K1 MMA TRYOUTS
4-14-2006

Las Vegas, Nevada

K-1, the world’s premiere martial arts fight promotion, will offer a one-day open tryout at Las Vegas, Nevada’s Mirage Hotel and Casino on Friday, April 28th, one day prior to its “Mayhem At Mirage II” star-studded fight card.

The trial will be open to those who wish to compete in K-1’s mixed martial arts contingent as well as to those who meet the requirements of the organization’s two stand-up fighting weight divisions – the 154-pound limit “Max” class and the 200 pounds and above, super heavyweight group.

Participants will partake in various exercises that test a wide array of skills including speed, power, coordination, flexibility, and knowledge of the sport. They will also engage in sparring sessions with one another.

The tryout session marks the third consecutive year that K-1 has offered such an opportunity to fighters who desire to join its roster. Last August, K-1 played host to over 200 contestants who hailed from various regions of The United States and whose combat sports training background included experience in a wide range of disciplines ranging from kickboxing to western boxing to wrestling.

Finalists from the two previous tryouts have since been enlisted to compete in K-1 events held in Las Vegas, Hawaii, and Japan. Last August, 2004 K-1 heavyweight tryout finalist Patrick Barry made his debut during a “Mayhem At Mirage” tournament reserve fight and scored a first round technical knockout on Mark Selbee. Utah’s Dan Green, a finalist in last August’s auditions, will make his K-1 debut in a tournament reserve bout during the April 29th “Mayhem At Mirage II” event.

K-1 USA Fight Coordinator Sven Bean will oversee and direct all activities during the trial. A group of judges as well as executives from K-1 Japan and K-1 USA will observe the action and make recruiting decisions. Past judges have included legendary K-1 competitor Sam Greco as well as three-time K-1 tournament champion, Michael McDonald, and 2005’s K-1 “World Grand Prix in Hawaii” tournament winner, “Big Daddy” Gary Goodridge.

Those who wish to register for the tryout should contact Mr. Bean via email at beanz4@msn.com or should fax a request for an official tryout application to 303-400-1756. Candidates will be required to make their own arrangements for travel and stay in Las Vegas during the tryout period.

Leading martial arts equipment supplier, Fairtex, will provide all gear necessary to conduct the tryout sessions.

K-1 is a martial arts fighting sport that derives its name from its inclusion of a wide array of combat disciplines, including Karate, Kung-Fu, and Kickboxing (“K”), and its intent to determine one champion in one ring (“1”). After being staged for the first time in Japan in 1993 under the direction of founder Master Kazuyoshi Ishii, it later evolved into the country’s most popular sport and achieved popular culture status there as its athletes turned into larger-than-life celebrities.

FOX SPORTS NETWORK PRESENTS AN UNPRECEDENTED MIXED MARTIAL ARTS TELECAST
SUNDAY, APRIL 9, 2006
9:00 PM local

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, CO

THREE EXCLUSIVE FIGHTS SHOWCASED ON “FSN PRIDE FIGHTING SPECIAL”
Plus, Revisit Legendary Battle Between Rickson Gracie And Nobuhiko Takada

The Pride Fighting Championships is widely considered the best Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting organization in the world. Now, for the first time in television history, the Pride Fighting Championships produce three bouts for the U.S. television market to air exclusively on FSN. Such noted fighters as Phil Baroni, Yuki Kondo, Denis Kang and Mark Weir step into the ring for fights that can only be seen as part of FSN PRIDE FIGHTING SPECIAL on Sun., April 9 at 9:00 PM local.

The three fights were on the card of the Pay-Per-View Bushido 10 special from Tokyo, Japan, but aren’t available to PPV customers. FSN is the only place to see these fights. Every thunderous blow, every bone-crushing kick captivates fans and reinforces why many in the fight game believe that MMA will be the main fighting style for the next generation, turning boxing into a novelty. The skill sets MMA fighters have – expertise in a combination of martial arts, kickboxing, judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, boxing and more -- are astounding.

