WRESTLING NEWS - One Month Out from World Team Trials

5-10-2007

Denver, CO

In exactly one month, the nation’s best Olympic-level wrestlers will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the United States Marine Corps U.S. World Team Trials at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

For two days, June 9-10, the top Olympic hopefuls in men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle will compete for coveted spots on the 2007 U.S. World Team. In addition, Grappling, the new international wrestling style, will host its first World Team Trials on the mats at the Convention Center.

“The World Team Trials is the most important domestic event held annually, which determines who will represent the United States as the most important international event every year, the World Championships,” said Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director. “We are excited to bring the event to Las Vegas, which has long been a strong supporter of wrestling. There is still time for people to make plans to join us for this great event.”

“We are one month away from hosting one of the most prestigious wrestling competitions – the 2007 United States Marine Corps U.S. World Team Trials,” said Pat Christenson, president of Las Vegas Events. “Not only is it exciting, but it is an honor to host the world’s best wrestlers in Las Vegas for such a prominent event. We are confident that the athletes, coaches, officials and fans will have a memorable experience in Las Vegas, the most exciting city in the world.”

The field has been set in the three Olympic styles of wrestling for the United States Marine Corps U.S. World Team Trials, as the final qualifying event was completed this past weekend.

The United States Marine Corps U.S. World Team Trials will have the same format and will feature the same field of athletes who are expected to compete at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling, also set for Las Vegas in June of 2008. This format provides one of the most popular spectator events in wrestling, where athletes compete with great intensity to reach a lifelong goal of representing the United States in World or Olympic competition.

There are expected to be seven World or Olympic champions in the field, as well as 21 past World medalists competing in the Olympic styles at the World Team Trials.

Tickets remain available and can be purchased in three ways. There will be an All-Event price, which covers every session during the two days of action. There is a single-day All-Session price, for fans to attend every session on a specific day. There is also a Single Session ticket price. There are three seat location options, Gold, Silver and Bronze, with the Gold seats considered the most desirable.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 866-388-FANS or online at:

DYNAMITE USA - Royce Gracie vs. Kasuzshi Sakuraba
5-9-2007, Denver, CO

Event date: June 2, 2007

Los Angeles Coliseum

Los Angeles, CA

MMA legends Royce Gracie and Kasuzshi Sakuraba, who fought an exhausting 90-minute battle seven years ago, will meet once again, this time as the co-main event at “Softbank presents Dynamite!! USA in association with ProElite” in the Los Angeles Coliseum on June 2 (live SHOWTIME® PPV, 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT).

Gracie (roycegracie.proelite.com), considered the godfather of modern-day mixed martial arts, will face the imposing Sakuraba (sakuraba.proelite.com), nicknamed “The Gracie Hunter” for his well-documented victories over four members of the Gracie family, including the dramatic victory over Royce in 2000.

The rematch will be part of an extraordinary main fight card that includes 7-foot-2 South Korean Hong Man Choi, former WWE champ Brock Lesnar, NFL star Johnnie Morton, Ray Sefo (New Zealand), Antonio Silva (Brazil) and J.Z. Calvan (Brazil). The complete fight card is as follows:

SHOWTIME® PPV (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT):
Brock Lesnar (USA) vs. Hong Man Choi (Korea)
Royce Gracie (Brazil) vs. Kazushi Sakuraba (Japan)
Mighty Mo (USA) vs. Mu Bae Choi (Korea)
Melvin Manhoef (Netherlands) vs. Dong Sik Yoon (Korea)

Live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT):
Jake Shields (USA) vs. Ido Pariente (Israel)
Gina Carano (USA) vs. Jan Finney (USA)

Live Stadium Only (5 p.m. PT):
Javier Vasquez (USA) vs. Katsuhiko Nagata (Japan)
Brad Pickett (UK) vs. Hideo Tokoro (Japan)

