ACF - More bad news

Ken Pishna......out

Just to let everyone know, I have resigned my position as Director of MMA Relations at American Championship Fighting (ACF) effective
immediately. The company and it's leadership are headed in a direction that I am not comfortable with, which lead me to the conclusion that it would be best for all parties involved if I no longer represent the ACF.

Anyone interested can still reach me at: KenPishna@earthlink.net or 303-916-6091. I am still available to respond to your questions or concerns, but am no longer acting in any official capacity for the ACF.

Sincerely,
Ken Pishna

Commentary:

Smart move Ken. It takes guts to do what's right.

Colorado has recently become home to several ethically challenged fight promoters.  Some with serious criminal backgrounds.  Contrary to the spin put forth by their front-men, these wannabe mobsters, accused swindlers and convicted felons have no place promoting what are supposed to be legitimate sporting contests.  Already their shows have featured worked (fixed, faked) fights.  Already they have used the audience as a source of fighters, going so far as to take people from the stands to fill in for last minute fighter no-shows.  Already they have sold tickets for big name fights that mysteriously never took place.  They have even employed the most notorious of worked-fighter as a part of their official event staff.  The list of improprieties goes on and on.

What message does this send to the fans?  This sport barely survived the blood-sport/spectacle era and now we are faced with an influx of grifters looking for new marks.  Must we go the way of boxing?  Why do so many upcoming fighters, trainers, managers, announcers and others who should know better continue to support these events?

If you are concerned about the legitimacy and continued growth of Colorado's mixed martial arts, please give thought to where your dollars are spent.  Tell the Colorado Boxing Commission to take a tougher stand regarding who is given a promoter's license.  Above all, support those who really are supporting the sport.

Not sure about a promoter? Do a quick internet search by typing that promoter's name into  Yahoo or GoggleYou might be surprised at what turns up.

To the fans, fighters, trainers, managers, announcers and event staff members, remember what fraud expert B. Branscum has to say:

"Swindlers and grifters are opportunistic sociopaths who prey upon the trust and gullibility of others, feeling nobody’s pain in the process. On the other hand, these people live by their wits, and it would be foolish to underestimate them. Morally reprehensible and devoid of compassion as they may be, they tend to be intelligent, practical and devious.

Con artists do what they do for the money, they are businessmen, and they tend to behave rationally. Some have little formal education, but they are all experts in human behavior who have mastered the art of persuasion. They use words as the instruments of deception, and they recognize pleas and/or threats as the manifestations of desperation. Trying to beg, bluff or intimidate a professional swindler is a complete waste of time and energy."

ROYCE GRACIE - Thank you for your support

5-29-2006

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, CO

I would like to thank all the fans that were supporting me for this fight against Matt Hughes. I want to thank 15,000 plus fans that showed up at the Staples Center and really made me feel welcome and the hundreds of thousands that purchased the PPV. I am very disappointed in the outcome of the fight. I did not train for a fight like that and want to apologize to the fans who expected more. Matt Hughes is a great champion and he was the better man that night, I give him all the credit. He was very humble in his victory and that shows a true champion.

I am going to take a little time off from training and spend with the family. BUT I WILL BE BACK TO FIGHTING BEFORE THEN END OF THE YEAR.

Thank you again for your support

Royce Gracie

ROF 24 - Tickets on sale!!!

5-24-2006

Denver, Colorado

XYIENCE presents ROF 24: INTEGRITY..

Tickets for the next RING OF FIRE event are now on sale. The June 17th event is the 24th installment for the promotion and is using the name INTEGRITY for the show.

"There has been quite a focus on MMA in Colorado lately, specifically on the promotions and the people behind them. I chose the title INTEGRITY for this show, as it just seemed to sum up what ROF is all about in this competitive climate. There are quite a few promotions in the area now. More than one seem to be making headlines with frauds, scams, and high profile legal problems.  Everything but MMA. Someone said that there is no such thing as bad publicity, but when it comes to MMA I don't think that is true. I think negative press can have disastrous effects on the sport as a whole" said promoter Sven Bean.

"ROF is and always will be about the sport and the athletes. I want the fans to know that they can count on ROF as a great event to come watch the best the area has to offer in combat sports. I want them to know that when they come to the venue they will get exactly what they paid for. High level, well matched, professionally presented MMA matches. It is what I have been doing since day one, and will continue to do so for a long time to come"

The main event for ROF 24: INTEGRITY features the return of one of the sport's best grapplers, Jay Jack. Jack was recently promoted to black belt in BJJ, and has a 12-5 MMA record. His last ROF appearance saw him fall to ROF Welter Weight Champion Thomas Schulte, but he has gone 2-0 since that fight finishing both his opponents with submissions. Facing off against Jack is one of the fastest rising stars of the midwest, Chad Reiner. Reiner is one of the best conditioned athletes in the game and holds an 11-1 record. The versatile fighter has just enough of everything in his arsenal to be a threat. Just enough wrestling, just enough striking, just enough submissions. Just enough to make a complete MMA fighter. At stakes in this match will be the number one ranking at welter weight with the winner guaranteed a shot at Schulte's belt in the fall.