“PRIDE has made sure that the toughest warriors in the MMA fight genre step forward for this FSN exclusive,” said FSN Executive Vice President of Programming and Production George Greenberg. “These are world-class fights and FSN is thrilled to be the sole cable network showcasing the top Mixed Martial Arts organization in the world.”

Jay Glazer hosts the evening and announces the fights with analyst and MMA star Frank Trigg. The main event pits “New York Badass” Phil Baroni against Yuki Kondo. Baroni is best known for turning his opponents’ faces into pulp with brutal force stemming from his kickboxing, wrestling and boxing background. Kondo is a more tactical fighter, an expert in Shaolin Boxing with quick-strike abilities. Their contrasting styles ensure a classic battle.
“It’s an honor to fight on FSN,” said Baroni. “It’s the first time for something like this and I guarantee the fans are in for a treat.”

In the second exclusive fight, Canadian Denis Kang tries to force Englishman Mark Weir into submission. Kang, one of the more clever fighters in the Pride Fighting Championships, is trained in wrestling and jiu-jitsu and has blended elements together from a variety of Korean-based martial arts. His well-rounded experience often throws his opponents off-balance, which he’ll need to defeat Weir. The Canadian attacks with lightning-fast kickboxing moves, stunning his challenger before he can retaliate. Additionally on the special undercard, American Yves Edwards takes on local fan favorite Seiichi Ikemoto of Japan.

And with a very special bonus, FSN caps the evening off with a look back at one of Pride’s all-time legendary matches -- the memorable 1997 bout pitting Rickson Gracie, the most prolific member of the famed Brazilian fighting Gracie family against Nobuhiko Takada, a Japanese wrestling sensation. That bout took place at the first ever Pride Fighting Championships event. Going into the fight, Gracie boasted over 400 victories with zero losses despite competing in an era with no weight classes.

IFL - Fox Sports

FOX SPORTS NET TO BROADCAST THE INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE'S HIGHLY ANTICIPATED DEBUT

3-29-2006

Los Angeles, California

Three Original Taped Telecasts Will Air Nationally in May and June, Highlighting New League's Innovative Team-Based Concept

Underscoring the fast-growing popularity of mixed martial arts, Fox Sports Net (FSN), a division of the FOX Broadcasting Company and News Corp, today announced an agreement with the International Fight League (IFL) to nationally televise the IFL's debut event across a series of at least three original taped telecasts that will air in May and June this year. The action-packed shows will be cut from footage gathered during the IFL's live world premiere event taking place on Saturday, April 29 in Atlantic City at Trump Taj Mahal.

Recently-formed, the IFL mixes the intense action of mixed martial arts (MMA) with the established team-and season-based approach found in America's most loved sports. MMA legends Bas Rutten, Pat Miletich, Renzo Gracie and Maurice Smith will coach and lead four teams – Anacondas, Silverbacks, Pitbulls and Tigersharks – comprised of five fighters each in the lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. The events will be held in a ring (not in a cage), believed to be the most conducive environment for fighters, fans and production.

Two teams will be seen battling on FSN's first telecast on Sunday, May 21 at 6pm locally, followed by the other two teams on Sunday, May 28 at 6pm locally. The two winning teams will then be seen squaring off for the IFL Legends Championship broadcast in early June. The televised shows will be produced by Emmy award-winning producer Peter Lasser, who has worked on several Olympic telecasts as well as with ESPN, NBC Sports, NFL Films and FSN, among others.

The new league was formed by Gareb Shamus, founder and chairman of the comics empire Wizard Entertainment Group, and Kurt Otto, a highly successful New Jersey real estate investor and a life-long martial arts participant.

"When it comes to delivering action, FSN is known for being the most innovative network out there," said IFL co-founder Shamus. "We couldn't have found a better place to televise our debut, and we're committed to giving fans a great, action-packed event, which we know will turn into three killer shows," he added.

