NATHAN MARQUARDT - Banned substance test results negative!!!

8-18-2005

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, CO

Since receiving news late last week that his post-Ultimate Fight Night urinalysis had tested positive for a banned substance, UFC fighter Nathan Marquardt has voluntarily submitted himself to two additional tests, one conducted in Colorado this past weekend, and a second in Nevada on Monday. Today, the Colorado tests results came in and indicated NEGATIVE for any banned substance. The Nevada results should become available tomorrow or early next week.

WHAT ABOUT NATHAN MARQUARDT?

8-17-2005

Denver, Colorado

By Steve Alley

Per our conversation with Marquardt's manager Will Hendricks, Nathan Marquardt went back to Las Vegas, Nevada where he was tested again which he did voluntarily in an attempt to clear his name. This happened at the beginning of the week. The N.S.A.C. did speak with Ryan Bennett at MMA Weekly to indicate changes could be moving forward to change how bouts are handled where one of the fighters test "positive" for a banned or illegal substance as determined by their commission. Things to consider in the specific case of Nathan Marquardt;

He re-tested voluntarily in Nevada and Colorado and has the support of Dana White and the UFC.

Marquardt categorically denies having used steroids. If he were guilty why go and do the immediate re-test?

Approximately 90 days ago he tested in Nevada when working toward perhaps being on the 2nd season of "The Ultimate Fighter". Those test results were negative.

Contracts were signed for the main event fight 90 days out from his bout with Salaverry-therefore it makes no sense that he would jeopardize the opportunity to fight in the UFC and in front of millions (Television) in his home country.

He worked for over a decade to put himself in a position to fight in the biggest promotion in North America.

I did a little investigation of my own with many that figured to be experts on the use of what would be considered a "banned" substance or "steroids". Speaking specifically with weight lifters where we office inside World Gym the questions were asked regarding the name "Deca". It seemed that just about everyone asked knew or were familiar with the name. Nearly all agreed that it works and also stays in the system for a long period of time. Some said up to as much as 17 or 18 months. We posed the question asking if this substance could have been introduced into the system from the purchase of over the counter supplements. To a person the answer was "Yes". We figured why not ask experts on the matter of why a person would seek to gain strength and muscle mass at the same time............very common amongst competitive weight lifters. We then threw out the hypothetical "what if" in this case (Nathan Marquardt) without mentioning names or specifics. The overwhelming response was this;
Why would anyone try taking "Deca" knowing they would be tested in as little as 90 days knowing it stays in the system for a long time?
This point could be brought to the powers that be in the Nathan Marquardt case.

It is not out of the question that someone could test negative 90 days prior and then test positive 90 days later.
Just not likely when using "Deca" because it stays in the system and for the regular user it would have tripped a "positive" in the beginning.

What effect would taking "deca" have on the user?
Like any steroid or banned substance there could be mood swings, unusual aggression, quicker route to mass muscle, fatigue would set in after long periods of working out or competing. The examples listed in red print do not define Nathan Marquardt-particularly in his fight with Ivan Salaverry.

If the fighter knew that he would be fighting in the fight capitol of the world (Las Vegas, Nevada) why would anyone risk so much for so little? It makes no sense in this case.

Would it be possible to have a test come back as a false positive?
Absolutely. It happens all the time. And according to many of the weight lifters questioned it does happen all the time. That is why "blockers" were introduced.

It was reported on Wednesday August 17, 2005 that the results of the follow up tests could come out as early as Friday August 19, 2005 from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. If they are returned negative then one would assume that the tests administered at the conclusion of the fight between Nathan Marquardt and Ivan Salaverry would come into question as to the validity of the initial results. People do what they do for their reasons. Having followed the career of Nathan Marquardt for nearly a decade, watching the fighter try and make his way in the sport we hope for the most positive conclusion to this situation so the fans in America will know the Nathan Marquardt that they have seen in Japan. Certainly for him in this case but especially for the fans that have long supported mixed martial arts- and for those in the Zuffa organization.

