12-10-2006

Denver/Broomfield, Colorado

CBS' "60 Minutes" will air a segment on the growing popularity of mixed martial arts, featuring IFL coaches and MMA legends Pat Miletich and Renzo Gracie this Sunday, December 10th at 7 p.m. EST.

The segment, done by "60 Minutes" reporter Scott Pelley, takes an in-depth look at the nuances of MMA and why it has become the fighting sport of choice for America and the world.

“This is yet another example of how the sport of mixed martial arts continues to gain traction in the mainstream,” said IFL co-founder and Commissioner Kurt Otto. “It is great that champions like Pat and Renzo, along with our other coaches and all the great athletes that they train, such as UFC champion Matt Hughes (who is featured in the segment) and others, are steadily getting more and more recognition for all their years of hard work and dedication."

Pelley trained with both Gracie and Miletich, and the “60 Minutes” cameras were on site when their two teams met at The MARK in Moline, Illinois, on September 23, the same night Gracie took on Miletich in the main event Superfight. The piece will also look at UFC champion Hughes, his career and his relationship with Miletich.

Las Vegas Auditions for MMA Movie “Never Submit” Announced

12-9-2006
Denver/Broomfield, Colorado

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Imperia Entertainment (Pink Sheets: IPEI) President James Hergott announces today that the Xyience Training Center in Las Vegas, Nevada will host open auditions for a movie about the sport of mixed martial arts entitled Never Submit on December 16th and 17th beginning at noon each day.

The Xyience Training Center is owned and operated by John Wood and is home to a number of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Pride Fighting Championship and International Fight League (IFL) competitors, many of which are expected to audition for roles in Never Submit.

According to the movies producer, Cindy Ortiz, “The Xyience Training Center is one of the most popular MMA gyms in Sin City and came highly recommended as a place we should consider inviting to host one of the Never Submit open casting calls. There’s no denying the caliber of athletes associated with the XTC are some of the best in this sport and with Vegas being a hotbed for MMA talent, Imperia is making this stop a two day affair. John Wood runs a top-notch operation and I have no doubt we will be able to cast and fill a number of roles on our list.”

“Robert Roveta of Denaro Sports Marketing (www.denaroathletes.com headquartered in Las Vegas, NV) and I have been in contact since April about the movie” explains Ortiz. “He is the Jerry Maguire of this sport and works with an impressive list of rising fighters he plans to have on hand to audition including TUF/UFC fighters Alex Karalexis, Josh Burkman, Nate Quarry, Chris Leben and Tyson Griffin. Jervis Cole sent a group of fighter’s to the San Jose auditions managed by his firm, Zinkin Entertainment (www.zinkin.tv), and a handful should expect to receive callbacks. I encourage other managers and agents to follow their lead as we continue our cross country talent search over the next few months.”

“Also slated to audition are TUF season one contract winner and UFC fighter Forrest Griffin, TUF season two contract winner and UFC fighter Rashad Evans, former Octagon Girl and current WFA Ring Girl Amber Nicole Miller and a plethora of IFL, Pride FC and UFC fighters. Top Hollywood casting agents are submitting requests for private auditions for name talent having graced the silver screen in recent years and a multitude of additional requests to host casting calls have been pouring in over the past two months” comments James Hergott, writer and director of Never Submit. “Our staff is working overtime trying to keep up but these are great problems to have.”

“Competing in combat sports is something these athletes choose to do…but it’s not the only thing they can do” adds Hergott. “Our recent open casting call in San Jose at American Kickboxing Academy turned out some of the biggest and brightest stars representing the sport of MMA right now and we were very pleased with the acting talent and physical skills many of these athletes possess. I’m looking forward to seeing more of what this sport has to offer in Las Vegas at the Xyience Training Center in a few weeks. Pride Fighting Championships superstars Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua have already been cast.”

Inquiries pertaining to fighters interested in auditioning for roles, potential sponsorship opportunities available to companies/vendors and MMA media requests should be made via e-mail to “Never Submit” Producer Cindy Ortiz at cindy@imperiaentertainment.com.

Character descriptions and scripted scenes intended for audition preparation purposes are now available for distribution and may be requested via e-mail @ cindy@imperiaentertainment.com or downloaded directly from the movies website @ www.neversubmit.com.

Director James Hergott comments, “As a former Judo competitor, I have closely followed this sport and have been a fan of MMA since its North American introduction in 1993. Only during the past two years has mixed martial arts finally started to gain true mainstream acceptance. Never Submit will appeal to the hardcore fans as well as expose movie goers to this emerging sport who may know very little, if anything, about MMA when they enter the theater. My goal is to turn as many viewers into MMA fans as possible by the closing credits.”