The full card will be released soon, but features some of the best promotion's top athletes. Knock Out artist Donald COWBOY Cerrone returns to ROF hoping to add to his undefeted MMA record. 2005 Pan American JiuJitsu Champion Eliot Marshall will make his professional debut at light heavyweight. The hard hitting Chrissane BRICKHOUSE Roseliep will appear under K-1 rules.

One of the feature matches on the card will be a professional Muay Thai match in the women's division as Sarah Ponce (TX) faces Angela Hayes (CO). Ponce is known as much for her fighting prowess as she is for her modeling accolades. She is the 2003 Swimsuit Model of the year as well as the 2004 IKF National Champion. Angela Hayes is a fourth degree black belt, multiple Karate Champion and a veteran of Chuck Norris' World Combat League.

ACF PRESS RELEASE - VECC CONTINUES AS AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHTING CEO

American Championship Fighting(sm) Chief Executive Officer Rico Vecc (a.k.a. Rico Vecchiarelli) appeared before Denver District Court Friday, to face sentencing for conduct stemming from a previous real estate venture.  Vecc assumed responsibility for one count of securities fraud he incurred while engaging in a joint venture with business partner Sean Zweifel more than a year ago. The District Court judge decided that, with full restitution, Vecc would receive a 4-year sentence with immediate eligibility for a work-release program.

I made some mistakes that resulted in legal charges. I accept personal responsibility for this and now I have to deal with the consequences.  ACF had nothing to do with this; it is a completely separate matter, stated Vecc.

Vecc remains committed to ACF(sm) and will continue to support the company as its CEO. I want to reassure MMA fans that this in no way affects the operations of the ACF. American Championship Fighting was built from the ground up as a team effort from day one. It is not all about Rico Vecc. There are a lot of great people at the ACF that will ensure that the company will continue to thrive.

The ACF(sm) is a completely separate entity from Vecc's previous real estate venture that resulted in the current legal situation. Apart from his involvement with both companies, neither business has anything to do with the other.

ACF(sm) President Josh Sylva will continue to manage ACF(sm) operations especially as the company works to finalize details for its July 15 show to be held at a venue to be determined. The July card is already slated to feature a title bout between current ACF(sm) welterweight champion John Cronk and top contender Donnie Liles, the debut of Wes Sims in the Ocho(sm), lightweight contender Dennis Davis? return against Omaha's Justin James, highly regarded middleweight Chilo Gonzalez, and more.

We know that this situation does not come across well with MMA fans, remarked Sylva, but there are a lot of people involved in this company that have worked long and hard towards making the ACF a success. That is not about to change, in fact, we are ready to redouble our efforts to take the ACF to the top of the MMA world.?

ACF -  Accused Colorado conman and swindler goes to slammer

One down one to go

5-16-2006

Denver, Colorado

Attorney General John Suthers and Securities Commissioner Fred Joseph announced today the arrest of ACF President Rico Vecchiarelli (a.k.a. Rico Vecc) following his indictment on July 22, 2005, by the State Grand Jury and the subsequent issuance of an arrest warrant on the same date by the Denver District Court. Vecchiarelli’s accomplice, Sean Zweifel, age 30, was also indicted but has not yet been arrested.

"These defendants are accused of swindling Colorado investors out of thousands of dollars," said Attorney General Suthers. "This indictment sends a message to would be criminals that we will not tolerate securities fraud of any type."

The State Grand Jury indicted Vecchiarelli and Zweifel on six counts of securities fraud and one count of theft, all class 3 felonies. According to the indictment, the two men made fraudulent sales of securities to Colorado investors by offering them investments in Vecchiarelli’s company, Infinity Investment Properties, LLC, for the purpose of financing the purchases of residential property.

Vecchiarelli allegedly induced investors by making promises of substantial rates of return on short-term investments of as little as 60 days. Vecchiarelli allegedly represented that he and his company owned a significant inventory of residential properties. It is further alleged that Vecchiarelli then diverted significant portions of the funds for his own personal use.

Five alleged victims from Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, and Jefferson Counties with losses over $150,000 have been identified so far.

Commissioner Joseph said, "This case shows that protecting Colorado investors is our No. 1 priority regardless of the dollar amount of the investment."

Vecchiarelli is currently being held in Douglas County jail. His bond is set at $100,000.

As with all persons charged with a criminal offense, Vecchiarelli and Zweifel are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

WFA - Press Release

5-15-2006

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, Colorado

The World Fighting Alliance (WFA) was officially reborn today as a “fighter-first” association featuring the world’s toughest mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes. The announcement coincided with the WFA’s signing of international MMA superstar Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, the man who destroyed reigning UFC light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, ending months of speculation about which association Jackson would call home. The WFA also announced its inaugural event, “WFA: King of the Streets” to be held July 22nd at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.

The WFA is designed to be the world’s premier professional Mixed Martial Arts association, providing fans, sponsors and the media with an incomparable entertainment experience. As a “fighter-first” association, the WFA will showcase its athletes’ skills and personalities to the sport’s growing legions of fans through compelling match-ups, in-depth interviews and features highlighting the twisted roads and difficult paths that have led them to the pinnacle of the MMA world.