MARQUARDT denies any use of banned substances

8-16-2005

Denver, Colorado

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Late last week, Nathan was notified that his post-Ultimate Fight Night urinalysis had tested positive for a banned substance. This unexpected news left us unbelieving, and in a state of shock. At this point, we can only assume this is a false-positive result, possibly due to some flaw in the testing process. For those reasons, Nathan has voluntarily submitted to two additional tests, one conducted in Colorado this past weekend, and a second in Nevada on Monday. We are confident the new tests will exonerate Nathan of these allegations.

Nathan would like his friends and fans to know that he has NEVER knowingly taken any banned substance. His personal code of ethics, and strong Christian faith would never allow him to do so. We are confident that an impartial review of the facts will reveal this truth.

We would also like to thank UFC president Dana White for his strong support in this unfortunate matter.

UFC NEWS - Mir responds to

8-14-2005

Las Vegas, Nevada

Frank Mir's management issued the following statement about being stripped of the UFC heavyweight title.

"I want to clear few things: Frank wanted to fight Arlovski, l am the one that did not let him fight, he wouldn't be ready in October, l wanted to get him in his best shape to take Arlovski, so after warning Frank about the risk of the UFC do what they did, l called Joe Silva and told him about my decision and asked him to postpone Frank's return to December.

Joe was not happy and said that would not be possible. I understand the UFC position but l also want them to understand that we are not happy with that. Medical clearance was never the issue, Frank is recovered, their decision is for some other reason. Frank will be ready in December and we hope the UFC will have someone to fight him at that time."

Las Vegas, NV (August 1, 2005) -- The Octagon unleashes a fury when the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization holds the first-ever "Ultimate Fight Night," a nationally-televised event on Spike TV featuring fighters from the hit reality series "The Ultimate Fighter." Stephan Bonnar, Sam Hoger, Alex Karalexis and Kenny Florian will be pitted against each other, and Chris Leben, Nate Quarry and Josh Koscheck will face-off with Patrick Cote, Pete Sell and Pete Spratt in a soon-to-be classic UFC event live on Spike TV from Las Vegas' Cox Pavilion Saturday, August 6, 2005. The live action starts at 7:15 p.m. EST/4:15 p.m. PST and Spike TV's telecast starts at 6:00 p.m. EST/PST

VINDICATION MATCH
Stephan Bonnar vs Sam Hoger (Light Heavyweights)
More than two and a half million viewers watched Stephan "American Psycho" Bonnar (9-2) fight like a warrior for three five-minute rounds before a close-call decision went to opponent Forrest Griffin. Working up the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills he learned from the legendary Carlson Gracie, Bonnar intends to vindicate himself by sending Sam "the Alaskan Assassin" Hoger (5-0) to the mat. Hoger, who trains with the renowned Pat Miletich team, is predicting a different outcome and intends to devastate Bonnar using his superior stand up martial arts skills.

WELTERWEIGHT WARRIOR MATCH
Alex Karalexis vs Kenny Florian (Welterweights)
Alex "The Assassin" Karalexis (5-0), set the precedent for his upcoming bout against Kenny "Ken-Flo" Florian (4-2) when he TKO'd Josh Rafferty in the first two minutes of the first round of the undercard of The Ultimate Fighter finale. A dangerous striker with knockout power, Karalexis will definitely need his stand-up martial arts skills against the polished ground-fighter and jiu-jitsu black belt Florian.

Patrick Cote vs Chris Leben (Middleweights)
Despite his controversial antics during the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Chris "The Crippler" Leben (11-1) has proved himself a force to be reckoned with inside the Octagon. Holding a strong professional record, Leben will need all of his experience to challenge Canadian MMA champion Patrick "The Predator" Cote (6-2-0). Cote, a knockout artist, is hungry to make a name for himself in the UFC organization and plans to do so at Leben's expense.

