SPIKE TV - Ultimate Fight Night 11

8-1-2007

Denver, CO

For The Ultimate Fighter® alumni Din Thomas (Season 4), Nate Diaz (Season 5 champ) Chris Leben (Season 1) and Mike Swick (Season 1), the Ultimate® Fight Night™ on Spike TV Wednesday, September 19 at 9:00pm ET/PT will provide a golden opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a nationally televised audience. Each fighter is facing a tough test with the winners moving up the UFC® ranks and another step closer to a title shot. The two-hour live fight card will take place live from The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV.

Din Thomas (23-7) may have gained national recognition on Season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter last year, but the 30 year-old fighter was already well-known to mixed martial arts fans with a resume including an impressive win over current welterweight champ Matt Serra at UFC 41 in 2003. Now, the American Top Team product out of Port St. Lucie, Fl. looks to ascend the lightweight ranks against Spencer “The King” Fisher (21-3). The 31 year-old Team Miletich fighter from Bettendorf, Iowa earned national acclaim when he won a hard-fought decision over Canadian Sam Stout on Spike TV in June. With three wins in his last four UFC fights, “The King” is inching closer for a shot at the UFC lightweight throne.

A bold personality from Season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter, Chris “The Crippler” Leben (16-4), was a rising star in the UFC with five straight victories until his career was sidetracked by a devastating stoppage at the hands of current middleweight king, Anderson Silva, last June. Leben, fighting out of Gresham, Ore., has lost two of his last three bouts, and is desperate for a win against Chicago’s Terry Martin (18-2). The 26-year-old Martin, working toward a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, is on a two-fight winning streak in the UFC including a first round TKO over Ivan Salaverry at UFC 71 in May.

The Ultimate Fighter 5 champ Nate Diaz (6-2) gets his first big opportunity as a UFC fighter against the tough Atlanta-based Junior Assuncao (6-2). Diaz was awarded a six-figure multi-fight deal with the UFC when he defeated Manny Gamburyan in the second round of their nationally-televised bout in June. Diaz will look to use his impressive array of submission skills against the hard-charging Assuncao.

Mike Swick (10-2) was on the fast track to a UFC title shot with a five-fight winning streak since appearing on The Ultimate Fighter 1 with wins over vets David Loiseau and Joe Riggs. However, the talented 28-year-old fighting out of San Jose, Calif. lost a decision in a three-round war to Yushin Okami at UFC 69 in April. Now he is dropping down to welterweight to fight Canadian Jonathan “The Road Warrior” Goulet (19-8), who trains with UFC star Georges St-Pierre, and is making his fifth appearance on a Spike TV fight card.

The undercard will also feature prominent The Ultimate Fighter alumni as Gray Maynard (Season 5) takes on Joe Veres, Cole Miller (Season 5) battles Leonard Garcia, and Pete “Drago” Sell (Season 4) takes on Nate Quarry (Season 4).

IFL Grand Prix Tournament - Line Up

7-26-2007

Denver, CO

The International Fight League (OTC.BB: IFLI) today announced the dates, venues and rosters for the 2007 IFL World Grand Prix, the individual all-star competition for the world’s number one mixed martial arts league. The semifinals will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Sears Centre in Chicago and the finals will take place on Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., sites of two of the league’s most successful team events in 2007.

The tournament will feature the top four athletes from the IFL regular season in each of five weight categories. The winner from each weight class will be crowned a world Grand Prix champion, rewarding their great individual athletic accomplishment in team-based MMA.

Tickets for the IFL World Grand Prix semifinals will go on sale on Saturday, August 4. Tickets can be purchased at the Sears Centre box office, by calling 1-888-SEARSTIX, or online at www.ifl.tv. Tickets for the Finals at Mohegan Sun will go on sale to the general public on Friday, August 17, at 10 a.m. ET. Tickets can be purchased at the Mohegan Sun box office, online at www.Ticketmaster.com, or by calling Ticketmaster at 1-860-886-0070.

Among the stars scheduled to compete are Silverbacks’ heavyweight Ben Rothwell (Milwaukee, Wis.), Anacondas teen sensation lightweight Chris Horodecki (London, Ontario), Sabres’ light heavyweight standout Vladimir Matyushenko (Belarus) and Anacondas’ unbeaten middleweight Benji Radach (Coconut Creek, Fla.). Among the highly-anticipated matchups are rematches between Rothwell and Roy Nelson (Las Vegas) of the Lions and between Horodecki and Bart Palaszewski (Wonder Lake, Ill.) of the Silverbacks. Additionally, Wagnney Fabiano (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), unbeaten and the only IFL athlete with three first-round wins, takes on John Gunderson (Medford, Ore.) in the deep lightweight division.