Hergott continues, “It is my intent as writer and director to portray the sport of MMA, the athletes competing in it and the fans supporting it in a positive light. MMA isn’t a barbaric underground blood sport like it has been depicted in the past by other filmmakers. It’s a very intellectual sport; a physical chess match between men. Never Submit will showcase the courage, integrity, commitment, athleticism and sportsmanship found in these modern day gladiators and I’m looking forward to telling their stories.”

“To most professional fighters in this sport, Never Submit is a metaphor describing the way they live their lives,” Hergott explains. “These athletes aren’t quitters. They have a discipline that runs deep that impacts most of what they do. They have something in their DNA that the rest of us do not. These athletes are competitive by nature and the will to succeed and be number one is always the goal.”

“Their appearance is typically their ‘secret weapon’ because they can be accountants, teachers, police officers, firemen and/or attorneys,” Hergott adds. “They don’t have to be tall like basketball players or massive and quick like football players in order to be champions. MMA offers one of, if not the most diverse and talented pools of athletes found in any sport, in any country, on any continent in the world and that’s one of the things that makes it so great.”

ABOUT NEVER SUBMIT

Never Submit is an inspirational tale similar to Rocky, but the lead character is an intelligent young man (as are most fighters competing in this sport) rather than a beaten-down punch-drunk fighter. An amazing cast of characters will round out this film; each from different walks of life; each with his own set of circumstances and motivating factors driving him to be the best. For some, their best won’t be good enough.

Different roads bring them all to the same intersection where the human spirit is put to the test. For these athletes, their hearts, physical skills and mental tenacity decides the victor… and there can only be one. Never Submit takes movie goers inside the methodical, fast paced, action packed, unpredictable and sometimes controversial world of mixed martial arts, deemed by many to be the most exciting sport on the planet.

Ms. Ortiz comments, “MMA is regulated and sanctioned by numerous state athletic commissions because they recognize it to be a legitimate sport just like baseball, football and basketball. These fighters are just as much professional athletes as the elite performers found in other sports. I feel that Never Submit will have widespread appeal because it doesn’t matter what language you speak or where you are from, competitive fighting is universal. The action in this film is going to keep movie goers on the edge of their seats just like it does millions of spectators flocking to live MMA events every year around the globe.”
Ortiz continues, “The script doesn’t present MMA as the hobby it is for some, nor does it focus on amateur level competitors. Never Submit showcases the intensity of professional fighting and I think it’s going to succeed in bringing long overdue recognition and respect to the sport as well as the athletes representing it. Typically we see films with great action scenes but not-so-great acting or storylines… or just the opposite. That’s not the case with Never Submit. The fight sequences are outstanding, the dramatic scenes are warm and convincing and the way Mr. Hergott has tied these two elements together makes for a great story. The roles are challenging and rewarding and the end result will be something everyone involved can be very proud of.”

Imperia Entertainment recently announced a partnership with TapouT Magazine (www.tapoutmagazine.com) as part of a cross-country tour to promote the publication as well as the movie. Stops at select dojos to hold auditions for Never Submit are being finalized. TapouT Magazine readers can expect to see the mixed martial arts movie prominently featured in the bi-monthly publication throughout the casting, filming and theatrical release stages, as well as enjoy behind the scenes details from Never Submit director James Hergott, one of TapouT Magazines newest contributors.

RING OF FIRE promoter Sven BOOGIE Bean has released the full card for the 27th edition of RING OF FIRE CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHTING. The event dubbed "COLLISION COURSE" is aptly named. The main event features a match up between two of the most dominant 155lb fighters on the promotion's roster.

Champion Alvin KID Robinson puts his belt on the line one more time as he faces Greco wrestler Rocky Johnson. Robinson recently had a short stint with the IFL, until a back injury pulled him from competition. He returns 100% physically and wants to show the fans exactly why he is undefeated in ROF competition. Robinson, a Royce Gracie brown belt brings a 7-1 record to the ring and has the distinction of acquiring all of his 7 wins by submission. Robinson's BJJ is complimented by wrestling, a sport the young athlete participated in high school and college. He also utilizes a strong knowledge of boxing fundamentals to be a complete fighter. Johnson's style has a foundation in Greco Roman wrestling. He has found a mentor and coach in World Champion fighter Clarence Thatch. Thatch is known for producing some of the best strikers in the region and has rounded out Johnson's style. The combination has worked for the Elizabeth, CO fighter as he has compiled a 7-4 record along the way. Johnson moved in title contention after his last ROF appearance with a submission victory over Olympic judo competitor Ali Abdelaziz.