Pete Spratt vs Josh Koscheck (Welterweights)
Already considered a top-flight wrestler, Josh Koscheck (5-0) possesses raw athletic talent and precision timing on the mat. Praised by the coaches of The Ultimate Fighter for his skills, Koscheck will find a foe of epic proportions with Pete "The Secret Weapon" Spratt (14-7-0). Described as a Dangerous striker with a Muay Thai base, Spratt renders instant knockouts with punches, kicks, knees or elbows. Spratt, who stopped "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler at UFC 42, plans to take Koscheck to school and teach him a few hard-knock lessons inside the Octagon.

Gideon Ray vs Mike Swick (Middleweights)
Scoring an intense 20-second knockout on The Ultimate Fighter finale, Mike "Quick" Swick (7-1) made good on his fight moniker and is plotting a similar attack when he meets Gideon "The Gladiator" Ray (15-2-1). Currently training under UFC veteran Keith "The Giant Killer" Hackney, Gideon intends to unload his famous striking techniques and render Swick a quick KO. With rival stand-up skills, both fighters are expected to strike at will and finish the bout by knockout.

Josh Neer vs Drew Fickett (Welterweights)
Determined to make his first-ever UFC fight a success, Josh "The Dentist" Neer (13-1-1) will enter the Octagon as an aggressive fighter who can swiftly handle an opponent by submission or knockout. Using a combination of wrestling and Muay Thai disciplines, Neer will take on Drew "The Master" Fickett (26-3-0), who considers himself one of the most well-rounded fighters in the world. Coming off months of intense conditioning and complex training, Fickett wants to defeat Neer and show the world he has the makings of a UFC champion.

Nate Quarry vs Pete Sell (Middleweights)
Nathan "Rock" Quarry (13-1) is on the fast track to UFC fame with his TKO of Lodune Sincaid at the Ultimate Fighter finale and recent TKO of veteran fighter Shonie Carter at UFC 53. Quarry has earned the reputation as a striker with a versatile set of submission skills. Pete "Drago" Sell, (6-0-0) a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt trained by UFC veteran Matt "The Terror" Serra, was the first man to ever submit the very tough "New York Bad Ass" Phil Baroni. Sell is ready to show that he can take on Quarry and become the best middleweight in the division.

MAIN EVENT:
Nate Marquardt vs Ivan Salaverry (Middleweights)
The only man to be crowned a seven time-champion of one of Japan's oldest fighting organizations, Nate "The Great" Marquardt (24-6-1) will find himself against Ivan Salaverry (11-3-1) inside the Octagon August 6. Marquardt, who prides himself on his versatility and lion-hearted fighting style, will utilize the full potential of his world class striking and take-down skills to handle his opponent. Salaverry, coming off wins against Andrei Semenov, Tony Fryklund and Joe Riggs, is considered one of the most talented middleweights in the world. He has plans to become a challenger for the UFC middleweight title, and has no intention to let Marquardt derail that goal.

UNION TEAM victorious at AFRICA U.F.A.
July 12, 2005.

Carnival City Arena

Johannesburg, South Africa

I'm back home after two weeks of MMA events in South Africa and Brazil (Rio de Janeiro). I went to South Africa with three of my MMA fighters, plus one from the Nova Uniao Team, of Rio de Janeiro. Two of my fighters won ( an intercontinental title and a World Middle weight UFA title), one by submission and the other by KO, both at the first round. The event was a great success and it seems that the promoters are very interested to improve the level of the fights, due to the financial support of the investors.

UNION TEAM COACH - Ricardo Murgel

UFA Africa Middle Weight World Championship bout
Itamar Rosa (Union Team) vs. Xavier Foupa-Pokam
Itamar - winner by KO, round 1

UFA Africa Intercontinental Light Heavy Weight Championship bout
Valdir Linhares (Union Team) vs. Wiehahn Lesch
Valdir wins by submission, round 1

UFA Africa Intercontinental Light Weight Champion bout
Giovani Diniz (TEAM NOBRE ARTE e NOVA UNIÃO) x Olivier Elizabeth
Giovani wins by decision

Master Murgel will be visiting the United States in late August to conduct his annual series of MMA and BJJ seminars. Interested parties should contact  sportmasters@msn.com for details.