“The World Grand Prix provides an additional stage for our top athletes at every weight class,” said IFL Commissioner and Co-Founder Kurt Otto. “In addition to striving for the team championship, the best of the best have the opportunity to compete for an individual championship belt, which will give fans the chance to see great matchups between the IFL’s rising stars.

“The fact that every team has at least one qualifier for the World Grand Prix also speaks to the quality and depth of our teams across the board.”

The unbeaten Los Angeles Anacondas have the most qualified athletes with four. The Quad Cities Silverbacks are next with three, while the Toronto Dragons, Nevada Lions and Tokyo Sabres have two each and the remaining seven teams have one apiece. All 20 competitors (four at each weight class) will take to the ring in the semifinals in Chicago. The winners will advance to the finals at Mohegan Sun, which will also include a series of Superfights to round out the card. In the event of injury prior to the competition, the fifth seed (alternate) will fill the vacated spot.

IFL team competition reaches its pinnacle over the next six weeks, as the 2007 IFL World Championship semifinals are set for Thursday, August 2, at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J., with the finals set for Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Fla.

Athletes were selected for the World Grand Prix based on their respective match records during the 2007 regular season. In the event of a tie, competitors with the fastest finishes or best strength of victories earned the higher seeds. The winners then defend their individual belts throughout the 2008 IFL season (dates and locations TBA).

The full rosters for the World Grand Prix Semifinals follow. Bout order will be determined prior to the Official Weigh-in on November 2.

K.J. NOONS WANTS TO BECOME FIRST FIGHTER TO HOLD MMA AND BOXING BELTS

7-26-2007

Denver, CO

He Faces Stiff MMA Test Against Edson Berto In Main Event; Premiere Telecast of ShoXC Airs Live This Friday on SHOWTIME

After suffering a shocking defeat to “Krazy Horse’’ Charles Bennett in the first-ever Mixed Martial Arts fight shown on premium television (SHOWTIME), K.J. Noons, of San Diego, Calif., was determined to return to action as quickly as possible.

When Noons came back, four months later, however, it was not in a cage or a hexagon. It was in a ring – a boxing ring.

Talk about a true fighter.

A May Thai specialist, Noons is a highly regarded up-and-comer in MMA with a 3-1 record. He has won numerous awards during his career, including nominations as Pride Fighting Championships Best Striker and is a former ISKA and Art of War champion.

But Noons also is a promising prizefighter with a record of 7-1 with five knockouts.

“I just alternate back and forth between boxing and MMA when I train,” he said. “It’s definitely tough. You have to work out twice as hard and twice as much. But this is what I want to do. I want to stay in both and be busy in both for as long as I can, and it is way too early to give up on either.

“My ultimate goal is to win championship belts in MMA and boxing.’’

This Friday, July 27, Noons will make network history again when he faces streaking Edson “Little Tiger’’ Berto of Winter Haven, Fla., in the first-ever edition of ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series on SHOWTIME (live at 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

The Noons-Berto fight is scheduled for three, 5-minute rounds.

In the co-feature of an exciting two-hour telecast that will feature up to five bouts at Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif., Aaron Wetherspoon of Irvine, Calif., will face local favorite Jeremiah Metcalf of Santa Ynez in a King of the Cage/Gladiator Challenge welterweight championship unification match (five, 5-minute rounds).

“I think this new ShoXC series is just great,” Noons said. “It is just like ShoBox except instead of young boxers it will focus on young talent in MMA. It gives guys like me a chance to showcase their skills on national television and get a little time to spend in the limelight.’’

Like its boxing predecessor, ShoBox, the mission of the ShoXC series is to pit young fighters against quality opposition in tough, crowd-pleasing and competitive matches.

SHOXC: ELITE CHALLENGER SERIES – JULY 27, 2007

For sure, Noons has been matched extremely tough in his return to the MMA cage in the 155-pound fight.

The always well-conditioned Berto has won 11 consecutive ultimate fighting competition fights. He won 10 in a row in Real Fighting Combat (RFC), including a title victory at 155 pounds in 2006.