The event also marks the ROF debut of Canadian Mark The Machine Hominick. Hominick has terrorized the Canadian scene for the last few years becoming TKO World Champion an unprecedented 7 times. The TEAM TOMPKINS standout has amassed an impressive 12-5 record in MMA. He also is a two time UFC veteran racking up wins against Yves Edwards and Jorge Gurgel. Hominick's style is based on his Muay Thai background in which he was also Canadian amateur champion. This could prove to be a great match up stylistically has his opponent is also a muay thai fighter. Team Janjira fighter, Douglas Edwards, hails from Wichita, Kansas. He has a respectable 4-2 MMA record. He is no stranger to competition where his double digit record earned him a fight against living legend Baxter "The One Armed Bandit" Humby. Edwards has worked his ground skills with MMA/Grappler Eric Payne, and currently holds a Blue Belt in BJJ. Edwards recently returned to Kansas after living in Atlanta where he trained with Manu N'toh. Combining the teachings of Janjira, N'Toh, and Payne has made him a very dangerous and versatile fighter. Edwards realizes that a victory here will jump start his career and feels confident that he matches very well with the Canadian.

ROF 27 also features the return of BJJ Black Belt Eliot Marshall. Marshall hails from Boulder, CO and is quite well known on the grappling circuit. He is a multiple champion in grappling and so far has transitioned well into MMA, remaining undefeated at 2-0. Marshall was originally scheduled to face Muay Thai world Champion Jeff Ford, but Ford withdrew from competition citing business conflicts. Calls were made to multiple camps looking for a replacement, and Muay Thai fighter Dan Green of American Fork, Utah agreed to the match. Green's last appearance at ROF was under K-1 rules, where his victory earned him a spot at the K-1 USA show in Las Vegas. Green is a well conditioned athlete who has a very aggressive style. While he is veteran of over twenty K-1 style bouts, Green is making his MMA debut. The 205 lb division is one of the hottest and most lucrative in the industry and both fighters are trying to work their way in to the big leagues.

The ROF 27 card will also be highlighted by a K-1 Rules match. K-1 USA veteran Andre The Silencer Walker will compete against Australia's Michael Monachy. Walker will need to shake any off ring rust qucikly as his opponent has cut his teeth on the ultra tough south pacific circuit.

Rounding out the feature bouts are matches at the 135 and 145 weight limits. South Dakota's Clint Godfrey returns to ROF for a second time as he faces New Mexico fighter John THE MAGICIAN Dodson. Godfrey has the "work horse" mentality in the ring and is competent at all ranges. His fighting his reminiscent of a Pat Militech style and boasts a 5-1 record. His opponent can only be described as the Sakuraba of his division. Flips, spins, cartwheels and smiles are all part of Dodson's arsenal. ROF boasts a super strong 135 division and the winner here will go on to face Nick Mamalis in February for the number one ranking.

If all of this weren't enough the top two up and coming 145 lb fighters on the promotion's roster will battle for the YOUNG GUNS Title belt. Boulder's Tyler Toner will go head to head with Loveland's Joey Jesser. Both fighters are undefeated at 4-0 and 3-0 respectively, and both fighter list BJJ as there base style. Toner is under the Renzo Gracie system, while Jesser flies the Royce Gracie banner. Both guys have what it takes to win, solid ground, solid stand up, and solid conditioning. This one will come down to who has the stronger will to win in one of the most evenly matched bouts in the promotion's history.

“This is a landmark day for all fight sports in general and for the growing number of fans of Mixed Martial Arts in particular,” said IFL Co-founder and Commissioner Kurt Otto. “For the first time, fans and business partners will be able to plot out their entire event calendar well in advance, and know where and when they will be able to see these great athletes and their coaches compete around the country in 2007.”

“We were very pleased with the interest of so many venues to work with the IFL,” said Marc Geiger of William Morris. “It is a great sign for both the sport of Mixed Martial Arts and for the solid business plan that the IFL has that these very prestigious arenas were so eager to do multi-year partnerships.”