Official Press Release from Jeff Weller "The Voice of the Cage"
7-8-2005

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, CO

Hello great fans of the greatest full contact sport in the world MMA. Recently I worked a show @ the Blaisdale Arena on 7/2/05 in Honolulu Hawaii for Promoters Chad & Mike from Platinum Activities LLC.

The show was Extreme Wars X-1 and it was the promoters first time promoting MMA. Anyone who has been around MMA for any length of time know that making a professional MMA show happen and turn a financial and artistic profit is very difficult. I have been in MMA since UFC #7 in Buffalo, NY I managed Dutch Ju Jitsu fighter
Remco Pardoel and I have called shows from NY to Ca and most states in between in the last ten years.

So lets not waste any more time and get right to the point!!! The show had some really good professional fighters on the card,  Chris "The Boston Strangler" Brennen's New Generation fight team fought with honor and skill against the home field advantaged Hawaii Top Team. All the match's between these teams were hard fought and honest MMA,
the fans in attendance agreed. Team leader Brennan submitted his opponent @ 1:14 of the 1st round with a very professional submission employed by the crafty MMA veteran.

Jeff "The Snowman" Monson vs. Rich Wilson was also a good match up if there is  such a thing when you fight the always Brutal Monson! Rich Wilson stepped up and tried against one of the greatest heavyweight submission Grapplers on the F$$kin Planet!

Rich Wilson is a very cool guy and a professional, Monson is also a very cool guy and a complete professional, I am glad I got to work with these great heavyweights at Extreme Wars X-1.

Ricco Rodriguez was ready to fight, and he was a complete professional.  Ricco worked with the shows promoters helping to sell the show and was a complete pro. Warpath is a very cool guy as a person but, he is not in the same league as the ex UFC Heavyweight champion Mr. Rodriguez and it showed @ 2:38 of the 1st round.

But as we all know in show business you always have some assholes who think they are bigger than the game itself. In this case the Fighters who think they are smarter than the rest of us and who think they can run a WORK on the whole MMA world and the fans who paid there hard earned money to come to Extreme Wars X-1.

The Fighters are UFC hall of famer Dan "The Beast" Severn and his trusted Work partner Shannon "The Cannon" Ritch from here on known simply as "Monkey Boy" Or should I call him Shannon Roach because of his moral high road on Medical Marijuana? Whatever life is to short to bother with Knuckleheads like Monkey Boy honored member of the North American Work Squad (N.A.W.S.) for short.  I dismiss you Monkey Boy go eat a banana and color your hair, beard and goatee.

Dan "The Beast" Severn is a completely different story, I respect Dan for what he has done in his distinguished MMA career but......... The last few years have been nothing but a series of Lets make it look good Works where Dan throws his opponent around, classic WWE ring/cage banter then Dan at the knick of time pulls out the ever evasive key lock and boom! The Beast is magically restored to the MMA hall of fame for all the MMA fans to gawk and stare at with immense MMA admiration!

Well all things eventually come to an end and when the great MMA realists of the world see the Severn vs Monkey Boy Work Spectacular @ Extreme Wars X-1 the facts will speak for themselves, weather you think I am ugly or a sic freak which we all know I am!

The Promoters from Extreme Wars X-1 gave Dan Severn and Shannon Roach every chance to  come clean and admit their lack of judgment and the Work they attempted to pass off as a real MMA contest billed as a SUPERFIGHT.

Severn and Roach are steadfast in their claims much like a pair of thieves who got caught red handed, this time by a very skilled team of cameramen capturing Extreme Wars X-1 and a Sick, pot head, gothic, ring announcer who cares about MMA and it's future as a legitimate sport for now and the future.

Extreme Wars X-1 will be broadcasting the Severn vs. Roach master work on MMAweekly.com.
The leading MMA news sight anywhere in the world. Details to follow very soon.

Well, that is what I have to say take it or leave it, the tape will clarify everything once and for all.

Big Respect to the MMA fans of the world!

Weller / Voice of the Cage.