In his last start, the older brother of undefeated welterweight boxer Andre Berto scored a shocking 47-second, first-round submission victory over Victor “Joe Boxer’’ Valenzuela on the undercard of “Shamrock Vs. Baroni” on June 22, 2007, in San Jose, Calif. on SHOWTIME® PPV.

Berto, who came in on a few days' notice as a late replacement for the incarcerated Bennett, submitted Valenzuela with a perfectly executed heel hook.

“Berto has a great all-around game and is on a roll,” Noons said. “This will not be any easy fight by any means. It is a perfect ShoXC fight between two young guys. I know I will have to be at my best to beat him.’’

Noons’ fight with “Krazy Horse” on Feb. 10, 2007, on SHOWTIME ended in devastating and sudden fashion. During one of many exchanges early in the fight, a “Krazy Horse” right hook landed squarely on Noons’ chin. Noons went down and “Krazy Horse’’ pounced on him, prompting the referee to stop the bout.

“I was really disappointed and discouraged for a while, but mostly I was just mad at myself,” Noons said. “I don’t make excuses. ‘Krazy’ definitely caught me with a good shot.

“But I was too hesitant in there. Then, I made an even bigger mistake. I got caught up with the crowd, who I could tell were anxious for more action. So I tried to make something happen. Instead, I got caught.

“Every fighter loses, but it is what they do after a loss that counts. A loss like I had definitely challenges a fighter’s character. Do they get back up on their feet and get on the right track? Do they use it as a learning experience, or do they mope around?

“The good thing about MMA as opposed to boxing is that one loss doesn’t destroy you. In MMA, you can be a .500 fighter and still be a threat.’’

Noons’ last pro boxing start came on June 1, 2007, at Chumash. He registered a lopsided six-round decision, winning all the rounds on all the scorecards.

“I was really happy to get that fight out of the way,’’ said Noons, who will become the first fighter to participate in both a boxing and MMA match at Chumash. “Usually before a fight I am calm, but I was a little jittery before that one. But I concentrated on keeping my hands held high so I wouldn’t get caught and after a few rounds I was fine.’’

ShoXC will air regularly on Saturday nights -- following the Friday premiere -- and will feature fighters from all over the world. In the debut episode, matches will take place in a 20’ x 22’ foot hexagon cage. MMA fights on other ShoXC telecasts may take place in a cage or a ring.

In other fights on the ShoXC debut card on Friday, Jefferson “Tank’’ Silva (3-1) faces Aaron Rosa (8-0) in a 170-pound match (three, 5-minute rounds); Chris David (8-5-1) meets Scott Jorgenson (3-1) in a 135-pound bout (three, 5-minute rounds) and Muhsin Corbbrey (4-2) opposes Lee Gibson (10-2) in a 155-round contest (three, 5-minute rounds).

Up to six additional fights on Friday will be streamed live on the Internet (www.ProElite.com) immediately following the telecast.

TAPOUT - Kicking Ass And Making Names

7-24-2007

Denver, CO

The TapOut Crew Continues Their Search To Find The Next MMA SuperStar Wednesday, August 1, At 10 P.M. ET/PT Only On VERSUS

From the producers of American Chopper and Dirty Jobs, the VERSUS original series TapouT follows Mask, Punkass and Skyskrape-the crew behind the premier mixed martial arts clothing and gear line TapouT-on their cross country travels in search of the next MMA superstar. After a great series debut in June- which included three episodes and saw a 140 percent increase in household impressions for the time period average-all new episodes featuring the bad boys of MMA will premiere on VERSUS Wednesdays beginning August 1** at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Traveling around the country in a tricked out tour bus, the crew is on the hunt to discover a fighter who has what it takes to represent the TapouT label; and before these up and comers fight their way out of the cage, they have to fight to their way in with the TapouT crew. The crew bonds with their fighter testing out his personality, and in between the usual TapouT mayhem makes sure their new protégé gets the proper training before the big fight. In each episode, it's all on the line in the dramatic conclusion as each fighter gets one shot to impress the crew and show off his skills in the cage.

"With this original reality series and our live World Extreme Cagefighting events, we are closer to our goal of becoming a top destination for the best mixed martial arts programming on television," said Marc Fein, Senior Vice President of Programming and Production for VERSUS. "The uncompromising quality of our fights and original productions is what differentiates VERSUS from other networks."