Each of the nine regular season events will consist of four teams – each with an athlete in all five weight classes competing – along with a special Superfight, for a minimum of 11 bouts per card. Each of the 12 IFL teams for 2007 will compete in three regular season events; the teams with the top four overall win-loss team records will advance to the semi-finals, which will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2007 at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The 2007 IFL Finals will then be held at The Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday, September 15, 2007. The IFL will also hold a Grand Prix all-star event, comprised of the athletes with the top eight individual win-loss records, following the completion of the team season, with the dates and times to be announced.

All events will be subject to the rules and approval of the state athletic commissions in each state in which the event will be held.

The 10 venues for the 2007 season (The Forum will host two events) will scale to between 7,000 and 13,000 seats, which has been consistent with the IFL’s plan of managed growth. The venues for the inaugural season will include:

• The ORACLE Arena (Oakland, Calif.) on Friday, January 19

• Reliant Arena (Houston) on Friday, February 2

• The Arena at Gwinnett Center (Atlanta) on Friday, February 23

• The Forum (Los Angeles) on Friday, March 17

• The MARK of the Quad Cities (Moline, Ill.) on Saturday, April 7

• Jenkins Arena/Lakeland Center (Lakeland, Fla.) on Friday, April 13

• Sears Centre (Chicago) on Saturday, May 19

• Everett Events Center (Everett, Wash.) on Friday, June 1

• TBD on Saturday, June 23

2007 Semi-Finals

• Continental Airlines Arena (East Rutherford, N.J.) on Thursday, August 2

2007 Finals

• The Forum (Los Angeles) on Saturday, September 15

*The start time for each event is 7:30 p.m. local time. Tickets to each venue, with the exception of East Rutherford and the Finals in Los Angeles, are currently on sale through www.ifl.tv and www.ticketmaster.com, at Ticketmaster outlets, and via telephone through Ticketmaster. Ticket prices range between $25 and $150, also in keeping with the IFL plan for the inaugural season.

Roger Gracie makes MMA debut vs. Ron Waterman

11-28-2006

Denver, Colorado

Roger Gracie of the famed Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gracie family makes his mixed martial arts (MMA) debut against ex-WWE superstar Ron Waterman at BodogFight's spectacular pay-per-view event at Vancouver's PNE Agrodome on Saturday, December 2. This headline Superfight will stamp Vancouver as an elite MMA destination city alongside Tokyo and Las Vegas.

"Bringing Roger Gracie and his family's tradition to Vancouver marks a new era in sports entertainment," says Bodog.com Entertainment Founder Calvin Ayre, whose company recently announced plans for international expansion into the European and Asian markets. "MMA is one of the world's fastest growing spectator sports and BodogFight is holding its promise to deliver fans incredible matchups."

Roger Gracie is a highly decorated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner and son of Reyla Gracie, the daughter of Carlos Gracie and Mauricio Motta Gomes. Carlos Gracie was co-founder of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) discipline and Mauricio Motta Gomes holds a seventh degree BJJ black belt and is one of the sport's foremost authorities. With such pedigree, it's easy to understand why this debut carries such significance in the MMA world. The Gracie fighting heritage, which spans five generations, has fallen from the top ranks of the fighting world because the spotlight has been seized by a succession of American wrestlers and hybridized MMA competitors. However, 24-year-old phenom Roger is the great hope for the Gracie family to reclaim prominence in the sport in the 21st century.

Gracie isn't shy about his chances Saturday, proclaiming in a recently published Bodog Nation article that he will submit Waterman, a 13-year veteran in the sport. "I know my physical conditioning is better than his, so it'll be in the first or second round, maximum," Gracie predicted, sparking a war of words.

BodogFight: Season I culminates Saturday with a spectacular fight card featuring the eight Team USA vs. Russia matches, three incredible Superfights headlined by Gracie's MMA debut and two undercard bouts guaranteed to provide heavy-handed stand-up action.

IFL adds new Chicago Team

11-28-2006

Denver, Colorado

The International Fight League (IFL) today announced that completion of its 12-team field for its 2007 season, adding a Chicago-based team of Russian fighters named the Red Bears. The inaugural IFL season will begin in the first quarter of 2007, with the 11 date full season schedule to be announced shortly.

“We are very pleased that we have been able to add this group of up-and-coming athletes as the 12th team for our first full season,” said IFL Co-founder and Commissioner Kurt Otto. “Chicago is a hotbed for the sport and this will create a great natural rivalry with our Quad Cities team, as well as giving the strong Russian following of the sport a team to follow and connect with.”

The Red Bears will be coached by MMA veteran Igor Zinoviev and will consist of a roster of athletes from Russia, who will live and train together in a renovated fire house in Chicago.