“As mixed martial arts continues to evolve into a mainstream global sports and entertainment attraction, it’s critical that we preserve the competitive balance and integrity of the sport, while continually upgrading the entertainment experience for consumers,” said Jeremy Lappen, CEO of the WFA. “To date, other organizations have not done a very good job of developing and marketing their fighters. The WFA, however, is founded on the belief that it’s the fighters, their unique stories, and the rivalries and drama between them that will take the sport to even greater levels of success.”

Those stories, rivalries and the drama that follows will be showcased at the inaugural “WFA: King of the Streets” event taking place on July 22nd at The Forum, a historic venue rich in fighting history. Located in the heart of Inglewood, Calif., the venue provides an appropriate urban setting to kick off the WFA’s street-brand of MMA entertainment.

“For so many of our fighters, the hardships of the streets demanded physical dominance as a matter of pure survival. They come from rough and humble beginnings, but the commitment to training and developing their MMA fighting skills is what got them off of the streets,” said Lappen. “The WFA celebrates the street origins of our sport and what better place to pay respect to our edgy roots then in the heart of Los Angeles at the historic Forum.”

In addition to “Rampage” Jackson, the WFA’s star-studded lineup of fighters includes:

Street fighting legend and former UFC superstar heavyweight Kimo Leopoldo
The undefeated Brazilian Lyoto Machida, the only man to beat UFC Champion Rich Franklin (he ko’d him), and whose career record also includes victories over stars BJ Penn and Stephen Bonnar
Former boxing star Jeremy “Half-Man, Half-Amazing” Williams who’s crossing over into the MMA realm after a stint as one of the featured trainers on ESPN’s popular boxing reality show The Contender
Jason “Mayhem” Miller, one of the sport’s most exciting young fighters and a self-made internet celebrity whose fan club, the “Mayhem’s Monkeys” comprises thousands of rabid MMA fans.
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Ricco Rodriguez who looks to regain his crown as the top fighter in the world.
World-class kick boxer-turned MMA competitor Kit Cope looks to finally establish himself as a legitimate force in the cage in the WFA.
The official fight card for “WFA: King of the Streets” features a “who’s who” of established MMA stars, now fighting under the WFA banner. The WFA sought to present the most intense head-to-head match-ups possible, loaded with significant history and animosity between scheduled opponents. The result will be one of the most action-packed and controversial fight cards in MMA history.

Following is a breakdown of the WFA King of the Streets bouts confirmed to date.” The complete fight card will be announced in the days to come once all match-ups become official:

Quinton Jackson (24-6-0) vs Matt Lindland (18-3-0)

After a highly-touted five-year fight career in Japan, one of MMA’s most popular fighters is reborn in North America with the arrival of the WFA. Jackson takes on former Olympic silver medal-winning wrestler-turned submission specialist Matt Lindland. Lindland, the former #1 contender at 185 lbs, has moved up to the 205 lb. weight class and recently scored an impressive first round submission win against Mike Van Arsdale.

Ricco Rodriguez (22-6-0) vs Ron Waterman (13-3-2)

Following a lengthy absence, this former UFC heavyweight champion makes a highly anticipated return to the cage in a battle against long-time rival Ron Waterman, who defeated Rodriquez in their only match prior to “WFA: King of the Streets.” Rodriguez will enter this bout looking to not only settle unfinished business with Waterman, but to reestablish him as a force to be reckoned with in the sport.

Lyoto Machida (7-0-0) vs Vernon White (24-27-2)

This bout features one of MMA’s brightest new stars against one of its most respected veterans. With one of the most impressive winning streaks in MMA, Machida, an undefeated knockout specialist with victories over top stars Rich Franklin, BJ Penn, and Stephan Bonnar looks to establish himself in the WFA by going head to head with the “Tiger.” White has shown impressive hands of late, knocking out his last two opponents, and a victory over this young prodigy would go far in refuting those who believe his best days are behind him.

Ivan Salaverry (11-4-0) vs Art Santore (14-4-0)

This bout pits two of the sport’s most technically sound fighters against each other. MMA veteran Salaverry is used to competing with top talent on a daily basis, having come out of the AMC Pankration camp of Bob Sapp and Josh Barnett. For Santore this fight against the proven Salaverry represents one of his biggest challenges to date. However, on the heels of capturing the UMMA World Middleweight title, Santore looks to continue his steady rise to MMA prominence with a victory at WFA King of the Streets.

Kimo Leopoldo (9-5-1) vs Opponent TBD

After a successful career establishing himself as one of the sport’s most dynamic and imposing forces, defeating such notable MMA stars as Tank Abbott, Bam Bam Bigelow and Kazushi Sakuraba, Kimo overcame his biggest battle against drugs and alcohol. The born-again Christian now backed by faith, intends to return to a position of dominance in MMA, beginning with “WFA: King of the Streets.” His opponent will be announced in the days to come.

Rob McCullough (11-3-0) vs Opponent TBD

Following a successful kick boxing career that earned him a reputation as a dominant lightweight striker, McCullough has made a successful transition into MMA. The O.C. local looks to take his career to the next level fighting for the WFA. His opponent will be announced in the days to come.