The Gracie-Sakuraba story is rich in history, as the Gracie family, represented by Royce, Ryan, Renzo and Royler have come after Sakuraba four times and all four times have fallen short of victory. The final and longest of those matches took place on May 1, 2000, in the second round of the Pride Grand Prix Open Weight Tournament, when Royce faced Sakuraba for the first time. The fight, a no-time-limit match, was scheduled for 15 minute rounds until a winner was declared. The match lasted for 90 minutes (7 rounds at 15 minutes each), and both fighters demonstrated remarkable heart and determination, especially because the winner was expected to face his next opponent on the same night. In the 4th round, Gracie injured his leg due to repeated kicks from Sakuraba and remained hobbled for another 45 minutes, until the beginning of the 8th round, when his corner threw in the towel, stopping the fight.

“I’ve been waiting for this fight for close to a decade, it’s been something that I’ve struggled to live with for some time,” said Gracie. “We both have mutual respect for each other, but June 2 is circled on my calendar as the date I plan to avenge my family’s legacy from Sakruraba.”

Tickets for Dynamite!! USA are on sale via Ticketmaster locations, www.ticketmaster.com and the LA Coliseum box office. Seats will be available on the field and throughout the majority of the stadium bowl, with the exception of limited blocked sections on each end for restricted viewing. In the stadium bowl, seats in the upper sections will sell for $30, with the exception of the west end, which will be $10. The lower bowl will sell for $60 in most areas and $30 in the west end. On the field, tickets will run at $100 on the outer rim, $250 in the middle section and $1,000 at ringside.

The other co-main event on the Dynamite!! USA fight card will face 7-foot-2 South Korean giant Hong Man Choi, aka “Techno Goliath,” against former NCAA and WWE wrestling champion Brock Lesnar. Johnnie Morton, a former USC Trojan wide receiver and NFL star, will return to the Coliseum for his MMA debut.

Dynamite!! USA will begin at 5:00 p.m., PT with doors opening at 3:30 PM, with a fight undercard that includes Hideo Tokoro, J.Z Calvin, Brad Picket as well as EliteXC fighters Jake Shields, Antonio Silva and Gina Carano. The SHOWTIME® PPV fight card will begin at 7 p.m. PT, 10 p.m. ET.

Dynamite!! USA marks the first FEG event on U.S. soil and the inaugural MMA contest in the LA Coliseum’s 74-year history. FEG’s Heroes MMA events in Japan and Korea have routinely sold out major arenas and stadiums, including the 74,000-seat Tokyo Dome. The inaugural Dynamite in August of 2002, held at Tokyo National Stadium, drew a record crowd of 92,000 fans.

The SHOWTIME® PPV fight card will feature up to six fights, with co-main events. Prior to the pay-per-view, SHOWTIME will televise the three undercard bouts, free to SHOWTIME subscribers from 9-10 p.m. ET/6-7 p.m. PT. UFC 73: STACKED features UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva in his first title defense vs. Nate “The Great” Marquardt. UFC Lightweight Champion Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk puts his newly-won belt on the line vs. Brazil’s Hermes Franca. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira steps into the Octagon™ for the first time for a heavyweight war with Heath Herring – and Tito Ortiz intends to put a painful end to Rashad Evans’ perfect 15-0 record. Let the fireworks begin. UFC 73, loaded with UFC superstars, takes place LIVE from ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. Saturday, July 7, 2007.

“We have five UFC events lined up now through July in the US and UK, and every one of them is stacked with great fights,” said UFC President Dana White. “No matter where we have a UFC, our goal is always the same – to deliver the best fights between the best mixed martial arts fighters. Our fans know they will always see a good fight, and that’s why the UFC reigns supreme in live sports today.”

White continues, “UFC 73 is one of the best cards we’ve put together this year. It’s going to deliver the one-two punch fight fans want – it has Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans, two all-state college wrestlers, both who dislike each other, settling their differences in the Octagon, as well as title defenses by our two champions Anderson Silva and Sean Sherk. We’re working on more fights right now to pack this card even heavier from top to bottom.”