The announcement of the Chicago-based team brings to 12 the final number for the IFL’s first season. Teams based in Reno, Nevada; Tucson, Arizona; and Orange County, California, were announced earlier in the fall, and will join with the original eight IFL teams who have competed in the IFL “Legends” and “World Team Championship” tournaments which were held this spring and fall. The final IFL event for 2006 will take place at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut on Friday, December 29 between the Moline-based Silverbacks and the Portland-based Wolfpack.

PRIDE President Speaks

11-26-2006

Denver, Colorado

A recent GONG Magazine interview with Pride president Sakakibara Nobuyuki.

Sakakibara:  "I will reform Pride strongly.  Pride-Bushido was a toy box.  We considered the various plans and something was born. We made a lightweight class and welterweight class.  Fresh power came from it.  Bushido was a special event for light and welterweights.   Now, this separate system is nonsense.  Bushido and Pride will be united in 2007 into one event including heavyweight fighters like Fujita and lightweights like Gomi Takanori."

Question: Is Bushido finished completely?

Sakakibara:
"Bushido will become a brand name for foreign country's Pride events."

Question: How will you change the Pride Grand Prix?

Sakakibara:
"We plan that a Pride Grand Prix is held every four years, for each weight-class, like the Olympics. So in 2007, only one weight-class Grand Prix is being held.  All other events will be a number series and include a title match. In every event there will be a title match."

Question: Next year, Pride has operated for ten years. You made a revolution!

Sakakibara:
"Yes, this first revolution is the February 2007, USA event.  Wandarei Silva does a title match and there will be four weight-classes of fighters."

Question: If every event has a title match, will you have to make new weight-classes?

Sakakibara:
"USA MMA has a super heavyweight class and it is possible we would make a under lightweight (73kg) class.  But, it is not necessary to do that all at once. We will consider these options step by step"

GRACIE leaves The World Fighter
11-21-20006

Denver, Colorado

Cesar Gracie posted the following statement on his website:

"I have officially resigned from The World Fighter organization and have now no affiliation whatsoever with the show.
I was initially approached by the show's president, Jason Aiello, when he requested that some of my fighters fight on the show. After hearing about the proposed sums of money to be paid to the fighters, I was cautiously optimistic. My fighters were paid large signing bonuses and I was eventually contracted to work as a consultant and matchmaker for the organization. All of our checks cleared, leading me to believe that the show was a legitimate entity.

In the last couple of weeks there have been statements coming from the organization that I knew were inconsistent and erroneous. The website, the worldfighter.com is claiming to have a Renzo Gracie vs. Frank Shamrock fight signed for January at the Boardwalk Hall in New Jersey. This fight will not be happening and there is no show set for New Jersey. As far as I know there is not sufficient funding for any future show and my attempts to get financial disclosures were unsuccessful.

I realize that there are fighters that could possibly be turning down legitimate offers while they wait to fight on a show that will not be happening and I refuse to allow my name to be associated with an organization that continues to play a game of smoke and mirrors." - Cesar Gracie

UFC 65 - Party Open to the Public!!

11-14-2006

Denver, Colorado

This Saturday night all sports fans are invited to UFC 65: BAD INTENTIONS party at CHAMPPS Aspen Grove hosted by RING OF FIRE.

Two UFC championship fights, one amazing night! The main event is a rematch fans have been demanding. UFC Welterweight Champion, Matt Hughes, defends his belt against top contender, Georges "Rush" St. Pierre. UFC Heavyweight Champion, Tim Sylvia, defends his title against Jeff Monson

World Welterweight Champion, Matt Hughes, is perhaps the greatest welterweight fighter of all time. He has defended his title successfully 8 times against a "who's who" list of challengers, including BJ Penn, Frank Trigg, Hayato Sakurai, Carlos Newton, and his UFC 65 opponent, Georges St. Pierre. Hughes defeated BJ Penn at UFC 63 after St. Pierre was forced to pull out of their scheduled contest due to injury. Hughes plans to prove he is the best pound-four- pound figher in the world by defeating St. Pierre again at UFC 65.

Canadian Champion, Georges "Rush" St. Pierre has been fighting for a rematch with Matt Hughes for nearly two years. He has dismantled everyone in his path, including Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk, and BJ Penn. Despite having to withdraw from their previously scheduled fight in September, St. Pierre is 100 percent ready and feels it is his time to shine as the new Welterweight Champion of the World. Many believe St. Pierre is the future of the welterweight division. But, St. Pierre wants to show the world the future is now.