Jason Miller (14-4-0) vs. Opponent TBD

Jason “Mayhem” Miller brings his trademark wild style as the still-reigning Icon Sport Welterweight champion. The wily submission expert has made huge strides in MMA over the past several years and is determined to establish a legacy of dominance in the WFA with his outrageous and aggressive style.

Tickets for “WFA: King of the Streets” at The Forum went on sale this afternoon and are available at all Southern California Ticket Master outlets (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino and Ventura Counties), online at Ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at (213) 480-3232, (714) 740-2000, (661) 322-2525 or (805) 583-8700.

The event will also be shown live on pay-per-view television (details to be announced in the days to come).

Intimidating forces like Jackson will have significant input into the way they are marketed, providing fans with the greatest access ever to their favorite athletes.

“When Jeremy (Lappen) shared his vision for the WFA with me, it was clear that this was an organization committed to its fighters and to consistently putting the highest level of MMA talent in the cage for the fans,” said Jackson. “The decision was easy for me. The WFA is going to take this sport to an even higher level of competition and entertainment and I wanted to be a part of that.”

The WFA’s management and ownership group includes Lappen, Las Vegas attorneys Ross Goodman and Louis Palazzo, and retired businessman William McFarlane. The WFA has been reborn through the team after a six-year hiatus. The commitment to working in tandem with the fighters is fueling the rebirth and attracting many of the sport’s most recognizable names.

The IFL's first event, which recently took place on April 29 at the Trump Taj Mahal, featured fast-paced action, with nine out of 11 fights ending in a KO or submission. In addition to the Silverbacks and Tigersharks, also fighting were the IFL’s Pitbulls, led by Renzo Gracie and the Anacondas, coached by Bas Rutten. Those teams, along with the upcoming action taking place June 3, will be televised as three distinct broadcasts on Fox Sports Net on May 21, May 28 and June 5 at 6pm local time. The televised shows are produced and directed by Emmy award-winning producer Peter Lasser, who has worked on several Olympic telecasts as well as with ESPN, NBC Sports, NFL Films and FSN, among others.

Officially announced in January 2006, the International Fight League is the brainchild of Kurt Otto and Gareb Shamus. The avid, business-minded executives have created a stir by introducing the team-based concept and a more regulated approach to the aggressive sport. The team concept, which truly sets the IFL apart from other MMA organizations, mirrors national sports leagues such as the NFL and NBA and allows MMA, the combination of jiu-jitsu, karate, judo, kick-boxing, wrestling, and boxing to reach a broader audience.

SMASHING MACHINE out of A.C.F.

5-7-2006

Denver, Colorado

Mark Kerr's much hyped return to the ring at Rico Vecchiarelli-McLaughlin's (a.k.a.Rico Vecc) A.C.F. show in Denver never happened.  Kerr was supposedly forced-out because of a last minute hand injury.  Unfortunately for ticket buying fans, this news was never revealed until show time.

Conveniently, Kerr's recent deal with the International Fighting League should offset the monetary losses he suffered by not fighting on the ACF show.

MMA Report

Kerr's trainers made these comments about his failure to fight.

S. M. - "Mark trained at my gym (Grappler's Edge) for this fight, and I was there last night to corner him.

Chad K's story is true. Mark informed the ACF about his hand when it happened. Mark still wanted to fight (of course), so he got treatment and cortisone shots, but it didn't help.

The ACF knew about Mark's hand, but waited until the last minute because either they were hoping for the best (a miracle), or they didn't want to disrupt the ticket sales (you decide). Mark couldn't even make a fist during the Dr. physicals, so there was no way they were going to clear him.

Chad K. -  "Cindy, I don't know what the ACF officials told you (I wasn't there), but I'm sure they had a good story. On the other hand, you weren't in our dressing room either, so all I can tell you is that you were misinformed.

Things weren't handled well last night (by the ACF), and I'm sorry for the fighters and the fans. Mark may not be as big or as young as he once was, but he's still a warrior. If healthy last night, he would have fought, and he would have won!"

Cindy, you talked to the ACF folks, but I was in that dressing room. The same officials who got 2 other Doctors to come back in hopes of overriding their 1st Doctor's opinion? This after Mark sat in my living room (while posting under my screen name earlier in the week no less) and told these same people what the doctor had said about his hand?

The same officials who suggested that Mark go out, throw a punch, then clutch his hand and fall to his knees in pain. Then said they'd set up a rematch after his hand healed? The same one's who told us that Wes said "this" while telling Wes and Coleman that Kerr said "that"? (Wont go into too much detail but you would be hard pressed to imagine worse than what was said)

Unfortunately, I didn't have a tape recorder with me. Somehow, I forgot to throw it in my corner bag along with the mitts, vaseline, endswell and other items I brought to the arena."

MMAFighting reporter Cindy O. had these comments -  "It's a freakin' mess, I can tell you that.

Here are the "facts" as they have been presented to me. I'm not making a judgement either way because in my opinion, both sides could very well be equally in the wrong.

Allegations appear to be strong that both sides may have mislead the public. The ordeal was out of my hands before I concluded my last interview. Apparently, I was not the only one with questions.

