UFC announces Unit Kingdom event

2-16-2007

Denver, CO

APRIL 21, 2007 LIVE FROM MANCHESTER’S MEN ARENA

The Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization today announced its long-awaited return to Great Britain this spring when the world’s greatest mixed martial artists throw down at Manchester's MEN Arena Saturday, April 21.

The Manchester event will be the first UFC event in the United Kingdom since 2002.

“We are very excited to be back in the UK,” said UFC President Dana White. “We had a lot of obstacles over the last six years, but I never gave up on bringing the UFC back to the UK. Now we have our UK office up and running, we’re going to have fights in the UK and throughout Europe, so the UFC is here to stay.”

It seems Great Britain cannot wait for that to happen.

Marshall Zelaznik, the UFC’s UK President said, "There's already a huge buzz about what is going to happen at the MEN Arena on April 21. When the UK website – uk.ufc.com - was launched two weeks ago the stats went through the roof and there is great anticipation as to who will be fighting in Manchester.”

Those details - and full ticket information - will be announced in the near future. For UFC fans located in Great Britain, this is the official announcement that the UFC is coming after a half-decade of waiting.

Zelaznik added, “Our British fans have been demanding this and now, finally, the UFC returns to the UK. And this time we are here to stay."

USA Judo and USA Wrestling join forces to host 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Las Vegas
2-8-2007

Denver/Broomfield, CO
Release by Nicole Jomantas, USA Judo

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – USA Judo is pleased to announce that for the first time ever the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Judo will be held simultaneously with the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Wrestling, June 15-16, 2008 in Las Vegas, Nev.

“This is a great opportunity for us to showcase judo to the wrestling community in the U.S. We have had some great success with wrestlers moving into judo and making an impact in our sport,” said USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) “This is indeed a perfect Olympic Trials marriage and it will all happen in Las Vegas! I have had the opportunity to put on events with USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender and his staff in the past, and I know that they put on first-class tournaments. This is a win-win proposition for both judo and wrestling!”

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for all sports is a collaborative, three-way partnership between the U.S. Olympic Committee, the National Governing Bodies and the Local Organizing Committees.

The Trials will be held at the Thomas and Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada – Las Vegas and will feature contests in each of the 14 Olympic judo weight divisions as well as the 18 Olympic wrestling weight classes in the three Olympic styles (men’s freestyle, men’s Greco-Roman, women’s freestyle) to be contested at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

With eight athletes expected to compete in the Trials for each weight division, as many as 112 judo players will be eligible for berths on the U.S. Olympic Team. USA Wrestling expects almost 200 wrestlers to participate in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

“We are very excited that USA Judo will host their Trials in Las Vegas in conjunction with the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling," said Rich Bender (Colorado Springs, Colo.), USA Wrestling Executive Director. "This promises to be a can’t miss weekend for wrestling and judo fans, as well as the general sport fan. Combining the two events, allows both sports an opportunity to cross-promote our teams and programs to a much larger spectator and media base.”

USA Judo has held several key events in Las Vegas during recent years, including the highly successful 2001-04 U.S. Open Championships.

“I am extremely happy that USA Judo will be showcasing our top athletes in Las Vegas in 2008 in conjunction with USA Wrestling,” said USA Judo President Dr. Ron Tripp (Norman, Okla.) “Coming from a strong wrestling background into the sport of judo, it will be wonderful to have an opportunity to enjoy both sports at their pinnacle events of the Olympic quadrennium at the same time. In my first term as President, one of my initial actions was to move the U.S. Open from Colorado Springs to the mega entertainment capitol of the world, Las Vegas. The combination of the wrestling and judo Olympic Trials together in Las Vegas will bring things full circle as I fulfill my Presidential service in 2008.”