About his upcoming fight versus Rashad Evans, “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz stated, “Everybody should expect fireworks. Rashad is standing in the way of my getting another title shot, and my prediction is that he won’t be able to handle my tempo or the 18,000 Tito Ortiz fans that are in Sacramento to see me win. My prediction is that fans will definitely get their money’s worth.”

Evans countered, “Tito needs to learn the meaning of respect. On July 7, I’m going to teach him what that’s all about. Let him come down from the mountain to Greg Jackson’s training camp and he’ll see what he’s up against. I’m focused and on a mission, and my goal is to knock him out.”

The last UFC event held at ARCO Arena took place Nov. 18, 2006 to a sellout crowd of more than 15,300 with a gate of $2.7 million. This event promises to be another sell-out with the layers of spectacular matchups planned, including the featured main event Anderson Silva vs. Nathan Marquardt.

Silva (18-4), fighting out of Curitiba, Brazil, defeated Rich Franklin by first round TKO at UFC 64 to become the new UFC Middleweight Champion. He is an extremely well-rounded fighter with phenomenal striking skills. He took on Travis Lutter in what was supposed to be his first title defense, but Lutter fell short of making weight by a half-pound. As a result their fight was altered to a three-round non-championship bout, but Silva still finished Lutter by submission at 2:11 of the second round. “The Spider” is looking forward to fighting Marquardt and nabbing his first successful title defense in the UFC. Wyoming-native Nathan Marquardt has yet to disappoint in mixed martial arts competition, as he has put together an impressive resume that includes 28 wins, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and recognition as a seven-time King of Pancrase. In the UFC, Marquardt’s success has continued, with wins over Ivan Salaverry, Joe Doerksen, Crafton Wallace and Dean Lister. Marquardt has earned this shot at UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, and plans to take out the Brazilian champion and take home his middleweight crown.

In a second championship bout, UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk will take on Hermes Franca in his first title defense since defeating Kenny Florian in October of last year.

Sean Sherk (35-2-1), fighting out of Oak Grove, Minn., holds an incredible record, with only two losses. The first came to Matt Hughes for the UFC World Welterweight title. Sherk went on to win 12 straight fights before losing by TKO in the second round to Georges St-Pierre. Sherk is an excellent wrestler and is one of the pound-for-pound strongest competitors in the sport. He defeated Kenny Florian in a battle for the vacant UFC lightweight title last October at UFC 64 to become champion in the newly restored weight division. Hermes Franca (18-5) has won his last eight fights – all by knockout or submission. Included in this amazing streak are UFC wins over Joe Jordan, Jamie Varner, and most recently a TKO over Spencer Fisher. This 32-year old ground ace from Fortaleza, Brazil wants to win the lightweight crown by finishing the fight Hermes-style.

One of mixed martial arts' premier heavyweights, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil's Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira (29-4-1) returns to fight in the United States for the first time since 2000 and will make his UFC debut against one of his toughest foes in Heath Herring. A premier ground fighter with a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Nogueira is known for his varied offensive attack and his habit of never being in a boring fight. The former PRIDE heavyweight champion, Nogueira holds wins over a Who's Who of the sport, including Herring, Mirko “Cro Cop”, Dan Henderson, Ricco Rodriguez, Josh Barnett, Mark Coleman, and Fabricio Werdum. On July 7th, fight fans will be in for a treat when Nogueira enters the Octagon to face “The Texas Crazy Horse.” Herring, the 6’4” 250-pounder who hails from the Lone Star State, is a perennial heavyweight contender and a tough out for anyone in the game. He is coming off a unanimous decision over 6 foot 7 giant Brad Imes at UFC 69, and is looking to ascend further up the UFC ranks with a payback win over “Minotauro” at UFC 73.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship organization is regularly holding events throughout the United States and the United Kingdom. The last three UFC events have broken venue records and overwhelmed sell-out crowds with spectacular fights and surprising upsets.