IFL Commissioner Otto added, "This sport is getting bigger and bigger every day, and we believe the IFL is ushering in an exciting new era in mixed martial arts. From top to bottom, we have created a league and an event that will bring MMA to a larger audience. The fact that FSN believes in the IFL concept so much that they're televising our first event is incredible. We know the audience is ready, and so are we."

The fight card for the IFL's live world premiere currently is as follows:

RING OF FIRE 22

3-26-2006

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, CO

By Ian Cropp

VAIL - Allan Ryan may have lost his first fight by a close decision, but he's ready for his next one.

"I've found my new sport for sure," Ryan said, holding an ice pack to his swollen right eye. "I'll let this eye heal, but I'll be back."

And even though Nick Mullins beat Brian Box by rendering him unconscious, the two embraced in the locker room, discussed their fight and shared a few laughs.

Such was the atmosphere at Saturday night's Ring of Fire mixed martial arts championship at Dobson Arena. In front of a packed house, 20 fighters showcased their skills and gave Vail its first taste of ultimate fighting.

Jerry Campbell started the 10-card event by earning a win over Haven Torres less than one minute into the second round of the 135-pound bout. After Campbell brought Torres to the ground, Campbell worked into a position for a choke and earned a victory when his opponent tapped out. "I had to watch. He was trying to throw that knee," Campbell said. "I kept my eye on that and tried to get him to the ground. I figured that was where I'd get him."

The second fight lasted less than a minute with Louie Lagunsad barraging Jaske Reese (155 pounds) with punches and getting Reese in an armlock before the referee called the fight when Reese tapped out.

In the third bout, Ryan and Steve Garcia (155 pounds) went the distance in a back-and-forth fight. Midway into the first round, Garcia took Ryan to the ground and delivered several blows to Ryan's face, cutting his eye. But Ryan fought to avoid too many direct blows, and finished out the round. Ryan came back in the second round with some offense, and in the third round, Ryan gained positioning and put Garcia in a leg lock for the final minute of the fight. When the bell rang, both fighters collapsed with exhaustion, and the judges gave Garcia the decision. "I almost finished him with that triangle," Ryan said. "I tried that toe lock. He's a tough opponent, though."

One wild round

Mullins and Box (155 pounds) wasted no time in their bout, attacking each other right away. After Mullins took Box down, Box used a hard kick from the ground to push Mullins back, and the two then engaged in a neutral position. In the final minute of the round, Mullins earned a headlock on Box, while Box worked Mullins' left ankle. The 10-second warning block sounded off, and it looked like the round would end, but Box passed out with two seconds left in the round, giving Mullins the win. "He messed up," Mullins said. "He was going for my feet, and he should have been trying to control my wrists. I knew once he was going for my feet, I had to choke. I didn't squeeze right away because this altitude (messed) me up. I waited patiently, and then got it. After a few seconds, I knew he wasn't going to tap. I knew he was tough." Box was equally amazed that Mullins didn't tap out. "He's got Gumby ankles," Box said. "That thing was torqued, I know that. I was trying to wrench his ankle, and all of a sudden, I passed out. I'm squeezing and being stupid, thinking, 'Oh, I've got his ankle.' And then I'm out."

In the women's kickboxing match (115 pounds), Kate Martinez earned a unanimous decision over Michelle Fierros. Martinez used her height advantage to get lots of solid head shots on Fierros, as well as several good kicks. In the second round, Martinez unleashed several quick shots that bloodied Fierros' nose, and Martinez continued to dominate in the final round. "My coaches train me well to work with my height and weight," Martinez said. "Usually in my weight class I have a distinct reach advantage. My punches often hit my opponents before my kicks can." Fierros didn't land many head shots, and focused on pounding away at Martinez's body. "She was going after my body. That was her plan, which confused me because if it were anyone's plan it should have been mine to help gas her out faster. Maybe she's thinking because she's from Texas and I'm from Colorado evening out the field a little bit. But I've trained so much in my abs and in the martial arts with core conditioning that body shots don't really effect me. The head shots, though, if she kept those up, it would have been more devastating."