1) Mark knew he wasn't prepared to fight Wes so he used the injury as an excuse.
2) Mark was the one who insisted on checking with multiple doctors in order to find one who would deem him unfit to compete.
3) Mark was given the option of fighting or not (injury was marginal) and he decided to "pass."
4) Mark reported the injury earlier and agreed to go along with the ACF's cover up so as not to impede ticket sales.
5) Mark backed out of the fight because he is not "clean" and knew he would fail any post fight testing.
6) Mark "broke his hand" over a week ago, yet showed no signs of injury, taping or swelling in IFL event photos.
7) Mark continued training before the fight w/o signs of significant injury to his hand which occured "about a week ago" during a training session.
8) Mark is blowing the injury waaaay out of proportion and could have competed if he wanted to.
9) Rico was made aware of the injury well in advance to have notified the public, but chose not to... and convinced Mark to play along with the scheme.
10) Rico and other ACF officials were witnessed discussing the "scheme" backstage as to how the "story" would be told to the spectators at the event.
11) Mark, his "people," ACF officials and management, at least one CO State Athletic Commission employee, Wes and Mark Coleman discussed how the news would be broken and how to "pump" the crowd for a rematch, hence the WWE display in the cage.
12) Mark lied, pulled out and pissed Rico off enough to cause him to give Wes the belt.
13) Mark really didn't care because he found out his IFL contract, which Rico claims to know nothing about, is in conflict with his existing ACF contract and being "released" by Rico for cause would eliminate the issue.
14) Mark failed to inform the IFL he is under contract with the ACF, yet accepted their coaching position and has begun actively recruiting new fighters. Contract conflict(s) abound.
15) The ACF is throwing Mark "under the bus" because he has proven to be unreliable with keeping PR commitments necessary for the company "poster child" in order for Rico to recoup his investment in Kerr.
16) If the ACF finds out Mark has been "dishonest," they can release him from his contract and save face with the spectators. Blame would be on him, not the ACF.

There are a bunch more... no one had the same story. Again, these are not my suspicions, they are allegations and comments made by folks who were supposedly involved or had knowledge from behind the scenes. "

FIGHTER blasts Denver fight promoter

5-4-2006

Denver, Colorado

"This is going to be long...sorry. But it is worth reading. The promoter that screwed me over...is the same promoter promoting the Mark Kerr Vs. Wes Sims fight. He was just recently arrested for fraud. If you don't feel like reading this whole thing....TTT it so other fighters will hear about this organization.

As many of you may know...I have not fought since 7/23/2005. On that date I beat one of Denver Colorado's top prospects. Donnie Liles who had a combined Amateur and Pro record of 19-0.  After beating Donnie Liles I was approached by a new fight organization. American Fighting Championships. (www.theacf.net) The show is promoted by a guy named Rico Vecc a.k.a. Rico Vecchiarelli-McLaughlin.

The promoter flew me from Phoenix Arizona to Denver Colorado. He took me out to eat at several of the "high end" restraints in town. It felt almost like a recruiting trip for a Blue Chip High School athlete. Rico explained to me that he had great ideas of a new fight promotion. He wanted to have the fighters signed to contracts and provide them with Health Insurance and other benefits. Rico said that the promotion wasn't looking for "stars"...that they were looking to build their own fighters and that he wanted to build a strong fan base in the Denver area before moving the show to the national spot-light.

Several days after leaving Denver Rico provided me with a "Letter of Intent". The letter of intent stated that we were to receive a base salary of $4,000 a month. (Great money that was suppose to help with training, marketing, and serve as a fight purse as well). The deal was supposed to be a 3-year 150K deal. The ACF explained to me that they were going to sign John Cronk, Chilo Gonzales, myself, and Donnie Liles to the first contracts.

We began talking about opponents and the ACF gave me a name "Steve Sniederman". I goggled the name and didn't find any information on him. They explained to be that he trained in Denver and was a member of UFC vet's Brad Gumm's school. I explained to them that I would be willing to fight the opponent...but that I would need to receive video footage of the fighter. (Obviously I'm not going to fight a fighter that I've never heard of or seen footage of). They agreed to send me footage.

During the next couple of weeks the ACF told me to go ahead and proceed as if the contracts were signed. (They said that these are 1 of a kind contract and that they were going to take several weeks to construct) One of the stipulations in the LOI stated that we could not have any sponsors, or fight for another promotion. (The ACF did not want us to be attached to other companies).

The ACF paid me my first check for January 1st eight days late... ($2,000). We were suppose to get paid on the 1st and 15th of each month. The first check they sent me was returned to me for insufficient funds. The bank continued to try and clear the check... after a 40-day hold the check cleared.  During the time it took the check to clear the ACF was scheduled to pay me twice. (Jan. 15th and Feb. 1st) I was scheduled to fight for the ACF on Feb. 24th.

Wanting to prepare for the fight I left my original training partners and began to train out of the country. I explained to the ACF that I was going to be spending most of the "salary" money on rent, car payments, cell phones...etc while I was out of the country.