UFC 68, which took place March 3rd at Nationwide Arena in Columbus Ohio, drew a sell-out crowd of more than 19,000 and shattered the record for the highest North American attendance figure for a mixed martial arts event. At $3 million, it was also the highest grossing gate in Nationwide Arena history. The fight featured the heavyweight championship bout between Randy Couture and Tim Sylvia, where Couture electrified fight fans by dominating the much-favored Sylvia through all five championship rounds to earn status as the first three-time heavyweight champion in UFC history.

UFC 69, which took place April 7 at Toyota Center in Houston, drew a crowd of more than 15,000 and earned a gate of more than $2.8 million. It set the record for the highest gate ever in Toyota Center history. The card featured the championship bout between welterweights Georges St-Pierre and Matt Serra. Serra – who many dismissed as no match for St. Pierre – charged in at the opening bell and TKO’d St-Pierre with a flurry of strikes at just 3:25 of the first round.

UFC 70, which took place two weeks ago at MEN Arena in Manchester England, was attended by over 14,500 people and grossed a gate of more than £1.3 million. It set the record for the third largest gate in MEN’s storied history, and also broke the all-time merchandise record for the arena. UFC 70, which also aired on Spike TV in the United States, was the fifth highest rated cable sports program on television – network and cable – for the week of April 16, 2007. It was the number one rated television program on television period in the 18-34 year demographic. UFC 70 featured Croatian superstar Mirko “Cro Cop”, a heavy favorite over Gabriel Gonzaga, in the heavyweight main event. Known for causing devastation with powerful leg kicks, “Cro Cop” was expected by many to end the fight by knockout. Just before the end of the first bell, Gonzaga caught “Cro Cop” with his own weapon and landed a head kick, KOing the former Pride Grand Prix champion at 4:51 of the first round.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has five live events lined up now through July, with a dozen more planned before the end of 2007, and full lineup of fights around the globe, including Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, Australia and Mexico in 2008.

UFC 71: LIDDELL vs. JACKSON, featuring the mixed martial arts superstar and seemingly unstoppable UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson takes place May 26th at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Liddell will attempt his seventh successful title defense and complete his mission to avenge all of his previous losses.

UFC 72: VICTORY, featuring the middleweight main event fight Rich “Ace” Franklin vs. Denmark’s Martin Kampmann, and the light heavyweight special feature Forrest Griffin vs. Hector Ramirez takes place June 16th from the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The Ultimate Fighter® 5 Finale, featuring Jens Pulver vs. BJ Penn - who matched wits for six weeks as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter® Season 5 - square off June 23rd in a long-awaited rematch live from The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas.

UFC® Fight Night™, the UFC live series of fights telecast on Spike TV, features Spencer Fisher vs. Sam Stout, and will take place from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hard Rock Live.

'TWO WORLDS - ONE CAGE” -- 'Merciless' Ray Mercer vs. Kimbo Slice
5-4-2007, Denver, CO
Event date: June 23

Atlantic City, N.J.

Former World Heavyweight Champion Battles Legendary Underground Bare-Knuckler In The Cage at Boardwalk Hall on June 23, 2007 Live on Pay-Per-View

The world heavyweight champion and “baddest man on the planet' has always been crowned in the squared ring dating back to the 1800s. That distinction has been blurred recently with the rise of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Truth be told, it all started with bare-knuckle fighting, two men meeting at a random location with money exchanged between supporters in a winner-take-all brawl. On June 23 Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc. presents CFFC 5, the “Present World,” former world heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer, fighting the “Old World,” underground bare-knuckle legend Kimbo Slice, in the “New World” environment – The Cage, in an MMA bout at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, live on pay-per-view.

Tickets, priced at $50, $75, $100, $200, and $250, are on sale and available at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, by calling Ticketmaster at 800-736-1420, or online at ticketmaster.com.