And Drew "Vanilla Gorilla" Knapp earned a tap out against Scott Swanson in the first round of the heavyweight bout.

Ultimate respect

All of the fighters showed the ultimate respect for their opponents, as well as the sport. "There's definitely some of the biggest camaraderie you'll ever see," Torres said. "It's hard to go out there and make yourself hit somebody who didn't do anything to you. Not only that, but we are sportsmen and we don't want to hurt each other. We want to represent the sport. Right now, it's on the cusp and some people think, 'Oh they are thugs or bar brawlers,' which is totally the opposite of the truth. A lot of us are accomplished martial artists and have discipline and nothing but love for the art." When Box opened the door to Mullins' locker room with a smile on his face and came to congratulate Mullins, there was no question as to sportsmanship.

"Once the bell rings, it's on, but after that, we're people," Mullins said.

RATNER JOINS UFC

3-24-2006

Las Vegas, NV

The Ultimate Fighting Championship today announced that Marc Ratner, who has served with the Nevada State Athletic Commission since 1984, and as its Executive Director for the last 13 years, has decided to leave state service and join Zuffa, LLC as a member of the Ultimate Fighting Championship organization.

"Everyone here at Zuffa has always had the utmost respect for Marc Ratner and the work he has done for the Nevada State Athletic Commission", said Dana White, UFC President. "We are thrilled that, at this point in his career, Marc has decided to join the Ultimate Fighting Championship team. I truly look forward to working with Marc and know that his experience in combat sports will be invaluable to the UFC organization. "It has been my honor to serve the State of Nevada for over 2 decades, first as inspector, then as chief inspector, and for the last 13 years as Executive Director. During that time, I have had the privilege of working with some of the finest athletic commissioners and officials in the world,” said Ratner. "It was time in my career, however, that I owed it to myself and my family to think about opportunities in the private sector. And like so many others, I have been amazed at what Dana White and Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta III have done with the UFC brand of mixed martial arts. As a result, I am very excited to be joining Zuffa, and I hope that my efforts will be a benefit to the UFC organization and to the future growth of the sport of mixed martial arts.”

IFL - International Fight League
3-8-2006
New York, NY

Mixing the rising popularity of mixed martial arts (MMA) with the established team- and season-based approach found in America's most loved sports, today it was announced that the International Fight League (IFL) has been formed. The IFL will feature some of the MMA world's most-recognized and revered names as its coaches and fighters, each competing in live events throughout the year. The new league has been created by Gareb Shamus, founder and chairman of the comics empire Wizard Entertainment Group, and Kurt Otto, a highly successful New Jersey real estate investor and a life-long martial arts participant.

"The IFL's goal, shared by the coaches and fighters, is two-fold: first, to elevate the sport to the elite level it deserves and treat mixed martial arts fighters like professional athletes, and second, to use the team and season-based approach that works so well in the NFL, NBA and MLB. This hasn't been done before in MMA. Fighters have been treated much like they are in the boxing world -- scrounging from fight to fight and promotion to promotion. We are giving the MMA athlete a level of respect they have earned and, frankly, they deserve."

The IFL will target the 18-49 male fan base that has increasingly followed MMA, one of the fastest growing participation sports in the world. Among the unique aspects of the IFL are:

* The events will be held in a ring (not in a cage), believed to be the most conducive environment for fighters, fans and production.

* As part of the new league's innovative premise, each of the original teams will have a set annual operating budget, which will include expense guidelines.

* Day-to-day operations will be determined by the IFL's coaches, who will serve as managers who hand-pick and assemble their teams.