The TapouT brand is Mask's-"The General" of the crew-creation. His 'inyaface' attitude and no-nonsense approach are the basis of the TapouT world and a favorite of fans. Whether it's prepping fighters or meeting fans, Mask is one of the most recognizable personalities in the combat sports world from the Las Vegas strip to the streets of New York City. Punk Ass is the strong, silent type with the entrepreneurial mind-he's all business, all the time. He's the tough guy in any neighborhood he decides to make his own. Skyskrape is the clown of the crew and is always decked out in outrageous wigs, costumes and sarcasm and he gets the crowd energized and pumped for every event.

"In mainstream clothing and television, TapouT is completely new on the scene. It's the new guy against the big Greats. There is something about the new guy that believes he's meant to do GREAT things!" Character and TapouT creator Mask believes in the solid partnership with VERSUS.

Schedule and descriptions for new episodes to follow. All times are 10 p.m. ET/PT, subject to change:

August 1: The Search Continues TapouT scouts several talented fighters on a cross-country trip looking for new talent. They stop in at Matt Hughes' farm before heading out to the Ring of Fire, a mixed martial arts event in Colorado.

Sefo Battles Bregy In Las Vegas K-1 Superfight

7-23-2007

Denver, CO

By Mike Afromowitz

Hard-hitting K-1 superstar and four-time world kickboxing champion, Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (61-15-1 (49 KO’s), will take on 2006 K-1 Amsterdam tournament champion, Bjorn Bregy (14-7 (7 KO’s), in a classic K-1 Superfight matchup at Las Vegas, Nevada’s Bellagio on Saturday, August 11th.

Sefo’s start on the “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas” mega-fight card is slated to be the 36-year-old New Zealand native’s toughest challenge to date in Las Vegas K-1 action. At 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighing in at approximately 275 pounds, Bregy, a 32-year-old Karate stylist from Switzerland, brings to the table a tremendous size advantage over his opponent, who stands an even 6 feet tall and weighs around 235 pounds.

Last August, Sefo, in his second career appearance in Sin City, faced another Swiss fighter, Azem Maksutaj, in a featured Superfight. From start to finish, Sefo controlled the tempo of the bout, flooring the tenacious Muay Thai stylist a total of five times over the course of three rounds. The fifth knockdown, produced by a sharp Sefo spinning back kick, prompted the referee to stop the bout, giving Sefo the victory by way of technical knockout at the 2:02 mark of the third stanza.

Sefo, a distinguished K-1 competitor for over a decade, reaffirmed his elite status last year by defeating two of the organization’s hottest prospects. In Seoul, Korea last June, it took him less than two minutes to put the lightning quick Ruslan Karaev down for the 10 count with a stunning right hook. During K-1’s annual December finale at Japan’s Tokyo Dome, Sefo schooled the highly-touted Melvin Manhoef, stopping the Dutch heavyweight with a pair of right hands only 40 seconds into their meeting.

A K-1 competitor since 2000, Bregy initiated the best performance of his career by using his hands and long knees to stop Frenchman Freddy Kemayo in the quarterfinal tournament round of the single-elimination affair in Amsterdam on May 13th of last year. In a semifinal round matchup with another French combatant, Naoufal “Iron Leg,” the Swiss fighter did likewise, putting his opponent down for the 10 count with a hard knee strike to the midsection in the second round of battle. Bregy brought the tournament’s championship bout to a close in even more abrupt fashion by putting Holland’s Gokhan Saki flat on the canvas with a left hook to the jaw at the 1:44 mark of the fight’s first round.

Bregy’s conquest of the Amsterdam affair came in the midst of his spectacular seven-fight win streak that spanned from May 20, 2005 through July 30th of last year when, in front of 8,300 fans, he obliterated Japanese contender and fellow Karate player, Tsuyoshi Nakasako, in the opening stanza of a meeting in Sapporo Hokkaido, Japan.

In a second “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas” Superfight matchup, two-time K-1 tournament champion and fearsome knockout artist, “Mighty Mo” Siligia (32-5 (26 KO’s), will square off with last April’s K-1 North America tournament victor, Chalid “Die Faust” Arrab (16-6 (3 KO’s).