The RING OF FIRE UFC 65 Party will again be at it's new location. For the past three years all the ROF-UFC ppv events have been held at Red & Jerrys. ROF was informed recently that Red & Jerrys will now expect MMA fans to pay a cover charge. ROF did not want it's fans and sponsors to have to pay a fee, so they decided to move the party to CHAMPPS SPORTS BAR located just south on Santa Fe. The UFC 65 event will be shown free of charge to all ROF/MMA fans.

About CHAMPPS:  Champps Aspen Grove offers portions to satisfy even the healthiest of appetites. Selections include everything from pasta dishes, hamburgers, steaks, wings, classic and unique sandwiches and much more. It's hard not to find something for everybody with Champps huge, 100 + item menu. After years of having huge Bronco parties, Champps is excited to have ROF-MMA fans in the house. The facility is equipped with stadium seating, two video walls, and 50" plasma TV's throughout the building. There isn't a bad seat in the house.

SHOWTIME TO TELEVISE MIXED MARTIAL ARTS EVENTS

11-14-2006
NEW YORK

New MMA Organization Pro Elite, Inc. Goes Head-to-Head with Ultimate Fighting Championship

In a landmark deal for premium television, Showtime Networks Inc. has partnered with Pro Elite, Inc. to televise live mixed martial arts (MMA) events on SHOWTIME beginning in 2007, it was announced today by Ken Hershman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Sports and Event Programming, Showtime Networks.

The first event will air live on SHOWTIME on February 10, 2007, with additional events airing on the premium television network through 2009. All MMA events on SHOWTIME will be televised in high-definition.

Pro Elite, Inc. is headed by an impressive team of successful entertainment producers, event promoters and new media/internet visionaries. CEO and entertainment executive, Douglas DeLuca (Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Man Show), and the President of the live event division, Gary Shaw, will promote the televised events with Rumble World Entertainment’s President and CEO Jay Dee Penn , a black-belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a veteran promoter in the field of mixed martial arts.

Mixed martial arts is a sport evolved from a number of ancient combat disciplines including Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Wrestling and Kickboxing. A competition unlike any other, world-class athletes engage in hand-to-hand combat in a ring—both caged and traditional—and must adapt their fighting style to fit their opponent. The wide variety of styles and techniques make every event an unpredictable and exciting spectacle.

The intense nature of the contests and the theatrical elements that accompany the live experience have made MMA one of the fastest growing spectator sports in the U.S. In the past three years, the genre has seen exponential growth in popularity, particularly from the coveted male 18-34 demographic. MMA is sanctioned as a sport in more than 20 states with others expected to soon follow.

“Having seen the great success of Ultimate Fighting Championship on basic cable and pay-per-view, we knew that this programming held great potential for Showtime,” said Hershman. “MMA is a global phenomenon that is impossible to ignore. This will be the perfect complement to our boxing franchise and we are proud to be the first premium network to embrace it. We can’t wait to deliver these action-packed events to our subscribers.”

“I’ve been in and around the boxing business for a long time,” said Shaw, who will oversee Pro Elite’s live event promotions. “The energy and the excitement that mixed martial arts events generate throughout the country and on television are astounding. Personally, and on behalf of Pro Elite, I am thrilled to be entering this sport with the exceptional team of professionals at Showtime.”

DeLuca has an extremely diverse background encompassing over sixteen years of experience producing feature films, television series and special events around the world including ABC’s hit †late night program Jimmy Kimmel Live and hit reality show The Mole. Shaw, in addition to his role at Pro Elite, is also the president and CEO of Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, one of the country’s leading boxing promotion companies. Formerly, Shaw was the Chief Inspector for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Commission and a member of the commission’s board, and the Chief Operating Officer of Main Events, another boxing promotional company.

“MMA is the sport for a new generation,” added DeLuca. “The participants in MMA are some of the most dedicated and skilled athletes in the world. Our aim is to shape and nurture the core values of extreme martial arts and deliver it on multiple platforms to the fans and the athletes alike. Partnering with Showtime, a true leader in televised boxing is an ideal situation for Pro Elite and all of MMA. Together, we will help this sport flourish and grow.”

“Rumble World Entertainment is a family owned and operated business,” said Penn, a lifelong martial artist. “And we’ve seen our events and MMA in general grow like wildfire over the past few years. Our team has been committed to identifying and partnering with the right company and television network to turn our dream into a reality. Today, we have truly realized that dream.”