The local organizers for the Trials are Las Vegas Events which has played host to hundreds of major sporting events, including the National Finals Rodeo, NASCAR Nextel Cup and Craftsman Truck Series events, NHRA Drag Racing, USA Basketball Men’s Senior National Team Training and Exhibition, the Las Vegas Bowl, PBR World Finals, Vegoose Music Festival and the signature New Year’s Eve production, America‘s Party.

“Las Vegas is proud to become the host city for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Judo,” said Pat Christenson (Las Vegas, Nev.), President of Las Vegas Events. “The combination of judo and wrestling will provide fans an opportunity to see these great athletes compete for berths on the U.S. Olympic Team. There is a great deal of synergy between the two sports, so fans will have a chance to see both disciplines set against the backdrop of Las Vegas, the most exciting city in the world.”

RING OF FIRE 28: EVOLUTION

1-24-2007

Denver/Broomfield, CO

ROF promoter Sven BOOGIE Bean is happy to announce that ROF 28: EVOLUTION will take place on Friday, February 16th 2007 at the brand new Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield , Colorado .

The event is named EVOLUTION as this show is the next step in growth for the region’s longest running MMA promotion. The World Class event will feature not only the top athletes on the promotion’s roster, but top athletes from around the world as well.

In the main event, World Champion Duane BANG! Ludwig returns to Colorado for the first time in over a year. Ludwig is a UFC, Strikeforce and K-1 veteran with a 14-5 record in MMA. The two time World Champion is coming off a huge TKO victory over Anthony Fryklund at Strikeforce this past December. He wants to build off that victory and start 2007 off right with a win in front of his hometown crowd. Facing Ludwig will be Pancrase fighter Shinya Kamuzawa of Okinawa , Japan . Kamuzawa has a combined record of 10 wins 1 loss and 1 draw. Kumazawa is a super aggressive young fighter with solid submission skills. He is also known to stand and trade, something most of Ludwig’s opponents are very leery of doing.  Kumazawa is not deterred by Ludwig’s reputation as being one of the most lethal strikers in the sport. On the contrary, Kumazawa intends to make a name for himself with a victory at Ring Of Fire.  Ludwig was impressed by what he saw on tapes of Kumazawa. “The guy is a gamer for sure. He looks like he really likes to fight and is not afraid to throw down. Those are the guys that get me excited to fight. I know he won’t be afraid to throw some leather with me which is great. As soon as he tags me once, it’s on. I won’t look past him at all but 2007 is my year. Last year I had a few bumps in the road, but now I am rededicated to my fight career. I want to make my way back to the top. And it all starts with Kumazawa at Ring of Fire.”

Current Light Weight Champion, Alvin KID Robinson (8-1) will take a new direction in his career. The KID will be dropping to 145 lbs for the first time. With recent changes in the national scene there is now great opportunities for fighters in that weight class. Robinson is a world class athlete who loves challenges, and is excited at the move to this division. Facing Robinson will be top UCE fighter Oliver Bradstreet from West Valley , Utah . Bradstreet brings an amazing 21-1 record with him. Bradstreet is easily Robinson’s most experienced opponent to date. Both Robinson and Bradstreet consider wrestling their base, and style wise match up perfectly. The WEC just crowned Urijah Faber their 145 champ, a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by The KID. He has his sites set on a World Title, but first has to get past Bradstreet at ROF 28.

One of the promotion’s most popular fighters Donald COWBOY Cerrone also makes his return to ROF. The COWBOY is mostly known for his stand up skills and KO power. After a short stint as a pro bull rider, the self described thrill seeker found himself competing in local kickboxing matches. After amassing a 22-0-1 record, he then made the move to MMA. To date he has a perfect 4-0 record, finishing all his opponents by submission. His opponent at ROF 28 is also undefeated in MMA. Ryan Roberts has cut his teeth in the very tough Midwest circuit. The wrestler/boxer has acquired a 5-0 record and the Fury Fighting Lightweight title belt along the way.  A lot more than bragging rights is on the line here as neither fighter wants to add a notch in the losing column.