The “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas” card will be headlined by K-1’s customary, single-elimination tournament. Representing The United States in the eight-man draw will be undefeated four-time kickboxing champion and former Airforce and Armed Services heavyweight boxing champion, “Savage” Rick Cheek (19-0 (17 KO’s) (1 No Contest), as well as Muay Thai specialists Patrick Barry (14-3-1 (8 KO’s) and Esh’Chadar “The Dispossessor” Brown Ton (6-1 (3 KO’s).

Barry is slated to face Sweden’s Rickard Nordstrand (16-6 (3 KO’s) in the tournament’s quarterfinal round while, in the same bracket of the draw, Brown Ton is scheduled to square off with 23-year-old speed demon, Zabit Samedov (50-5 (26 KO’s), of Belarus.

Cheek’s quarterfinal round opponent has yet to be named. The other quarterfinal round matchup in Cheek’s bracket will see Russia’s Alexandre Pitchkounov (6-1-1 (3 KO’s) take on Japanese Karate stylist, Tsuyoshi Nakasako (18-24-1 (5 KO’s).

Tickets for “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas,” priced at $300, $200, $100, and $50, are on sale at Bellagio’s box office (888-488-7111) and on www.k-1usa.net, the official website of K-1 North America.

Bellagio Ballroom doors will open for “K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 in Las Vegas” at 5 PM Pacific Standard Time on Saturday, August 11th and the card’s first preliminary bout will begin at 5:30 PM. The eight-man tournament will commence at 7 PM.

K-1 is a martial arts fighting sport that derives its name from its inclusion of a wide array of combat disciplines including Karate, Kung-Fu and Kickboxing ("K"), with an intent to determine one champion in one ring ("1"). After being staged for the first time in Japan in 1993 under the direction of founder Master Kazuyoshi Ishii, K-1 has evolved into the country's most popular sport and has achieved popular culture status as its athletes are larger-than-life celebrities.

After that fight, Gatti announced his retirement. We also spoke with IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (28-1, 26 KOs), who scored an impressive second-round knockout of challenger Walter Matthysse (26-2, 25 KOs, 1 NC) that kept the Atlantic City crowd buzzing for many minutes afterwards. We spoke with Emanuel Steward, who trains Cintron. And we spoke with legendary trainer Angelo Dundee, who was in attendance at this card, about the state of boxing, as well as IBF 140-pound champion Paulie Malignaggi and super middleweight prospect Jerson Ravelo, who both also attended this event.

ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series

7-20-2007

Denver, CO

Showtime Networks Inc. and mixed martial arts organization EliteXC officially announced today the debut of a new series on the premium television network, ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series. The series will premiere live on Friday, July 27 at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast), from Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez , Calif.

Following the successful model of the network’s critically acclaimed, prospect-oriented boxing series ShoBox: The New Generation, ShoXC will put talented, up-and-coming fighters on the fast track to stardom. The mission of the series is to pit young fighters against quality opposition in tough, crowd-pleasing and competitive matches.

“This network and our partners at EliteXC have made a long-term commitment to developing the sport of professional mixed martial arts,” said Ken Hershman, senior vice president and general manager, Showtime Sports & Event Programming. “ShoXC is one of the most important components to that development. Now, young fighters will have an elite proving ground to showcase their talents on national television. In addition, the fans now can track MMA’s future stars as they develop their fighting style and skills.”

ShoXC will air regularly on Saturday nights—following the Friday premiere—and will feature fighters from all over the world. In the debut episode, matches will take place in a 20’ x 22’ foot hexagon cage. MMA fights on other ShoXC telecasts may take place in a cage or a ring.

“‘ShoBox’ is a truly unique, one-of-a-kind series for the true boxing fan,” added Hershman. “’ShoBox’ has introduced fans to many of today’s top fighters, including more than 15 current world champions. We expect the same kind of success stories to come out of ShoXC.”

Gary Shaw, EliteXC President, Live Events said, “I believe that ShoXC will be as popular and important to the MMA audience as ShoBox is to boxing.’’

The initial two-hour ShoXC telecast will feature up to five fights with Edson Berto of Orlando , Fla. , facing K.J. Noons of San Diego (155-pound match) in the main event. Also on the card, Aaron Wetherspoon of Irvine , Calif. , will meet hometown champion Jeremiah Metcalf of Santa Ynez in a King of the Cage/Gladiator Challenge welterweight championship unification match.

And, as is the precedent for EliteXC, additional fights will be streamed live on the Internet (www.ProElite.com) immediately following the telecast.