While training my fiancé handled the finances. We never received funds for Jan. 15th or Feb. 1st. I arrived back state side for Valentines Day. TO MY SHOCK...upon my return my fiancé informed me that we had gone past due on our rent, car payments, and several other bills. She also informed me that I never received "promised" promotional materials. The ACF was suppose to design and print 10,000 Magicalray post card size promotional flyers and a patented Magicalray T-shirt for sales at the event. I still had not received flight itinerary (10 days out from the event) or a fight tape on my opponent.

After doing some research on a "Steve sniederman" I eventually found a Steve Schneider. The fighter however was not located in the Denver area. He actually trained with UFC vet Curtis Stout and lived in Missouri.

Feb. 16th I suffered a sever knee sprain and hamstring pull. I immediately went to the doctor and had an MRI and X-ray done on the knee. The doctor said that it wasn't "SERIOUS" but that fighting in 10 days was highly unlikely. (I was on crutches for 1st 3 days after the injury). Look at the scenario from my point of view...
*No contract
*No promotional flyers or T-shirts
*I had been paid $2,000's almost a month late
*The ACF owed me $4,000 (the total would be $6,000 on the 20th of Feb)
*No fight tape (that was promised) of an opponent that I knew little info about
*No flight itinerary
They never gave me a "fight weight" (I emailed 9 times asking them if we were fighting at 170 or 185lbs). I was injured. (If it were a UFC or Pride fight I would have competed but with the scenario it was too much of a risk).

I decided that fighting on the card was not in my best interest. I pulled out of my scheduled fight. After pulling out of the match I contacted the ACF and informed them that I signed "information release forms" with my doctors...and that they could contact them directly for verification of the injury. I also explained to them that I would be willing to get examined by a doctor in the Denver area for a second opinion.

Another contracted fighter...Donnie Liles was injured at the same time. He was not scheduled to fight on the Feb. 24th card...but was still getting paid. They told me not to worry about the injury and to get healthy.

Rico promised to "square up" with me when I got to Denver *he would owe me $6,000 by that date excluding another $1,000's that I incurred in late fees and over draft expenses due to his "unorganization". (The ACF told me that the miss funds were due to the show experiencing growing pains...and the rigors of planning their debut show)

I finally received my flight itinerary THE DAY BEFORE THE SHOW. When I received my flight info...It was discovered that I was not going to arrive into Denver until MIDNIGHT~ the day of the show (missing the fights and my chance to collect the money they owed me). I changed my flight itinerary without telling Rico and simply "showed up in Denver". Visibly startled Rico fumbled through several excuses before eventually giving me $4,000 in cash. I presented him with over $1,000's in receipts for late fees and over draft costs. Rico explained to me that he would reimburse me for those charges, give me the additional $2,000 he owed me and take care of my medical costs after the show.

The show ended and Rico was NO WHERE to be found. Returning to the hotel still being owed $3,000. I didn't know what to do. I called Rico in the morning and his phone was shut off (supposedly in a meeting with Mark Kerr and Wes Sims). Eventually time passed and I needed to get to the airport. After calling the ACF's director of fighter relations I was told to pay for a cab ride to the airport and Rico would reimburse me for the cost. (Of course I demanded a ride...and eventually someone showed up and literally dropped me off at the curb as they were calling my flight to board)

The following Monday after returning home I received a phone call from a guy named Josh. He informed me that he was the "new" CEO of the show and that the "growing pains" were going to stop.  Josh also explained that the ACF had worries that my injury wasn't "Legit". I explained to him that not only was the injury "Legit"...but that I was still hurt and could visit a doctor in the Denver area. I also informed him that I signed an information release and he could obtain my doctors medical records at anytime. He continued to tell me that he still had concerns that the ACF was going to pay me thousands of dollars without me ever fighting.  Josh told me that they wanted me to Fight Donnie Liles in a rematch May 6th. He said that we would be a co-main event with Mark Kerr Vs. Wes Sims. Josh explained that he wanted to hold my monthly paychecks until the day of the fight. He explained to me that the paychecks would be paid to me as a fight purse.

The paycheck for Feb 20th was a few days late. But the check was supposed to be in the mail with my reimbursement for the late fees incurred due to the ACF's late paychecks included. I asked him why 8 weeks have passed and I still didn't have a contract. Josh informed me that I would have the contract, and "missing money" within a couple of days.

Several days later I received a contract (they told me that the fax # I gave them didn't work and that was the delay in me getting the contract...BS!!)

I was told for 4 straight days that the "check was in the mail"...I asked them for a tracking number and they informed me that the employee who mailed the check forgot to get a tracking number. The ACF also said that Bank Of America would not allow them to do a wire transfer.

While waiting for the check to arrive in the mail..I hired a lawyer to review the contract. The contract was written 95% in favor of the ACF and 5% in favor of Magicalray. Deep within the legal jargon of the contract were loop-holes that would allow the ACF to collect the funds that were paid to the fighters at anytime. Instead of being stated as a "salary" it was an "advancement of future profits recoupable at anytime". Obviously I refused to sign the contract.

