sanchez, Rashad Evans, Joe Stevenson, Kendall Grove, Michael Bisping, Travis Lutter, Nate Diaz, and the first world champion to emerge from The Ultimate Fighter series, season six coach Matt Serra.

Don’t miss the premiere episode Wednesday night, immediately following UFC Fight Night on Spike TV!

HAWAIIAN PUNCH: LAWLER KNOCKS OUT RUA TO WIN ELITEXC TITLE;
DIAZ, CARANO, SHIELDS AND VILLASENOR ALSO TRIUMPH ON “UPRISING’’
9-16-2007

Denver, CO, PNW

From the Blaisdell Arena in Oahu, Hawaii

In dramatic and convincing fashion, “Ruthless’’ Robbie Lawler captured the EliteXC middleweight championship with an exciting third-round TKO over defending champion Murilo “Ninja” Rua in the EliteXC main event Saturday on SHOWTIME.

Southpaw Lawler, who entered the cage as the ICON Sport middleweight titleholder, rocked and mocked Rua (14-8-1) on several occasions before dropping him with a left hand. He followed with a series of jackhammer right hands and two lefts before the referee stepped in and halted matters at 2:04.

“He tried to take it to the ground a few times,” said Lawler (15-4), of Davenport, Iowa, “but I just shook him off. I didn’t want it to go to the ground. I am in great shape so we just stayed up and I pounded him.”

The biggest, most noteworthy Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event in Hawaii’s history took place at Blaisdell Arena and was presented by Los Angeles, Calif.-based ProElite's respected live fight division, EliteXC, Hawaii-based promoters ICON Sport and ROTR (Rumble On The Rock), and SHOWTIME.

“We promised an ‘Uprising’ and that’s what fans at the arena and those viewing on SHOWTIME got tonight from start to finish,” said EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw. “This was a spectacular night of fights, exactly the type that fans of EliteXC have learned to expect.

“This organization vowed from the beginning to present the best fights and the best fighters. Everyone saw that tonight. There were no losers. Everyone was a winner tonight, especially the fans.

“All the fighters fought their hearts out, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.

“This was truly a historic night for EliteXC, ICON Sport and Rumble On The Rock. We are all very excited about how the fights went and are already looking forward to doing it all over again in Hawaii. The fans here in Hawaii were into it from the get-so, and are exceptionally knowledgeable.’’

In featured fights on an action-packed undercard, Team Gracie (Nick Diaz, Jake Shields) went 2-0 against Team Penn (“Charuto” Verissimo, Mike Aina) in the first-ever fights between the rival, highly respected camps. Diaz registered a hard-earned split decision over the hard-trying Aina in an exhausting, bloody slugfest and the streaking Shields scored a first-round TKO over Verissimo.

The Golden Girl of MMA, Gina Carano remained unbeaten with a victory by submission over Tonya Evinger, and Joey Villasenor outlasted Riki Fukuda to take a split decision in other televised bouts.

“I fought a smart and controlled fight and kept my distance, but that is how I fight these days,’’ said Lawler (Robbielawler.proelite.com) after a smashing victory capped yet another tremendous night of EliteXC fights on SHOWTIME.

“I told my corner after the second round that I was going to knock him out. Even when he landed, I punched back and knew I was hurting him.’

Said Rua (murilorua.proelite.com), of Rio de Janiero, Brazil: “My strategy was not very good tonight.’’

Making his EliteXC debut and first start in six months, southpaw Diaz (15-6, 1 NC), of Stockton, Calif., survived an early knockdown and a cut right eye to outpoint the local favorite, Aina (9-6-1), by the scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 28-29.

Aina, who was as courageous as anyone could expect, landed the more powerful punches, but Diaz connected more often with gyrating jabs and left hands. Diaz was on the verge of choking out Aina at the end of the second round, but Aina was saved by the bell.

“I know I could have fought better, said Diaz (nickdiaz.proelite.com). “I feel good, but I am really disappointed in the way I performed. I should have started a lot faster because Aina fought me with everything he had.

“I don’t know if the layoff had anything to do with it, but I did some stupid things like standing in front of him and getting knocked down. But I wasn’t hurt. The bell definitely saved Aina at the end of the second round. I know I can prepare better. I am looking forward to getting back into the cage.

Carano (5-0), of Las Vegas, was making her first start since her history-making performance Feb. 10, 2007, on SHOWTIME.