The light heavyweight division is one of the most lucrative in the sport, and ROF is in no short supply of top athletes to offer.  BJJ Black Belt Eliot Marshall will again step in the MMA arena. Marshall has made a great name for himself in the grappling circuit gaining gold medals and national titles. He has transitioned perfectly into MMA, and looks to add another win to his undefeated record on February 16th.

K-1 veteran, Andre The Silencer Walker will compete under MMA rules for the first time since 2002. The power puncher needed less than round to dispatch his opponent at ROF 27 under K-1 Rules, and feels the time is now to make a run at the 205 division.

The special feature match for ROF 28 will be a women’s rules bout. Muay Thai specialist Michelle Waterson will face off against sport jujitsu athlete Jennifer Moran.

The full fight card will be posted this week at www.rofmma.com.

ROF 28 will mark the first event at what is truly one of the nicest venues in the west. The 45 million dollar Broomfield Event Center is just a few months old. It is home to the Colorado RAGE hockey team and the Colorado 14ers basketball franchise. The facility is state of the art and there is not a bad seat in the house. "We are happy to be working with Sven Bean and the RING OF FIRE for our first fighting event at the Broomfield Event Center . We know that Mixed Martial Arts is the fastest growing sport in the country. We also are aware that RING OF FIRE is the top promotion in the region with a great reputation in the industry. We are excited for the World Class event on February 16th and look forward to the future with RING OF FIRE." said BEC Director of Booking, Kelly Kuper.

Tragedy strikes Colorado Wrestlers

1-17-2007

Denver/Broomfield, CO

Two young wrestlers need our help...

Berthoud Colorado wrestlers Tyler Carron and Niko Landeros were seriously injured late Monday night in a car accident. Both the wrestlers had pulled over on the side of a road in Berthoud to fix a flat tire, they were pulling the spare tire out of the back of their SUV when they were struck by another SUV. Niko was airlifted to Denver Memorial and Tyler was taken to McKay medical center, where he was later flown to Denver Memorial. Tyler lost both of his legs and the doctors were not able to reattach either leg. Niko was able to have one of his legs reattached but the doctors are not sure if the body will accept the leg.

Both are in serious condition.

An account has been set up at Bank of the West in Longmont, CO. Checks can be made to The Tyler Carron/Niko Landeros Charitable Fund. The checks can be sent to: Bank of the West, 1610 Hover Rd. Longmont, CO 80501. All of the proceeds will be divided between the two families to help cover medical expenses/rehab./etc.

Both young men are fans of MMA and supporters of ROF. These are the times when the MMA community needs to stand up and show the rest of the world what we are truly all about.

Please help us with this cause.

Local wrestling coach and ROF veteran Leister Bowling is also helping to coordinate these efforts. New TV deals for IFL

1-17-2007

Denver/Broomfield, CO

FSN and MyNetworkTV have reached a strategic, three-tier television and new media programming alliance with the International Fight League (IFL). The joint announcement was made today by FSN President Bob Thompson, Twentieth Television President Bob Cook, and IFL CEO Gareb Shamus.

International Fight League, Inc. (IFLI:OTCBB), co-founded by Shamus and Kurt Otto, is the world’s first team-based professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) league. The IFL launches its first full 11-date season this Friday, Jan. 19, 2007 in Oakland, Calif. The IFL operates as a single entity with 12 teams, 10 of which are based in the United States (New York, Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, Tucson, Portland, San Jose, Reno, Orange County and the Quad Cities), along with teams in Tokyo and Toronto.

Under terms of the alliance, FSN has multi-year rights to televise 22 one-hour late night event programs, produced by the IFL, beginning in the second quarter of 2007. FSN also has the right to produce related ancillary programming, pay-per-view events and video-on-demand product.