Mercer, former US Army Sergeant, 1988 Olympic Gold medalist and WBO World Heavyweight Champion, enters the CFFC cage as the greatest boxer ever to infiltrate Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Mercer has fought heavyweight champions from three eras - Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, and Wladimir Klitschko. Kimbo, a product of the internet age, has developed a cult following of a series of bare-knuckle fights, seen by millions, annihilating those who dare call him out.

Says CFFC Matchmaker Gary Marino: 'I've been working on trying to get Kimbo a fight for the last year. Ray Mercer showed up at CFFC 3 and indicated he wanted to enter MMA. There should be no doubt that this fight will be history in the making.”

Supporters on both sides claim their champion will dominate. It is true that the sport of MMA has never seen striking at the level of Ray Mercer's and also true that Kimbo is nightmarishly skilled and athletic. Mercer has a background in wrestling and has been training with MMA experts in the Atlantic City area, while Kimbo trains tirelessly at Miami's famed Freestyle Fighting Academy. The only sure bet right now is that this fight is not to be missed.

Mixed Martial Arts fighting was created to determine the superior form of man-to-man combat and has since evolved into a hybrid sport. This epic contest will deliver only one answer to the question at hand...the street fighter or the prizefighter? You would have to go back to the 19th Century, to The Great John L. Sullivan, the founding figure of boxing in the USA, to find a real fight of this stature.

The card will also feature two title bouts, and ten exciting match-ups in all. If you love fighting, and want to be a part of history, be there on June 23 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey as the referee says 'You ready? You ready? LET'S RUN THIS!'

The Mercer vs. Kimbo pay-per-view telecast, beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $29.95, will be distributed by iNDEMAND Pay-Per-View and will be available to more than 61 million pay-per-view homes.

Cage Fury Fighting Championships is sanctioned by the state of New Jersey and the Northern American Boxing Council. The card is subject to change. Additional information about Cage Fury Fighting Championships can be found at.

RING OF FIRE - "AFTERSHOCK"

4-28-2007, Broomfield, CO

Doors open at 6:30 PM (MST)

Event starts at 7:30 PM (MST)

205 lb CHAMPIONSHIP (Eliot Marshall vs. Marcus Sursa):
Unlike in boxing where heavyweights reign supreme, in MMA the light heavyweight division is the most recognizable in the sport. In the seven years that RING OF FIRE has been on the circuit, the 205 belt has remained vacant. That will change on April 28 th. Top national grappler Eliot Marshall will look to add ROF Champion to his long list of credentials. The BJJ Black Belt is undefeated in MMA with a perfect 4-0 record. Following in many top fighter's footsteps, Marshall makes regular trips to New Mexico to train with Team Jackson's in Albuquerque. Also hoping to add the belt to his collection is Las Vegas based fighter Marcus Sursa. He has taken advantage of his location and trained with the top who' s who list of MMA fighters out there. The Jungle Fight Brazil veteran caught promoter Sven Bean's eye at the K-1 Tryouts over the last two years. Sursa finished at the top of the tryouts session and was offered fights but scheduling conflicts kept him off past ROF cards. He now gets his ROF appearance and it is against the promotion's #1 ranked fighter

205 lb SUPER FIGHT (Mike Nickels vs. Carpaccio Owens):
Mike Nickels returns to competition following his first round victory over Wes Combs at the Ultimate Fighter Season 3 Finale. Nickels finished the then undefeated fighter with a picture perfect rear naked choke. Already having local notoriety as one of the top tattoo artists, the Ultimate Fighter and UFC appearances elevated him to celebrity status. Nickels will be fighting in front of his hometown for the first time since September of 2005. His opponent, Carpaccio Owens last appeared at ROF 28 when he defeated K-1 veteran Andre Walker. He admitted that the altitude affected his performance, and plans to rectify that for ROF 29. The active duty Army Combatives champion will come to Colorado a week early to get acclimated. He will be staying at Fort Carson to train, and will be making appearances and promoting the event as well. He hopes to bring a few hundred new Army fans with him when he returns to ROF.