* They, along with their athletes, will be guaranteed a base income and health benefits no matter how many times they compete during their contracted periods, along with a bonus system that will offer individual and team incentives for performance.

The first event will be taking place in a major live venue in mid-2006. Teams will represent numerous regions of the world, as well as the various disciplines currently highlighted in the sport. There will be teams of five -- consisting of lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight. The IFL will launch with four teams in a single elimination tournament. At the first event all four teams will compete, one team will vie against another, with ten fights taking place. The two winning teams will meet approximately six weeks later to see who the Championship team will be.

"We are convinced there is a great opportunity before us to push the world of Mixed Martial Arts to an entirely new level," said Otto. "The legendary team managers have built long and respected careers. Investing their experience, wisdom and personal resources toward the goals of building this league, recruiting other leaders and developing their own fighters can ultimately provide the kind of long-term rewards never available before." Shamus also added that "Such a league of champions will be able to bring the awareness of this sport to a new level, while also creating the combined power necessary to negotiate best of breed promotional and media alliances."

ABOUT THE IFL:
Founded in 2005, the International Fight League was created to establish a centralized and structured organization that brings the power and influence of the mixed martial arts industry together.

Editors note: Stay tuned for some surprise announcements about additional IFL teams and coaches in the near future.

RING OF FIRE 22 and 23 Tickets on sale!!

3-2-2006

Denver, Colorado

Promoter Sven BOOGIE Bean is happy to announce that the tickets for the next two ROF shows are now on sale. The regions top promotion will present back to back events starting with ROF 22: VENDETTA!!

The VENDETTA event will take place Saturday, March 25th, 2006 at the Dobson Arena in downtown Vail, Colorado. The nations top ski resort town will be in full swing as thousands of tourists will be there for Spring Break. ROF 22 will feature 12 MMA and K-1 rules bouts featuring some of the best up and coming talent in the area. Colorado's best MMA schools will be represented. A top team of fighters from Las Vegas will compete, as well as athletes from Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The Vail Valley will be treated to a great night of MMA action in the town's top venue. The Dobson Arena, a 35,000 square foot multi-purpose facility, is the largest of its type on the Western Slope of Colorado. Dobson Arena is the site for the Vail Figure Skating Festival and the Vail Invitational Skating Championships. The venue has been used by top national music acts as well. The Vendetta event will mark the first time MMA has been promoted in this venue.

Then the very next weekend ROF returns with ROF 23: IMPACT!!

The IMPACT event will take place Saturday, April 1st, 2006 at the Douglas County Event Center in Castle Rock, Colorado. The Denver area has been inundated lately with fight show after fight show, sometimes blurring the lines between spectacle and sport. Area fight fans can rely on the fact that RING OF FIRE has been and always will be the "sure thing" when looking for a quality Mixed Martial Arts event. ROF 23: IMPACT!! will follow those standards, with the right mix of solid match making, tasteful production values, and a fan friendly venue. The show will be debuting some new faces to the ROF crowd, and some of the promotion's most exciting names will appear including: Tyler Toner, Rocky Johnson, Mike NO EXCUSES Baldwin, Hiro Kamikozono, and Luke LIL HULK Caudillo. Keeping with the promotion's commitment to create champions at all weights, a 130 lb Champion will be crowned that night. The Acrobatic John Dobson of New Mexico will vie for the title against an unnamed opponent. But the fight that has everyone talking will be 155 Champion Alvin KID Robinson's first title defense against KING James Martinez. Martinez earned his title shot at ROF 21 last month by beating Takahiro Kamikozono in a qualifying match. The KING immediately called out the KID. There was a bit of fireworks in the ring, and was obvious to everyone in attendance that there is truly no love lost between these two. So far Robinson has efficiently dispatched all comers, but has yet to face an elite striker like Martinez. Martinez has shown he has solid enough ground game to be able to bring fights repeatedly back to standing. The crowd will be in for a great display of MMA athleticism in this match.