The agreement also calls for FSN and the IFL to establish a joint venture to manage, maximize and distribute IFL-related digital media rights including online/Internet, broadband video and mobile, with the potential to leverage Fox’s powerful digital assets including Myspace, IGN, Fox Mobile Entertainment’s new global distribution partnerships and other potential third party digital platforms.

“Mixed martial arts, which has evolved tremendously in recent years, is one of the fastest growing sports in the world,” said FSN’s Thompson. “In addition to FSN committing a regular weekly window to the IFL to help establish the league, News Corp’s broad array of digital platforms positions us perfectly to unlock and maximize the tremendous value of the league’s new media potential.”

In addition to FSN’s weekly program and the digital media joint venture, MyNetworkTV is planning to broadcast 22 two-hour IFL-produced programs to begin in mid-2007. The IFL produced programs for MyNetworkTV will be an exciting combination of event action, highlights, features, vignettes and the league’s latest news.

“We are thrilled to be working with the IFL and we look forward to developing action-filled programming based on their events for our viewers,” said Cook. “The dynamic nature of IFL’s teamwork and competition also provides a colorful backdrop to go beyond the athletes’ lives outside of the ring.”

“This is a historic day for the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, and we want to thank everyone at FOX for seeing this great opportunity and making it a reality,” said Shamus, IFL co-founder and CEO. “This partnership will give MMA in general and the IFL in particular a chance to showcase the personalities, training regimen and great skill and discipline that these athletes and their coaches have to a much wider audience both in the United States and eventually around the world.”

The IFL was assisted in the negotiation of the partnership by the William Morris Agency.

Each of the 12 IFL teams for 2007 competes in three regular season events; the teams with the top four overall win-loss team records will advance to the semi-finals, which will be held on Thursday, Aug. 2 at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. The 2007 IFL Finals will be held at The Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday, Sept. 15. Each of the nine regular season IFL events consists of four teams – each with an athlete in five weight classes competing. The team that wins the best three of five match setup wins, similar to collegiate and high school wrestling meets. The coach of each team is a world-renown MMA champion, who has assembled his team (the athletes all train as a team together) in a specific city and training center.

The IFL also differs from other MMA organizations in that the bouts are held in an oversized five-rope boxing ring with three, four-minute rounds, each designed to create the most compelling in-arena experience. The IFL has also exceeded the state regulations for safety in the ring, by outlawing elbow strikes to the head. The rules also prohibit head butting, hair pulling, elbows to the head or face, and strikes to the spine, kidney, throat or back of the head. Fighters are not allowed to use abusive language in the fighting area or any form of unsportsmanlike conduct that causes injury to an opponent.

All events will be subject to the rules and approval of the state athletic commissions in each state in which the event will be held. The scoring system is similar to professional boxing as well. However, in the event of a draw, a fourth round takes place to decide a winner.

Comu added, "The Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) industry is the fastest growing Sports Entertainment business in the world. We hope to be a large player in this small but rapidly growing space and deliver high quality entertainment to the networks and fans around the world."

Grapplearts Writer Donald Walter states, "Mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in the United States as mixed martial arts events and training centers spring up all over the country. And the money the sport is making continues to grow at a nearly exponential rate!"

In its December 6, 2006 profile on Ultimate Fighting, USA Today writer Marco della Cava states, "Football and baseball may be American pastimes, but for a high-tech generation weaned on immediacy, such sporadic action doesn't compare with UFC's short and definitive flurries of violence."

SUN Investment Banker and Broker Dealer, Titan Securities Inc., President Brad Brooks stated, "SUN has a very compelling business proposition and we are very excited to help in playing a role in their future." Titan Securities will be providing Investment Banking services as SUN looks at potential acquisition opportunities as well as Broker Dealer services for the Company.

Shamrock, 34, of San Jose, Calif., has been looking for the right opportunity to make a noteworthy return to the sport. The five-time defending middleweight champion semi-retired from competition after defeating Tito Ortiz by submission in 1999 and has returned for just three fights since.