Josh informed me that negotiations usually "work that way". He said that "We shoot high, you shoot high and we meet in the middle". The contract had SEVERAL points of interest that needed to be arbitrated. (EX "what would happen with Magicalray's existing sponsors?) Literally a couple of weeks out from the May 6th card I informed the ACF that getting a contract arbitrated and signed before the fight date was impossible. I informed Josh that I was still willing to fight Donnie Liles. I explained to Josh that I would be willing to fight Donnie on 6th. He agreed that the fight should happen and I continued training.

I contacted the ACF and informed them that the paydays missed total $10,000. Having had a discussion with the CEO of the company it was my impression that they were going to hold the checks for
   *Feb 20th $2,000
   *March 1st $2,000
   *March 20th $2,000
   *April 1st $2,000
   *April 20th $2,000
   *May 1st $2,000
    Grand Total $10,000
Not including legal fees for my lawyer, medical costs, late fees, airline charges, and other bills totaling an additional $5,000

The ACF informed me that $10,000 was out of their budget. I knew it was FAR ABOVE market value...but it was the money they promised me I have it documented in several emails.

The ACF paid me $6,000 total. I explained to them that I felt like I did "owe them" a fight. I told them that if $10,000 was out of their budget I would be willing to fight a different opponent other than Donnie Liles and we could agree on a new purse. The matchmaker of the ACF informed me that the card was already full and they had no room for me.

While searching for a replacement fighter the ACF contacted SEVERAL promoters, managers, and fighters. They went out of their way to give everyone a lasting impression that I was "demanding 10K for a fight" and that I was difficult to work with. The ACF tried their best to run my name through the mud! I asked the CEO of the ACF if they wished to pursue any further relationship. They literally stopped returning phone calls and emails.

I have not heard from the ACF. Because of my dealing with them I have witnessed my credit get destroyed. The late payments on my car, rent, phone where all reported to my credit report. Those derogatory remarks are going to last for 6-10 on my credit score!

Rico Vecc was recently arrested
(Colorado Dept. of Law) and is being indicted under his real name Rico Mclaughlin. I have heard the charges are for Mortgage fraud.

The ACF eventually signed Mark Kerr Vs. Wes Sims as the main event. I have heard rumors that Mark Kerr received a HOUSE as payment. Knowing how my dealing have been with them...I have to wonder if Kerr is actually going to have a place to live after his fight!

I was forced to turn down several fight offers while working with the ACF. Some of those offers included; Total Combat offering me a title fight May 13th against Erik Apple. I was contacted at during the formation of the IFL about possibly being on one of the teams. I was forced to turn down several smaller promotions and that literally cost me thousands in potential earnings. With the slander conducted by the ACF promoters in the states of NM and CO they have cost me thousands in possible future earnings. My credit score is ruined and I still have several unpaid lawyer fees (from paying them to draft me a new contract) and medical bills that are sky rocketing through the roof!

I hope the ACF loses 100,000$'s on their show this weekend! I hope that no one in the Denver area shows up to support the show. Because of the Con Artist better known as Rico Vecc I am struggling just to put food on the table. ANYBODY THAT HAS READ ALL OF THIS...I ask that you go out of your way to not support the ACF.  The promoter screwed me out of 10,000$'s over the past 6 months."

IFL's Premiere a Resounding Success.....Winning Teams Advance to Battle June 3

4-30-2006

Trump Taj Mahal,
Atlantic City, New Jersey

Estimated gate - 3000

The highly anticipated world premiere of the International Fight League™ was a resounding success, with over 3,000 excited fans cheering teams featured in the action-packed inaugural event at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. The Silverbacks and the Tigersharks both won their respective battles and will advance to face each other on June 3 at the very same venue. In a special Super Fight, lightweight Jens Pulver knocked out Cole Escovedo in the first round of their match-up.

With electricity in the air, the evening was kicked off by the Silverbacks, led by Coach Pat Miletich, taking four out of the five matches from the Bas Rutten-led Anacondas. Starting with the IFL’s first-ever fight, lightweight Bart Palaszewski (21-7-0) of the Silverbacks scored a TKO with strikes at the 1:31 point in the second round over John-David Shackelford (1-2-0). Next up was the heavyweights going toe-to-toe in a match that found the gorillas’ Ben Rothwell (17-5-0) landing his own strike-laced TKO at the end of round one over Krzysztof Soszynski (7-5-1). In the lone victory for the Anacondas, light heavyweight Alex Shoenauer (9-4-0) came from behind to defeat Travis Wiuff (40-8-0) with a heel hook at 3:23 into round two. In the middleweight match-up, the Silverbacks’ Ryan McGivern (7-1-0) restored the team’s momentum by winning a unanimous decision against Amir Rahnavardi (9-7-0). And, in perhaps the evening’s earliest shocker, Silverbacks’ welterweight Rory Markham (6-1-0) upset fan favorite Mike Pyle (11-3-1) via knockout punch 44 seconds of the first round having elapsed.

At the halfway point of the evening, the IFL presented a strong contest between two well-known fighters, pitting Jens "Little Evil" Pulver (21-6-1) against Cole "The Apache Kid" Escovedo (11-3-0). Pulver landed a knockout punch with 56 ticks into round one.