Chairman of the Board for Pro Elite, David Marshall, who is also Founder and Vice Chairman of Youbet.com (NASDAQ: UBET), one of the largest providers of technology and pari-mutuel horse racing content for sports enthusiasts through Internet and telephone wagering platforms, and also one of the largest broadcasters of live audio and video on the Internet, stated: “Mixed martial arts is not only the fastest growing spectator sport in the world, but also has perhaps the most passionate fans. This unique partnership with Showtime will revolutionize the sport by providing fans with enormous interactive benefits while creating the leading destination for Mixed Martial Arts on television.”

PETE SPRATT returns to SPIKE TV

11-10-2006

Denver, Colorado

UFC Welterweight fighter Pete Spratt had the following comments about Saturday night's fight against fellow TUF 4 cast member Jeremy Jackson:

"For this fight I trained in Boston with Mark Dellagrotti at Team Sityodtong Muay Thai. I decided to hook up with Kru Mark because we hit it off on TUF 4. We have the same Sityodtong bloodline from my years of training with Saekson Janjira who is out of the same camp. I consider Kru Mark my senior due to our similar Muay Thai backgrounds. His style of preparation compliments my style and he understood exactly what I needed to prepare for this fight. Not to mention, there are several Jui-Jitsu black belts on staff and a gang of unselfish and willing training partners."

"Also, my TUF 4 cast mate and teammate on TUF Jorge Rivera was training as well as getting help from TUF 1 star Kenny Florian. Training camp has been great and I am getting the utmost respect and fellowship from the guys. This was a great experience for me and I look forward to my future affiliation with Sityodtong Muay Thai!"

"Finally the UFC has given me an opponent that is willing to bang in Jeremy Jackson. We became friends in the short time that he was on the show and have stayed in touch every since. I look forward to an exciting fight and a second coming of my career. See you in vegas!"

IFL NAMES KEN SHAMROCK COACH OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TEAM
11-5-2006
NEW YORK

The International Fight League (IFL) today announced that MMA legend Ken Shamrock has been named as coach of the Northern California-based Lions. The addition of the Lions brings to 11 the number of teams for 2007, with one more to be added shortly. The inaugural IFL season will begin in the first quarter of 2007.

“This is a great day for the IFL and for fans of Mixed Martial Arts in general,” said IFL co-founder and commissioner Kurt Otto. “We have been able to bring one of the sports greatest personalities and champions in Ken Shamrock to our organization.”

“I am very proud to be joining the IFL, and believe fully in the concept as a big part of the future growth of the sport,” Shamrock said. “The athletes in this sport are some of the best in the world, and I am looking forward to working with the organization to take MMA to the next level and help create the game’s next stars.”

Originally one of the most popular members of the WWE, Shamrock has enjoyed a 13 year career in MMA and wrestling that has made him one of the fight world’s most recognizable personalities. He has been an MMA trailblazer, beginning in 1993 with the launch of Pancrase in Japan, and quickly emerged as one of the sports early stars. He brought that star power back to the United States, joining the original UFC group to participate in the first-ever “Superfight” (with Royce Gracie in 1993), and went on to become a star of the highly-acclaimed series “The Ultimate Fighter” on Spike TV. He also began his highly successful coaching and training career, founding the Lion's Den, a group dedicated to the training of mixed martial arts fighters. Shamrock returned to professional wrestling during it’s late 1990s success as well, competing in some of the biggest WWE cards ever before returning to MMA again in 2000. He competed first in PRIDE before retuning to the UFC in November of 2002. In late November of 2005, he was selected by the UFC as a coach for the third season of The Ultimate Fighter and has enjoyed great success as an author, competitor and coach over the last nine years.. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2004.

LUDWIG GETS TO FLY LIKE A BIRD....
11-2-2006

Denver, Colorado

by Michael Afromowitz

Like many of his colleagues, K-1 and mixed martial arts star, Duane “Bang” Ludwig, holds an intense passion for the extreme that extends beyond combat in the squared circle or the cage. Recently, the 28- year-old took advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity to test his physical and mental limits while soaring through the air in superhuman fashion.

On Tuesday, October 24th, Ludwig spent approximately 40 minutes seated inside the cockpit of an airborne United States Airforce Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon jet that rolled, looped and performed assorted other mesmerizing maneuvers while exploring the skies of Las Vegas, Nevada at an altitude of roughly 12,000 feet. The flight, which reached speeds in excess of 774 miles per hour, the speed of sound, came as part of an invitation the world Muay Thai champion had received from the staff at Las Vegas’ Nellis Air Force Base, the home of elite pilot demonstration squad, The Thunderbirds.