145 lb CHAMPIONSHIP (Christian Allen vs. Ryan Hass):
Also on April 28th, ROF Flyweight Champion Christian Allen will defend his belt. Allen's nickname RELENTLESS comes from his fighting style in the ring. He has the conditioning level to set an incredible pace of lightning quick stand up and rapid fire submission attempts. He became the ROF Champion in February of last year with a submission victory over Joe Doherty. A severe back injury kept him sidelined for the rest of 2006. He went through an extensive rehab and has been training non stop for his first title defense. Standing in his way will be Ryan Hass from Des Moines, Iowa. Hass lives, eats, and breaths MMA. Besides training full time as a professional fighter, he is also the co-promoter of Midwest Cage Fighting Championship with UFC veteran John Halverson. Hass is a fitness junkie, and spends most of his time split between working out in the gym and on the mat training MMA. While his ground game is his strong point he feels very comfortable on his feet. On paper this is one of the most even matches on the card. Height, weight, style , and record. But this is MMA and statistics mean nothing when the doors shuts. What matters is who wants the belt more.

155 lb FEATURE BOUT (Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Njokuani):
One of RING OF FIRE's most popular fighters is known to fans simply as the COWBOY. Donald Cerrone earned the nick name in high school after a short stint as a pro bull rider. He amassed an impressive 22-0- 1 in kickboxing before making the move to MMA. To date he has a perfect MMA record 5-0 record. None of his previous ROF opponents chose to "stand and bang", and the COWBOY finished them all by submission. His opponent at ROF 28 , also undefeated in MMA, may be the first to test those waters. Muay Thai stylist Anthony Njokuani hails from Dallas Texas. His trainer is the legendary 6 time World Muay Thai Champion Saekson Janjira. Njokuani stands 6'0 tall and is incredibly dangerous on his feet. He has a 7-0 record in MMA and is coming off 1st round head kick K.O. victory in March. This match has fight of the night written all over it.

155 lb FEATURE BOUT (Luke "Lil' HULK" Caudillo vs. Dennis “The Piranha” Davis):
Luke "Lil' HULK" Caudillo could be referred to as the gate keeper at 155 for RING OF FIRE. Since debuting for the promotion back in 2003, he has fought six times against some of the best lightweights in the region. He has recently moved to Denver and is training at Nathan Marquardt's High Altitude Gym. Caudillo is coming off a 3 fight win streak, highlighted by a 16 second K.O. in Canada's TKO organization. His opponent, Dennis “The Piranha” Davis is one of the nation's top an up and coming lightweights. He holds several titles and plans on continuing his dominance in the lightweight division. His accolades include a FCFF lightweight Champion, CFC lightweight Champion, and 4–time Sportfight lightweight Champion. Davis has a dangerous ground game and was originally trained by the world renowned Team Quest.

YOUNG GUNS CHAMPIONSHIP (Tyler THUNDER Toner vs. Scott Jorgensen):
Young Gun Champion Tyler THUNDER Toner will be defending his belt at ROF 29. The Brazilian Jiujitsu stylist is undefeated in MMA with a perfect 5-0 record. All but one of his fights have ended by TKO or submission in the first round. Toner has one punch knockout power, and very slick submission skills. Toner's opponent Scott Jorgensen wrestled in college for Boise State University. He is a 3 time PAC-10 champion and finished in the top twelve at the NCAA national tournament. Scott began his MMA career in 2006 and has put together a 4-1 record. He was also a training/sparring partner of World Champion Urijah Faber for his last fight.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH: CODY DONOVAN (Denver, CO) vs. BRETT KOBES (Sumner, WA)

LIGHT WEIGHT MATCH: JESSE HENLEY (Denver, CO) vs. JOSE AGUILAR (Las Cruces, NM)

ANNOUNCEMENT: FABIO NASCIMENTO MATCH CANCELED

As of April 24, 2007, WORLD PANCRASE CREATE, INC. (Tokyo, JAPAN) had canceled the match between Fabio Nascimento (No limits/ Team Oyama) and Yuji HISAMATSU (Wajutsukeishukai TIGER PLACE) scheduled at the PANCRASE RISING TOUR 2007, on April 27, 2007.