EliteXC announcer Mauro Ranallo will handle play-by-play for ShoXC with highly regarded color analyst Stephen Quadros, The Fight Professor, at his side. The executive producer of ShoXC is David Dinkins, Jr. with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

UFC 75 To be Broadcast on Spike TV via Tape Delay

7-17-2007, Denver, CO

Event date: Saturday, September 8 at 9:00 PM ET/PT

O2 Arena, London England

SpikeT V will telecast “UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion,” its most star-studded fight card ever, including the network’s first-ever UFC® title fight, a unification bout between UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and PRIDE’s 205-pound Champion Dan “Hollywood” Henderson, on Saturday, September 8 at 9:00 PM ET/PT (same day tape) from The O2 Arena in London, England. UFC 75 also features a major heavyweight battle with international superstar Mirko “Cro Cop” when he takes on France’s Cheick Kongo. As a special feature, England’s own and “The Ultimate Fighter® 3” Light Heavyweight Champion Michael “The Count” Bisping takes on fellow “The Ultimate Fighter 3” cast member Matt “The Hammer” Hamill.

“We are pleased that Spike TV will bring UFC 75 live from London to millions of UFC fans in the U.S. and Canada,” said Dana White, UFC President. “UFC 75 will be the UFC and PRIDE’s first ever unification match – this fight between Rampage Jackson and Dan Henderson will decide who is the best 205-pound fighter in the two organizations. This is the mega-fight that sports fans have always wanted, and after waiting almost a decade not only do they finally get it, they get to watch it for free on Spike TV.”

“Spike TV is thrilled to present such a monumental bout between these two great champions, said Kevin Kay, General Manager, Spike TV. “Not only will this be the first ever unification bout but it is Spike TV’s first ever UFC title fight.”

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is coming off a thrilling victory over Chuck Liddell. Knocking out “The Iceman” less than two minutes into the first round of their fight at UFC 71 in May to capture the light heavyweight crown, Jackson stopped a streak of four consecutive title defenses by Liddell. The 29-year-old has been a rising star in mixed martial arts since his 2001debut with the PRIDE Fighting organization (recently acquired by UFC ownership) he defeated many of the world’s best fighters, including a previous victory over Liddell in 2003. Jackson will put his new UFC title on the line against Henderson, the pound-for-pound superstar who holds two titles in PRIDE.

Henderson currently holds PRIDE’s 205 pound and 185 pound title. He is the only the only fighter in MMA history to hold two titles in two weight classes concurrently in a major fight organization. He enters his fight with Jackson after a stunning knockout victory over Wanderlei Silva last February, which was compelling since Silva had beaten Jackson twice before. Having represented the United States in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling, Henderson will look to impose his wrestling ability during his bout with Jackson in an attempt to make history again, this time by becoming the first fighter ever to hold both the UFC and PRIDE titles.

Mirko “Cro Cop” returns to the Octagon™ following his first UFC loss to Brazil’s Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 70 in Manchester, England. The fearsome kickboxer turned mixed martial artist was the 2006 PRIDE Open Weight Grand Prix Champion and was expected by many to defeat Gonzaga en route to a mega-fight with Randy Couture for the heavyweight title at UFC 74 in August. Instead, Gonzaga turned the tables on “Cro Cop” and caught him with a right leg kick to the head, sending him to the canvas in a stunning upset nine seconds before the end of the first round. “Cro Cop” now goes back to England in an attempt to defeat Kongo and start a new reign of terror in the heavyweight division.

Kongo, like Cro Cop, is a kickboxer turned mixed martial artist. Not much was known of the 6’4” 240-pound Parisian when he made his UFC 61 debut in July of 2006 against Gilbert Aldana. He had an impressive record and a stellar reputation as a kickboxer, but many wondered if he could compete in the MMA arena. He answered that question quickly as he halted the rugged Aldana in the first round. Kongo then jumped back and scored another first round stoppage at UFC 62, this one over Christian Wellisch. At UFC 70, Kongo triumphed with a majority decision over popular Brazilian heavyweight Assuerio Silva, scoring his third win in the UFC.

In other undercard action, light heavyweights Michael Bisping and Matt Hamill will each be putting their undefeated records on the line in a match-up that most expected to see on “The Ultimate Fighter 3” before Hamill was forced to withdraw from the competition due to injury. Fighting out of Widnes, England, Bisping, winner of The Ultimate Fighter 3 in the light heavyweight division, comes into the bout off wins over Eric Schafer and Elvis Sinosic at UFC 66 and UFC 70 respectively.