When team action resumed, it was the Renzo Gracie-led Pitbulls battling against Maurice Smith’s Tigersharks. The ‘Dogs’ lightweight Erik Owings won his first MMA battle ever by guillotine submission at the 2:50 mark in the first round over the Tigersharks’ Justin Jones (9-4-1). That match was followed by an action-packed bout between the Pitbulls’ welterweight Gustavo Machado (10-5-1) and the ‘sharks Brad Blackburn (8-7-0), and it was Blackburn who squeezed out a split decision at the end of three rounds.

An illegal upkick by the Pitbulls’ Delson Heleno (5-2-0) led to the Tigersharks’ Dennis Hallman (34-12-2) winning the middleweight fight by disqualification. Following that quick bout was the Pitbulls’ light heavyweight Jamal Patterson (1-0-0), who in his MMA debut made an early exit for the Tigersharks alternate Matt Horwich with a rear naked choke submission at 2:57 in the first round. In the heavyweight finale, the Tigersharks’ Devin Cole (5-1-0) ruined Carlos Kline (0-1-0) MMA debut by winning a unanimous decision, propelling the T-Sharks to their upcoming battle against the Silverbacks.

The IFL’s first live event had all the markings of a well-oiled and seasoned organization behind it. Ring announcer – believed to be the most conducive environment for fighters, fans and production) – Jimmy Lennon was in fine form from the start, and the night was being filmed for television. Fox Sports Net (FSN), a division of the FOX Broadcasting Company and News Corp, will nationally televise the IFL’s debut event across a series of shows that will air on May 21 and May 28 at 6pm local, as well as June 5. Peter Lasser, one of the leading athletic event producers in the country, is overseeing television production, and the IFL’s broadcast team includes "The Fight Professor" Steven Quadros handling play-by-play, color commentator Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and reporter Shannon Knapp.

The IFL also plans on finalizing a DVD distribution deal shortly and is actively seeking partners across licensing categories, including videogames, trading cards, apparel and accessories, fitness equipment and nutritional supplements.

Toronto, CAN

The Fight Network Inc. announced today that it has completed it’s acquisition of MMAWeekly.com

“We are excited about this deal,” said Mike Garrow President of The Fight Network. “MMAWeekly.com is regarded by many consumers as the number one site for mixed martial arts news and information on the web and we are very pleased to welcome it into The Fight Network family of combative sports news outlets. The Fight Network is also committed to adding additional resources to MMAWeekly in the coming months to create an even richer media experience for MMA fans worldwide.”

MMAWeekly has been available online for over four years and reports on the latest happenings in the world of mixed martial arts. MMAWeekly.com also features a daily internet radio show, hosted by Ryan Bennett and Frank Trigg, one on one video profiles, fighter rankings and user forums.

MMAWeekly has conducted hundreds of interviews over the years with a who’s who of mixed martial arts fighters such as Ken Shamrock, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, and Tito Ortiz to name but a few.

“Delivering the latest news and inside information to our fans has always been key with us here at MMAWeekly,” said Ryan Bennett co-founder of the website. “This arrangement with The Fight Network allows us to take the MMAWeekly brand to a whole new level.”

One such initiative will be the introduction of a weekly television show called MMAWeekly that will air on both The Fight Network and online in the coming months. “The time has come where the sport of MMA needs a news and information show,” said Brian Sobie, Sr. VP of Programming at Fight Network. “I have the utmost confidence in Ryan Bennett, Scott Petersen and all of the contributors to MMAWeekly and that it will become a very popular show on the network.”

STEPHEN QUADROS psyched about the IFL
4-25-2006
Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, Colorado

"Everybody even remotely interested in MMA knows who Bas (Rutten), Renzo (Gracie), Pat (Miletich) and Mo (Maurice Smith) are," begins Stephen Quadros, the man known internationally in the MMA biz as "The Fight Professor", and the lead commentator for the new International Fight League. "But the real surprises about the debut of the IFL will be the members of these four teams. I’m not going to mention specific names…yet, but trust me; there will be a number of new stars emerging out of the night’s festivities. Every team has champions in the making.”

“Additionally, the ‘Legends Championship 2006’ series will be a benchmark as far as how people view the sport of MMA. I have long advocated a league environment and a return to the tournament format. The IFL has both! So essentially the April 29th IFL show at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey is the semi-finals for the Legends Championship. The finals will occur on June 3rd between the two teams who prevail this Saturday. Structure is not such a bad word after all. (Laughs)”

Quadros will be calling the action at ringside (yes, the IFL is not in a cage) with one of the most celebrated and charismatic fighters in the game, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. “Quinton is a hoot, a real character! But more importantly, he brings an in ring perspective that few people have. He’s been in there with some of the greatest and racked up some huge wins. I really look forward to working with him,” says Stephen.

The third member of the broadcast team is Shannon Knapp, who will be handling the bulk of interviews and live reports. The Fight Professor adds, “Shannon is such a pleasure to work with. She is extremely knowledgeable about MMA, down to Earth and has a passion that is unmatched. We’re all going to have a blast!”

The IFL’s “Legends Championship 2006” will air exclusively on FOX SPORTS NET (FSN) in two parts: May 21st and May 28th.