Pancrase discovered that Fabio has been defeated at another MMA fight dated April 21 in before leaving for the United States and been knocked out.

It is now evident that there is a failure to provide a proper MMA match with his present health condition, also there was a serious breach of contract by entering  another fight; with regret, we hereby announce our decision to cancel this, one, match out of 8 matches. As advertised, other seven matches will be held at the upcoming event.

We profoundly apologize the suffering to all the fans hoping to see Yuji Hisamatsu at the event, our business partners and people who depend on our industry for their livelihoods.

We appreciate your understandings to this matter --- that all of us wish could have been avoided.

UFC Returns to The Pearl at The Palms for The Ultimate Fighter® 5 Finale

Denver, CO

Jens “Lil’ Evil” Pulver vs. BJ “The Prodigy” Penn - Saturday, June 23 Live on Spike TV - Tickets Go On Sale Thursday, April 26 at 12pm PT

Las Vegas, Nev. –  When former UFC® Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver defeated the seemingly invincible BJ Penn in 2002, he shocked the world and proved that when it comes to the Octagon™, nothing is impossible. Since then, Penn has plotted his revenge and waited seemingly in vain for the opportunity to avenge his first and most bitter defeat. But on Saturday, June 23rd, these two 155-pound pioneers - who matched wits for six weeks as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter® Season 5 - square off in a rematch five years in the making and finally get the chance to settle their score with their fists when they battle in the main event on The Ultimate Fighting Championship® organization and Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter 5 Season finale live from The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas.

“Jens Pulver and BJ Penn were the first two lightweights to ever headline a UFC event, and they basically launched and legitimized this division,” said UFC President Dana White. “BJ has been dying for this rematch, and he claims that Pulver has been ducking him all this time, and Pulver’s side of it is, ‘I beat you, deal with it, and I will fight you again when I feel like it.’ The athletes in this sport always have so much respect for each other, but these two don’t at all – that always makes for an interesting fight.”

Tickets for The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale are $150.00, $250.00 and $350.00, plus any additional box office or service fees, and go on sale Thursday, April 26 at 12:00 pm. Please visit any Ticketmaster location, call 702-474-4000 or visit
www.ticketmaster.com to purchase tickets.

The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale will also telecast live to millions of viewers on Spike TV starting at 9:00pm ET/PT.

The Ultimate Fighter 5 live finale features an anticipated matchup between Penn and Pulver, the two coaches of Spike TV’s hit reality series.

Jens “Lil’ Evil” Pulver was the first lightweight champion in UFC history, and was undefeated in the UFC from 1999 to 2002, scoring victories over David Velasquez, Joao Roque, John Lewis, Caol Uno, and Dennis Hallman. Yet his greatest victory occurred in his first fight with BJ Penn at UFC 35 in January of 2002, where he became the first man ever to defeat “The Prodigy,” Pulver would leave the UFC after the fight due to a contract dispute, but after returning to the Octagon late in 2006 and following a stint as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, he will now try to make it two in a row over his bitter rival.

BJ Penn was nicknamed "The Prodigy" due to his meteoric rise as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt and then through the mixed martial arts ranks. A fearless fighter who has competed against heavyweights as well as lightweights

and welterweights, this Hawaiian battler may be best remembered for scoring one of the biggest upsets in mixed martial arts history when he rose 15 pounds in weight to take on and defeat Matt Hughes in his first-ever welterweight bout in 2004 . But despite his success, the night of January 11, 2002 still haunts him, and the only way to erase that memory is to defeat Pulver on June 23rd.

All bouts are live and subject to change.