DUANE LUDWIG - News

7-7-2005

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, CO

UFC, K-1 MAX and ROF veteran Duane "BANG" Ludwig has just been signed to fight Thai Boxing legend Ramon "DIAMOND" Dekker. They will meet in a super fight on the K-1 World Max card in Tokyo, Japan, July 20th. Dutch Born Ramon Dekker (200 Fights 175wins 90 ko's) is probably one of the best known European Thai boxers of all time. He has fought against some of the top Thai boxers of his time. The DIAMOND is a skilled fighter with powerful punches and kicks, and a tendency to go head -to-head with his opponents. Ludwig is excited about the match up. He plans to travel to Thailand later this week to continue his training camp. While Ludwig has fought some of the best fighters in the world such as Masato, Malapaiet, Kozo Takeda, etc. fighting Dekkers will truly be fighting a living legend. He noted "I want to leave a mark as one of the best fighters, and to be a legend in this sport you have to beat a legend."

Barring any serious injury in the July 20th appearance, Ludwig will then fight 3 weeks later in Las Vegas for K-1 USA on PPV. It is likely that his opponent for that fight will be French fighter Remy Bonnel

MARQUARDT to UFC

The King comes home

6-5-2005

Broomfield, Colorado

kop3-08-03-7.jpg (74202 bytes)

Pancrase champ Nate "The Great" Marquardt has just signed a multi-fight agreement with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As might be expected, the 7-times King of Pancrase is very happy to be fighting on his home turf for the first time in many years. Marquardt has long hoped to show American fans what has made him a superstar in Japan.

At just 26 years old, Marquardt has been training and fighting in Japan since 1999. During that period, Marquardt has been consistently ranked among the top-ten middleweight fighters in the world. Following in the footsteps of former Pancrase greats Bas Rutten and Ken Shamrock, he eventually went on to surpass their formidable accomplishments by doing the impossible, winning the King of Pancrase title seven times. Even more impressive, all of Marquardt's Pancrase fights were under the closed fist, UFC-like rules, adopted by Pancrase in 1999.

Marquardt's UFC debut takes place on "Ultimate Fight Night", a Spike TV network special program, shown live on August 6, 2005, from Las Vegas, Nevada.  The fight will be a main event, middleweight bout against AMC Pankration fighter Ivan Salaverry (11-3).

RING OF FIRE #17: UNSTOPPABLE!
Saturday, June 18th, 2005
Douglas County Event Center, Castle Rock, CO
Doors @ 6:30, first bout 7:30 pm
GA $25.00, Reserved $40.00

Promoter Sven BOOGIE Bean is happy to announce that tickets are on sale for RING OF FIRE #17: UNSTOPPABLE! The event will take place on Saturday, June 18th at the DC Event Center in Castle Rock, CO. The format will include both MMA and K-1 Rules matches. The main event will feature the Mile High return of BJJ sensation Jay Jack. The Portland, ME based fighter is known for his tremendous BJJ ability. He is a veteran of the top national promotions, and is a crowd favorite when he comes home to Colorado. Jack has amassed a 12 - 3 record in MMA, with over a 90% finishing average. At the UNSTOPPABLE event Jack will be facing Arizona fighter, Drew Fickett. Fickett has a 24 - 3 record and has competed across the country racking up wins against some of the top names in the sport. Dennis Hallman, Carlo Prater, and Ultimate Fighter finalist Kenny Florian have all fallen victim to Fickett's skills. Fickett's biggest exposure in the industry has been his appearance against Nick Diaz at UFC 51. Both fighters are coming off tough losses and both have rededicated themselves to training for this match. The nature of our sport dictates that someone has to win, and someone will inevitable lose. Both fighters are incredible determined to get that "W". When you add in the skill level that they each bring to the table, then you have a recipe for fireworks in the ring.

Tickets are on sale now at all King Soopers stores, online at www.ticketswest.com, and by phone at 1-866-464-2626.
As always if you want to see the show in style, VIP tables are available by calling 303-246-5237.