“This is such a relief for me because there was a lot of pressure coming into this fight,’’ said Carano (ginacarano.proelite.com), who won by submission (choke-out) over Evinger (5-2) at 2:53 of the first round.

“When she got me down, I knew I couldn’t freak and had to keep my composure. After reversing her, I considered standing up. But I’ve been practicing working on top, so I just went through with it.’’

Offered Evinger (tonyaevinger.proelite.com), of Oak Grove, Mo.: “I made a lot of mistakes. I wrestled terribly. Gina doesn’t hit or kick as hard as they say. I try to work on limiting my mistakes, but I just made too many. I would love to fight her again.”

Villasenor (24-6), of Albuquerque, N.M. won a hard-hitting battle that featured numerous exchanges on the ground and standing up by the scores of 29-28 twice and 28-29.

“I am happy and very relieved,’’ said Villasenor (joeyvillesenor.proelite.com), who was taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary reasons. “I think I showed what I am about: tough and gritty. This is very important for me to win and prove to myself that I am one of the best middle weights in the world.”

Fukuda (8-3), a lefthander from Japan, landed his fair share of kicks and fists, but fell short.

“I can’t argue with the decision,’’ said Fukuda (rikifukuda.proelite.com). “I don’t know if I was nervous with this being the first major fight I’ve had in the United States, but I won’t make any excuses. I could have pressured him more. I would love to fight him again.”

In the opening bout of the SHOWTIME telecast, Shields (19-4-1), of San Francisco, made surprisingly quick work of Verissimo (8-5). The referee stopped the fight at 4:00 with Shields on top of Verissimo and landing a series of unanswered punches. Shields is unbeaten since December 2004.

“I was hoping to win in the first round, but in a way I wanted it to go a little longer. I am happy, but never satisfied,” Shields (jakeshields.proelite.com) said. “If Frank Trigg wants to fight me at a catch weight I will be happy to fight him next. If not, I feel I deserve a shot at the title. I have scored two dominate wins now in a row.”

Said Charuto (renatoverissimo.proelite.com): “I can’t believe it. He got me in a mount. I tried to get out of it but couldn’t. This is disappointing. Everything was fine until he took me down. I have no one to blame but myself.”

EliteXC announcer Mauro Ranallo called the “Uprising” play-by-play with world wrestling star Bill Goldberg and Stephen Quadros, The Fight Professor, serving as color analysts. The executive producer of the telecast was David Dinkins, Jr. with Bob Dunphy directing.

Following the SHOWTIME telecast, five undercard fights were streamed live on the Internet on the premier mixed martial arts social networking and entertainment site, ProElite.com, In scheduled three, 3-minute round fights: Kala Kolohe Hose (4-1) scored a 20-second, first-round TKO over Jeff “Pee Wee’’ Fox (1-0-1) at 195 pounds; Mark Kurano (1-0) won by first-round submission over Jose “The Bomber” Diaz (1-1); Mark Oshiro (9-1) won by first-round submission (rear-naked choke) over Nui Wheeler (2-0) at 135 pounds; Brandon Wolff (6-2) won a decision over Chad Klingensmith (4-1) and Tyson Nam (4-1) won a four-round decision over Albert “Always Bad’’ Manners (7-7).

In results of fights not shown on SHOWTIME or ProElite.com, Justin Buchholz (7-1) rallied from a knockdown to register an exciting TKO over Ikaika Choy-Pu (1-2), and Chico Cantiberos (3-3) scored a first round submission vs. Elias Delosryes (1-1).

With the exciting triumph, Buchholz earned a spot on the Oct. 26 ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series on SHOWTIME.
“What Gary Shaw said came as an absolute total surprise. I was supposed to go right back to work after this fight. I work as an oil refinery laborer in Alaska. Now I am not sure how I am going to handle everything, but I am definitely fighting on October 26.”

NO HOLDS BARRED: Mark Cuban, Erik Paulson, Jeff Ford, HDNet Fights, Boxing's Fall Feast

9-16-2007

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2007-09-15T14_47_02-07_00

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the venture of a new entrant into the world of mixed martial arts, the HDNet Fights (http://www.hdnetfights.com/) series being initiated by Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA. Their first scheduled show is Saturday, October 13, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

We first offer some advice for this new enterprise about how to position it as a sport and not a spectacle. We also spoke with Mark Cuban on a media teleconference call to get his thoughts on his new role as both a promoter and a broadcaster of mixed martial arts.