“Just experiencing all the power the jet has and to see all the team work and the precision that goes into being a pilot – it takes a lot of people to actually get that jet going – it was something I never knew,” said Ludwig. “I have a lot more respect now for the pilots themselves. There’s a lot more going on than I thought as far as the teamwork and the dedication. It’s just like how people don’t realize all the training fighters do. They think that we just go in the ring and fight for three, five-minute rounds and that’s it. There’s loads of preparation that goes into a fight.”

Ironically, the Denver, Colorado native described his flight which, for the most part, spanned the mountains of Death Valley, as a serene experience conducive to meditation rather than a nerve- wracking episode that one might imagine would unfold while participating in such an intense activity for the first time.

“Just to be able to move so freely, it kind of felt like being a bird, even though you’re strapped into the seat,” said Ludwig, who was given his tour through the sky by Major Nicole Malachowski, the first female demonstration pilot in the history of any major demonstration team in The United States. “Nothing mattered up there. You’re all alone. It’s really weird in a way.”

For Ludwig, the biggest surprise of the trip was his encounter with gravitational force, more commonly referred to as “g-force.” Gauged in numerical units, g- force is a measure of pressure being placed against a given object. One g is equivalent to the weight of the human body and is the amount of pressure an individual faces while in a normal sitting position. During the excursion, Ludwig endured as much as five g’s, or five times his body weight, being pressed against him.

“Every area of your body is just being compressed down. It’s amazing to feel that,” described the fighter. “I never even really thought about it. You see pilots in movies and it looks like they’re just flying around and they look like nothing’s happening to them, like no g-force is affecting them. But when they’re actually flying, they’re getting crushed down and it’s amazing that they can still

Gladiadores del UFC™

11-1-2006
LOS ANGELES

Breaking new ground in U.S. Hispanic programming, Fox Sports en Espanola, the leading Spanish-language sports cable network and the second most-watched Spanish-language cable network overall, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship® today announced a historic agreement to bring the world’s leading brand of professional mixed martial arts sports events to Spanish-language television for the first time ever. The exclusive one-year deal includes Spanish-language television and video on demand rights to “Gladiadores del UFC™,” a series of six one-hour UFC® fight specials that will air over the course of six months.

“Gladiadores del UFC” joins Fox Sports en Español’s newly created, two-hour “Friday Fight Night” block that also includes “Lucha Libre,” “Boxeo de Campeones,” and “Kick Boxing.” Long-time UFC and Fox Sports en Español collaborator Tony Rivera and former boxer Genaro Hernández will provide Spanish-language commentary for all “Gladiadores del UFC” telecasts.

Premiering on November 3 at 11:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. PT, the first episode of “Gladiadores del UFC” features the top fighters from the UFC's most competitive weight class, the welterweights. Former UFC welterweight champion BJ Penn kicks things off with perhaps his most explosive performance ever when he faces Caol Uno in a bout from UFC 34 that took place back when 'The Prodigy' was tearing through the lightweight division. Next, Canada's Georges St. Pierre cements his number one contender status at UFC 56 when he squares off against current lightweight champion Sean Sherk, and then two of the division's young guns, Diego Sanchez and Nick Diaz, clash in a grudge match that lives up to all expectations. In the first episode's main event, UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes battles longtime rival Frank Trigg at UFC 52 in a bout many have dubbed the greatest welterweight match in mixed martial arts history.

“We are delighted to team up with UFC on this exciting new series,” said David Sternberg, executive vice president and general manager of Fox Sports en Español. “Our viewers are huge fans of combat sports and we are confident that ‘Gladiadores del UFC’ will be a very popular addition to our programming lineup.”

Each installment of “Gladiadores del UFC” will also be available to Hispanic digital cable subscribers throughout the United States as part of Comcast's On Demand en español service. Refreshing each month, UFC programming will be included among the 10 hours of video on demand programming Fox Sports en Español already offers. The service is available at no additional charge and is a companion VOD service that complements Comcast's CableLatino and Selecto Hispanic line-up.

“We are pleased to work with Fox Sports en Español to bring the Ultimate Fighting Championship to its millions of Spanish-language viewers around the country,” said Dana White, UFC President. “We are looking forward to launching ‘Gladiadores del UFC’ and to introducing the world’s most exciting brand of professional mixed martial arts – the UFC – to sport fans watching Fox Sports en Español.”