“The Hammer” trains with Tito Ortiz and Team Punishment in Southern California, and most recently defeated Rex Holman at UFC 68. Hamill is a 2004 inductee in the Division III Wrestling Hall of Fame was the first U.S. wrestler to win gold medals in freestyle and Greco Roman competition in the 1997 World Games for the Deaf. The three-time NCAA National Champion attended the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester.

More details on the event to be announced shortly.

Royce Gracie will not appeal California State Athletic Commission Steroids Sentence - Gracie tested positive for steroids following his victory over Kazushi Sakuraba at the June 2nd, K1 Dynamite USA event and was suspended for one year and fined $2,500.00.  He issued the following statement regarding the appeals process.

"I did not appeal the decision because I have been in Spain for the last 1 ½ months on vacation with my family, and for me to appeal, I would have to get a lawyer, and then get some experts to run tests and then get more experts to argue with their experts, or I can just pay $2500 fine, and sit out for one year. Well, I fight once a year anyway and it's much cheaper to pay $2500 in fine then $10,000 retainer to attorneys alone. As for my fans, those who believe me, believe me anyway, and those who don't, does not matter what I do, or what I say, they will not believe anyway."     R. G.

IFL - Intense Pitbulls-Dragons Showdown on FSN Tonight
7-13-2007

Denver, CO
By Ben Fowlkes

Tonight’s edition of IFL Fight Night on Fox Sports Net features a heated showdown between Renzo Gracie’s New York Pitbulls and Carlos Newton’s Toronto Dragons. With both teams fighting for their playoff lives in the final IFL event of the 2007 regular season, they’ll have to lay it all on the line in Las Vegas.

Witness the newest member of the Pitbulls, jiu-jitsu champion Marcio “Pe de Pano” Cruz put his skills to the test against heavyweight slugger Rafael Feijao in a critical match. Cruz comes in as a late substitution and has the pressure of his team’s entire season riding on his back.

Also, see welterweight phenom Delson Heleno take on former UFC fighter Gideon Ray in a match that pits two of the league’s most athletically gifted competitors against one another. In the middleweight class, Canadian Brent Beauparlant looks to continue his steady improvement against the always-entertaining Fabio Leopoldo.

The lightweights are also in action, as slick submissions expert Wagnney Fabiano faces a Erik Owings. Fabiano has yet to meet an opponent who can handle his ground game, but will Gracie student Owings give him his first real test in the IFL? To top it all off, light heavyweights Andre Gusmao and Wojtek Kaszowski go at it, with both men desperately needing a win to bolster their IFL records.

It’s all tonight on Fox Sports Net, starting at 11 pm in most areas. Check our TV Schedule page for complete details and air times. And don’t forget to watch an all-new episode of IFL Battleground on MyNetworkTV this Monday night.

DALLAS, TX -- (MARKET WIRE) – SUN Sports & Entertainment Inc., announced today that the Company is launching a new division called “UNDERGROUND Cage Fighting ™” designed for Casinos, Arenas and regional markets interested in showcasing this new sport and the new breed of fighters across in the Country.

The UNDERGROUND Events are produced exclusively by SUN and offer a full turnkey Mobile Production that starts at $100,000 (based on fight card). The specialized model could allow SUN the ability to produce up to one Event per week on a national basis across America. The Company has received dozen’s of inquires for its UNDERGROUND Events and has already signed two contracts to produce an Event in August 2007 and another Event in November 2007.

The growth of MMA and the demand for more of this type of live entertainment should prove to be a very successful financial model for SUN.” Epstein added, “We feel there is a huge market opportunity in the 1000 - 5000 seat venues to bring a professional show to their facility and have subsequently created a very unique marketing and production plan specifically for this.”

The Company will unveil its first multi city tour in a series of Events in Texas as early as September 2007 and will begin producing a national program thereafter. Epstein says ‘This program will allow the new generation of young fighters to build a track record and get exposure before they are considered to be associated with the Men’s National MMA Team. It’s our plan promote many of these UNDERGROUND events which provides the estimated 300 million fans (source: Guy Adams a Reporter with Independent News & Media) around the globe a chance to witness live or on Pay Per View the energy of what happens when two skilled athletes mixed martial arts are placed in a 24 foot steel cage!