The main event on that show will feature the return to MMA action by Erik Paulson for the first time in seven years. He will face another veteran, Jeff Ford, who has been a kickboxing champion and a heavyweight pro boxer as well as a mixed martial arts fighter. We also spoke with both fighters on this media teleconference call.

Also, we provide a glimpse at what should be a stellar, action-packed, and important final four months of 2007 for the sport of boxing. This schedule is absolutely loaded with intriguing, major fights, including: Jermain Taylor vs. Kelly Pavlik (Sept. 29), Manny Pacquiao vs. Marco Antonio Barrera 2 (Oct. 6), Oleg Maskaev vs. Samuel Peter (also Oct. 6), Juan Diaz vs. Julio Diaz (Oct. 13), Sultan Ibragimov vs. Evander Holyfield, (also Oct. 13), Chris Byrd vs. Alexander Povetkin (Oct. 27), Joe Calzaghe vs. Mikkel Kessler (Nov. 3), Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Rocky Juarez (also Nov. 3), Miguel Cotto vs. Shane Mosley (Nov. 10), Jean-Marc Mormeck vs. David Haye (also Nov. 10), Joan Guzman vs. Humberto Soto (Nov. 17), Floyd Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton (Dec. 8), and more. We discuss what we are calling "Boxing's Fall Feast" in a segment which was originally on SecondsOut Radio.

Also, make sure to check out my weekly boxing show, SecondsOut Radio. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by previewing the megafight between the undefeated WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KOs) and the undefeated WBC/WBA champion Mikkel Kessler (39-0, 29 KOs). This long-awaited title unification fight will take place November 3 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, near Calzaghe's home. We spoke with both champions, Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler, at a New York news conference this past week to get their takes on what to expect in this fight. On September 1, WBO 140-pound champion Ricardo Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) defended his title with a highly controversial 11th-round TKO win over Kendall Holt (22-2, 12 KOs). This fight took place at the Salon Jumbo del Country Club in Barranquilla, Colombia, Torres's home country. Subsequent reports questioned many aspects of the conduct of this fight, including the stoppage, interference from fans and others during the fight, and more. Videos of both the final round and the entire fight have appeared online, with many who have seen them, along with those in attendance, agreeing that justice was not done that night. We got a chance to speak with Kendall Holt about all this when he attended the Calzaghe-Kessler news conference, and we have that interview for you this week. Also, as many already know, the scheduled September 15 fight between WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez has been cancelled. The reported reason is that Marquez suffered a cut on his right hand which led to an infection and swelling, thus leading to the fight's cancellation. We discuss this situation this week.

HIGH COUNTRY HARLEY presents RING OF FIRE 30: DOMINATION - Tonight!

9-15-2007

Broomfield, CO

ROF 30: DOMINATION. The 11 bout MMA event will takes place tonight, Saturday, September 15th 2007 at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

UFC, K-1 and Strikeforce veteran, Duane BANG! Ludwig headlines a talent packed fight card. The card will have International appeal with fighters coming from 3 countries including multiple UFC veterans.

"As always, there are some last minute changes. But after seven years in the industry I now expect it to happen. This a sport where the demands on the athletes are very high, especially in training. These guys (and girls) are breaking their bodies down daily and injuries are bound to happen." said Bean. Most notably in the main event, Serbian boxer Dragan Bakula broke his hand in training. Wanting to keep the ROF USA vs. ROF Europe theme intact, Bean went on a search for a qualified replacement. German fighter Mario Stapel was contacted and immediately agreed to take the opportunity.

ROF Light Heavyweight Champion Eliot Marshall was slated to face UFC veteran Rob MAXIMUS MacDonald in his first title defense. However, Marshall was the victim of a severe staph infection to his knee. The infection was so bad that his knee grew to the size of a grapefruit and doctor's had no choice but to deem him unfit to participate. "It's really depressing. Training was going great. I was looking forward to fighting Rob and defend my belt." said Marshall. MacDonald will still make the trip from Canada to attend the show as plans are being made for this match to happen on the next ROF event.

Main Event: ROF USA vs. ROF Europe
Last year ROF opened it's European branch in Belgrade, Serbia. The inaugural event was a huge success and was covered
